Deady, I'm begging you. Stop using things from 20 years ago to equate to today. Tortorella "developing" MSL is the same thing as you telling me Brady and Brees being drafted after the first round mean you can still do that today and plan to succeed. I was in undergrad when these things happened. I am so old I would be behind bulletproof glass in a liquor store.
Point is the pattern repeated itself at three different stops.
Torts takes over a young team, gets unheralded prospects to raise their game (and pisses off a high pick or two).
Whereas Trotz, like Lavi, became a "veterans' HC, the one you bring to turn around an underachieving franchise.

Torts seems to be the guy you bring in to turn around a young, struggling team.
Probably b/c his style wouldn't work well on a team like say Vegas.

Ironically, I don't think the PTB thinks that way, they don't see this as a young team that needs developing, but as an underachieving playoff caliber team - so they may have hired the right HC for the wrong reasons.

What is the difference between Vegas and the Flyers other than hockey talent? They're not particularly old, nor are the Flyers particularly young.

The Tortorella Columbus arc is the perfect encapsulation of how writers traditionally voted for the Jack Adams. When he got great Goaltending, they were fine. Then that stopped and the wheels completely fell off.

When Vigneault had the players Tortorella "developed," it showed that he was an excellent coach because he could win with subpar stars. Now they're evidence of Tortorella's otherworldliness. I keep smelling for burnt toast, just in case.
You rarely turn later round picks into franchise players.
As good as Guentzel is, he isn't Crosby or Letang.

A Point, Kucherov or St Louis may put you over the top, but most players you develop outside the 1st round will fill out your roster, allow you to roll a solid 2nd pair or 2nd/3rd line - but you still need to find/develop a few elite players.

I don't know if Torts can put a team over the top, for one thing, he'll probably wear out his welcome before he hits critical mass.
But he can certainly build up a below average team to something worth watching.

You definitely haven't watched Tortorella before

I thought the divas were shipped out last summer and the locker room was the best in the league?
Exactly! I mean they signed Keith Yandle, iron man and glue guy extraordinaire. And added to that the exquisite grit of Nate “crackhead” Thompson and the imposing greatness that is Risto Ristolainen.

The fact that they aren’t playing Colorado for the Cup is one of the great mysteries of my lifetime.

Most of the people who complain about Tortorella as a coach also said he’s terrible with young players, is hated by his players, & never lasts long anywhere.

All three of these things are wrong.

Why listen to people who have such an incorrect grasp of his coaching history?

59 was the worst, when I lived down there. Shootings every week from road rage at rush hour.
59 is dog shit still, but 45 is actually one of the worst roads in the entire United States (statically) so many accidents and deaths, it's insane, don't get me started on the shady police on my side of 45, these f***ers will park behind construction equipment with their cars all black out at night, and will cause accidents because they'll get you for 2 over the speed limit, one old white piece of poop, he's gotten me twice

Do the Powers That Be public state upon Torts hire that it is his way or the highway? Very curious to see...

What about the people who haven't focused on those things but instead focus on his far-outdated, obsolete view of hockey?

I mean that's par for the course around the league - Berube got a Cup off a good playoff run by Bennington. Pittsburgh won Cups when Fleury and/or Murray were hot, and exited quickly when they were cold.

I think Torts bigger problem is he gets a team to a certain level and just hasn't had a GM that can make the moves to take a team up a tier - certainly the CBJ GM didn't do a great job, blew a bunch of 1st rd picks, got stolen blind by Vegas in the ED, gave up a bunch of assets at the TDL for Dzingel and Duchene (Duclair, 1st, (2) 2nds) then let Panarin, Duchene and Dzingel walk in FA.

In NY, they made some good moves to reload, 3rd for Boyle, Gomez for McDonagh and Higgins, but (2) 2nds for Erixon, who was then flipped with a 1st, Anisimov and Dubinsky for Rick Nash was hemorrhaging value. When TDL trades for Clowe and Brassard didn't get them over the hump, they moved on from Trots. Picking up St Louis at the TDL the next year helped AV get to the SC Finals but cost them (2) 1st rd picks. The next TDL, they gave a 1st, 2nd & Duclair for Yandle but came up short in the CF.

In a sense he's too successful too fast - doesn't leave a team picking in the top ten for 2-3 years before he turns them around. So he needs his GM to make that great trade once he gets a team to a certain level.

2022-23:
Stone (30), Karlsson (30), Marchessault (32), Pacioretty (34), Janmark (30), Pietrangelo (33), McNabb (32), Martinez (35)
They have a lot of older veterans playing major roles.

What about those who claim he is the best development coach in hockey?

"But...but....players love Torts!"

Clown show.

Speaking of development, I wonder what we will get after the Wonderslobs meet with him and let him know their urgent priority is brutally squeezing all skill, creativity, initiative, and cuteness out of players to make them bastions of no-risk safety?

One worries.

2 weeks ago: Completely anti-dino

<1 week ago when it’s leaked that Torts is a favorite: Torts is the most progressive Dino. He might even be the best option!

Today: Torts is the best developmental coach in the league!!!
I didn't want Torts or any other Dino, but of all the Dinos, he's the best option for THIS team.
Because he won't bring in 3 or 4 scrub favorites, or try to recreate the Islander 4th line.

He's basically the best of the worst options.
His track record says he'll play the kids, after he's finished flaying them.
