I also don't think they understand exactly the kind of HC they're getting with Torts.
When Clarke hears Torts talking about playing "hard," he's thinking slobber knocker hits. Old fashioned Flyer hockey. Aggressive, dirty play, pushing the limits of the refs' patience.

What Torts seems to actually mean by playing hard is tenacious, non-stop pressure over 200 feet, aggressive forechecking by top 9 forwards and everyone back checks. But his teams don't take stupid penalties (good thing NAK is gone) or fight. And he has had no problem with players like Atkinson, who certainly isn't "physical." But he doesn't have much use for 4th line goons.

And I think Beef misunderstands as well, Torts is not about "safe" hockey, he's about disciplined hockey, he lets his defensemen free lance, but expects his forwards to read it and cycle back, he plays small skilled offensive players but expects them to skate hard on the back check (no cherry picking) and at least get their stick into passing lanes.

Panarin isn't exactly the poster child for big, physical, boring forwards, and he had no problem playing for Torts.

You're in for a surprise.

Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme.

Same shit happened with AV until he got canned and all the blame was put on him. It's the same thing that will happen when Fletcher is fired and the new guy comes in. It happened with Hak too.

It's lazy and played out at this point.

ITs going to be funny to see (well, i wont see, but you know what i mean)

"Fletchyer just got the guys AV wanted, he couldnt do anything!"

Fletcher gets fired

"Torts just has to work with the team he ineherited. Fletcher put them all there, its his fault the team stinks! We havent seen enough games of Torts yet to determine if hes a bad coach!"

I pity you people who cant put him on ignore.
I feel nothing for you people who can, but choose not to.

It seems like Tortorella is serving as an off-ramp from the Fletcher Hype Highway

Was brought up to him, not something he owns.
In other words, it may be what the PTB values, but that don't mean it's going to matter to Torts when he makes his roster decisions.
Because Tort's players don't fight, don't get goaded into fights, don't take dirty penalties to show they're tough.

Sorta of the antithesis to the PTB's definition of "hard to play against."

Most of the Torts "hype" has come from third parties, reporters and fans out of CBJ, his former players.

Which is why I've been saying from Day 1 that there is seemingly a disconnect between management vision and coach from the get -go. The kind of player management adored and brings in nonstop is not the kind of player Tortorella tends to enjoy.

At this point? Or was that point 5 years ago?

Well, then we agree.

Torts may accidentally be exactly what this franchise needs, someone who can bring accountability and discipline from a 21st century perspective, not the 1970s perspective.
And he may just bring that same accountability to the FO.

He will bring 2008 style accountability. Him admitting modern offense is beyond him is a massive red flag. And just letting guys do whatever isn't exactly the ideal option. Structure is required, and exists, and if he doesn't see that in transition and how the good teams run their cycles then he should be retiring.

He isn't going to bring accountability to his egomaniacal bosses. They don't answer to him and if he ever backtalked them he'd be fired instantly.

“21st century perspective.” What a bar to clear in 2022.

I’m actually enjoying this narrative that Tortorella is not only the best player developer in the league, but he’s also one of the most modern coaches in the game.

The dead puck era was in the 21st century.

He's so modern that when Columbus started trying for a skilled roster he told them he wasn't a fit and tried to leave, and up until very recently was publicly baffled by all this emphasis on scoring. In fact, I doubt he's had any huge epiphanies in the last week or two. The league is emerging from the grinding hit era and shedding the last vestiges of the DPE to enter a new offensive era and Tortorella is shaking his fist at it.

"Modern"
