Another Jackson Browne favorite, written when he was 16.

Recorded by Nico, Tom Rush and Greg Allman before Browne recorded it in 1973.

Soundtrack appearances[edit]

The best-known soundtrack usage of "These Days" was in the 2001 film The Royal Tenenbaums. Other soundtrack appearances include:

Being born in the 80s, I do remember a lot of synth pop on the radio, but I always thought it sounded “cheesy” especially as I got into the more raw sounding grunge and post grunge rock that came along in the 90s as I was growing up.

But for some reason, I’ve started giving 80s pop in general another chance (almost like a last frontier exploration for me) and holy crap are The Cars a great band.

Couple of favorites:

one of my fav`s, weren`t great live if you were into shows that were filled with intense energy but still love them

have all of Ocasek`s solo albums, lots of great tunes on each

Have Change No Change from Elliot Easton and Ben`s The Lace

J Geils Band

Love Stinks

Centerfold

Musta Got Lost

Obviously, the Geils band were beloved in Boston, but Detroit loved them, too,

PS I know I always say "I remember when that came out" and attach release date/year. I'm sure it irritates some (or all) here.

In the event, "I remember when Freeze Frame came out (1981). It remains the most successful album of their career,

Useless Trivia Dept.:

Who was Peter Wolf's roommate in college?

Who was Peter Wolf married to, if briefly?

The original video is fine

but I like this one, too,

An absolute heartbreaker. One of their finest songs and a personal favorite,

The last one I recall was basically Roland Orzabal solo, as Curt Smith had left the partnership at that point,

I haven't heard their latest, though its been well reviewed,

Other fun fact I always like to throw out, before Tears for Fears they were part of a band that split into two duos - the other two guys going on to form Naked Eyes

Now, I never saw them live. I saw them on The Midnight Special and they were terrible. Terrible.

{Still in the Detroit area in 1978, I didn't know that, along with other Boston based bands of the time, they honed their chops at the Rat,

(The Rathskeller - Wikipedia

(later an occasional haunt when I came to Boston in '82, later still when I moved to Park Drive in '91.)

Even so, I returned a duplicate Beatles album received as a Christmas gift to Harmony House (sic) and bought their fabulous debut. Meticulously helmed by Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker, the entire set crackles with intelligence, mordant wit, and a fine pop sensibility.

A classic with great songs that still sounds fresh today (complete album: 1978),

Not Only, But Also Dept.: Complete albums:

Candy O (1979),

Panorama (1980),

Shake It Up (1981),

Swansong,

Heartbeat City (1984),

I'll leave you to select favorites and find "new" bits. There's a lot there, and a lot of it is good.

Bonus point: Do any remember or encounter local legend "Mr. Butch," who for years used to hang outside the Rat?

Minor Brush With Greatness, Kevin Bacon style. I used to go out with a girl here in Boston, brag no humble brag, a former model. She was friends with Elliot Easton. What a melodic, tasteful guitar player he was/is.

It's unfortunate that Ben became embittered toward Rick, though easy to see why. I believe they reconciled shortly before Orr died.

And I know I shouldn't go there, or here, but let's just say "I don't understand" why Rick left the will he did.
