Up in the Mt. Washington area, I was almost at the summit, lost my grip and caught my leg in the safety rope........... Nah, actually I was walking back to the car after getting an ice cream cone and stepped on a large rock in the gravel parking lot. Twisted ankle, two broken bones.

"Just a lick of your ice cream cone"

Are you seriously telling me the latter scenario was the case?

No Die Hard heroics?

My kingdom for an ice cream cone?

There are rabbits here in Watertown who would put you to shame.

In the event, mend well, and the next time you go for a cone

Mind the gap,

I’ll often quote movie and song lyrics, and people will comment that nobody knows what the hell I’m talking about most of the time. However, I found someone who recognized my Tears for Fears reference this morning which makes it all worth it.

Same here.

My brother Michael delights in my incessant references and asides per Frasier,, MASH, Seinfeld, sundry TV & movies, music, Bruins lore and news, political history, current events, et. al.

My brother Bob rolls his eyes.

What was the Tears For Fears reference?

Joji and The Weeknd are, for my money, the two best singers in modern pop because they actually do music that's different sounding and what people want to hear.

Will check. Thank you.

We were discussing human nature and the persistence of war throughout history. A guy mentioned that everybody wants to rule the world.

Fun fact - TFF got that song title from a lyric in The Clash’s “Charlie Don’t Surf”.

Yep, and legend has it Joe Strummer confronted Roland Orzabal about it once, telling him he owed Joe royalties on the song. Orzabal handed Joe a five pound note and said "That should cover it." Which is ironic, because Strummer so obviously lifted the title and lyrics of Charlie Don't Surf from the movie Apocalypse Now.

Yeah, I remember reading about it in either the Strummer or Clash bio (can’t remember which one) and always thought it was a funny story. Strummer was a master lyricist.

The Clash is one of my five #1 favorite bands (I know, an oxymoron), but they could be complete dicks at times (like a lot of rock stars).

I was really shocked on Christmas Day, 2002 to learn of Strummer's death. Very surprised.

Yes, the "agitpop" could be a bit much -- three album sides worth on Sandinista! -- but Joe believed in his socialist politics and you have to give him credit for sticking to his guns.

Also, I didn't know he had been a vegetarian since the early 70s.

Finally, it's not very nice, but MIck Jones has not aged well (who has?),

Mick looks like an average 67 year old guy to me. I actually respect that and think it's kind of "punk" of him to do the anti-rockstar thing and not dye his hair, fill in his receding hairline, etc. whiten his teeth, botox, etc.

As for the Clash, I like a couple of their songs but can't say I'm a huge fan. And Joe Strummer was a complicated man for sure. There's the famous story of how devastated he was during the Gulf War when the army was misappropriating Rock the Casbah as a rallying song and navy pilots playing the song while dropping bombs on Baghdad.

Meh, the socialist thing never bothered me. The day I look to rock stars for advice on politics or economics is the day I give up on everything. Besides, enough of Joe's lyrics dealt with the hypocrisy of being a rock star (White Man In Hammersmith Palais, Garage Band, Death or Glory) that I truly believe he was in on the joke; even if they themselves were ripe with the same hypocrisy (US Festival).

But he could still be a dick.

That was well outweighed by the way they embraced their fans and truly believed they were a band for the people. Two statements about The Clash I will go to my grave believing - They are "The only band that matters", and "We need them now more than we needed them then". The Clash were rebels, and even if they were manufactured rebellion, I didn't care. To quote Marlon Brando in "The Wild One" when asked what he was rebelling against, he replied "Whatta you got?" That's The Clash to me.

As for Mick not looking his best? Well, he's not got much of a canvas to start with. Joe and Paul were the lookers, Mick and Topper? Not so much.
