Well, probably. Still, at a certain point, a team can't be reliant on the health of one player for their success. While we'd be closer to contention with Rinne healthy, and our backups haven't been stellar, the players need to find a way to get it done.

But we just don't compare to an LA or Chicago even if fully healthy.

Players as well as management.

How about we use our team when Vokoun went down, Mason came in and took the reigns. The other guys stepped up as well as the backup goalie. We weren't elite but we had some pretty good talent at the time.

I'm serious on this - I want team USA to fail miserably in the Olympics so everyone and their brother can see Poile's talent-collection issues.

And, hopefully, it would be the last straw that would actually make our ownership fire him.

Just seems awfully petty, even bordering on vindictive.

Poile's time with the Preds is already, by his own admission, in the closing pages. The only thing that will accelerate his departure will be his performance with the Predators as perceived by ownership. A flat Team USA performance will fall on him, but also with Burke, Lombardi, Shero, etc..., not to mention Bylsma and the players themselves (the composition of which are just fine aside from a couple you could make an argument for/against).

All that aside, a poor last couple of years and a poor Olympic showing isn't going to significantly change the reputation/perception he's built for his long career.

Shoot, I can't stand Suter or Kesler or Kane, but I'm not going to root against them representing our country, and I'm hardly the most ardent of patriots.

Always will cheer for team USA. Couldn't care who was on the team or running it.

That being said... Poile went a long way today for me correcting his two biggest mistakes of the offseason 1.Hendrick's deal. 2. Trusting in Hutton/Maz/Hels

Great deal. Still don't like Poile and Trotz decision making the past three years, but this reminds me Poile isn't nearly as poor as most think. It really is a win for this team, and is probably a win for EDM too as they need guys like Hendricks. The fact they took that contract though... wowza

To keep with the topic of the thread ;) ...

This just proves that Poile made big mistakes this off season and knows it. No Trotz "this is the best team in 10 years" quote can fix that.

I don't give damn that we almost came back tonight. We put ourselves in a hole in the first period. That is happening a lot. And I am seeing the same mistakes by our forwards over and over again. Missed assignments, leaving guys wide open for easy shots/goals. Do I blame the players? Yes in part. These guys get paid a lot of money and are making midget level mistakes. I blame Trotz. His style of play is not suited to the new NHL at all.i blame Poile for always taking the "safe" pick and not taking a chance on a Jordan Eberle. For being made a fool of by Suter. And finally I blame the ownership for being satisfied with mediocre.

If we keep on losing we would soon start hearing "Fire Trotz!" chants in the stands. Hopefully that would put the microscope on Poile as well and bring the attention of the owners.

I think attendance is going to have to take a hit before they will notice. However, the surveys they are sending out to STHs might get their attention. Several of us rated the team and management poorly on this last one.

I'm pretty sure paid attendance has already taken a hit.

Owner's know what's going on. There are very few franchises in the league that can loose for a few seasons without taking a hit on attendance. We are probably in the top 10 of franchises that CAN'T sustain long stretches of losing. We have also known no real success (deep playoff run), where as some of the other non-traditional markets (Dallas, TB, Carolina, etc) have.

We'll just find out what kind of decisions these owners make when the *** hits the fan.

I'm neutral on Trotz at this point. Real change won't happen unless the GM is changed-- at that will still take time to right this ship, assuming their hire is capable of that. Might as well change both I guess if they have a coach who they like.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Idk if that's sarcasm or not

Either way, Weber has absolutely put the team on his shoulders. He is carrying us

Weber is a superstar, yes. No one has ever, ever doubted that he is an elite player. The question was always if we were better off getting the return we'd get for him or keeping him.

You never get anything good enough in return in a trade with a superstar player. Just ask the Edmonton Oilers.

I can't speak for everyone who said this, but yes, I said we should explore options in trading Weber. I still think he would prefer to be in Philly (though his recent play is helping) and I think it is worthwhile to see if some team will stupidly overpay. That said, I'd want young top 3 F, young top 6 F/top prospect, replacement 2nd pairing D, and (preferably high) 1st. I don't think there's harm in seeing what offers are out there and only biting on an ovepayment.

Why do you think this? His uninspired play? Him not leading the league in every statistical defenseman category? The fact that he plays the 4th most minutes in the league against the best competition? The fact that he's not a rah rah sort of guy? If he wanted to be in Philly or not even be here, he'd go out there and mail it in every shift. For a guy that would rather be in Philly, they showed a stat on TV last night that said he's the only player in the NHL with over 100 shots, 100 hits and 100 blocked shots. You don't block shots if you're not invested in the team. You don't shoot the puck if you're not invested in the team. You don't hit other guys if you're not invested in the team. He got the best possible contract he could get before the lockout happened. It's a business. He's earning his money. He is thought of enough around the league that he was named an alternate captain for team Canada. If he was mailing it in people around the league would've noticed and he wouldn't have been given that honor.

I'd love to see him play in beast mode but for whatever reason, I know the coaches have told him he needs to keep his emotions in check so he's on the ice and not in the penalty box. That may make it look like he's aloof or not caring but he's playing within himself. There is no harm in that. I think there's another level the coaches aren't getting from him and that's when he's in beast mode. That's what made Pronger and Stevens so great and hard to play against. You didn't go to the corners or the front of the net or down the wing or cross the blue line with your head down when those guys were on the ice. I wish Trotz would let Weber go and play that way. It would be physically intimidating and would force the other team to rethink their strategy a little bit with Weber on the ice.

All that said, he's here, he hasn't said he doesn't want to be here, his play on the ice is still in the upper tier of players in this league. Until someone has a quote or actual reason as to why he'd rather be in Philly, I wish this line of thinking would stop. I have a feeling is what perpetuates rumors and the snowball happens. It's the very same thing about players and how we view them. Suter sucked for years even though he had gotten over the hump. Klein, the same thing. Ellis is still being sold short, no pun intended, as he's been playing his tail off and is looking really good out there. He and Jones on the point the PP have been better at moving the puck than Weber and Josi and that says something. The second PP unit actually moves the puck better and gets better chances IMO.

We tend to take what people say around here and run with it. It snowballs and the next thing you know, that player is a hack or washed up or some nonsense with no backing to it. Look at Smith. What type of player will he be? Is he reverting back to the first 20 games of his career or is he the player we've seen for the better part of two seasons? Spaling gets a lot of hate around here for whatever reason too yet he's playing with Legwand and Smith and doing just fine. He's playing ahead of Wilson on the 2nd PP unit as well which boggles my mind to be perfectly honest but if it's working, so be it, yet people were willing to give up on him after last season, even after he'd been a solid yet unspectacular player for us. Wilson looks like he can be a great playmaker but he really doesn't have a finisher to play with. Fisher's goal last night was sweet but he had time and speed getting to the puck so Lehtonen had no chance. The play Wilson made was that of sheer determination and a great pass to boot. Will Wilson get back to playing like he did before last years injury or is he going to be an enigma? We rate players when they're playing well or poorly but rarely do we look at a large enough sample size to really figure out what they're doing out on the ice.

This is really important.
As fans we are for the most part really focused in on a short span of games, or the stats we can easily lay our hands on. Neither of which tell the whole story of where a player is right now on his development curve. Admittedly we are not hockey professionals here, but many of us care about the game and this club a lot. As hard as it might be for US to watch the team's struggles this season, imagine what the players, team leaders, coaches and mgmt feel. Yes, they are responsible for it, but it cannot be unfolding how they mapped it out...
I think when they fall short of the post-season as they are most likely to, there have to be consequences, or the damages to the fanbase here in the business community and STHs will be awful to behold. They probably will be anyway.
