Despite it's irrelevance in the universe, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame finally found it's missing Link.

The opening song to the Congressional hearings on UFO'S

I think I've posted this at least twice here.

One of my all-time favorite videos. The look on the guy's face after he accidentally puts out his butt on the doomsday button is priceless and encapsulates the absurdity, the insanity, the human stupidity of nuclear weapons.

Springsteen is playing two at Gillette next week and the tickets are cheap.

Never seen him live.
Not a mega fan, but definitely have some faves.

He was my father in law’s favorite.

I love this stuff:

I tripped across this by accident...new to me but the band listed in the Elephant 6 (and beyond) really good stuff. The Minders were involved. Someone out there took the time to create a Elephant spotify playlist if you're interested.

The Elephant 6 Recording Company is a loosely defined musical collective from the United States. Notable bands associated with the collective include the Apples in Stereo, Beulah, Circulatory System, Elf Power, the Minders, Neutral Milk Hotel, of Montreal, and the Olivia Tremor Control. Although bands in Elephant 6 explore many different genres, they have a shared interest in psychedelic pop of the 1960s, with particular influence from bands such as the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and the Zombies. Their music sometimes features intentionally low fidelity production and experimental recording techniques.

The collective started in Ruston, Louisiana in the late 1980s. The name was occasionally used to denote the home recordings made by four high school friends: Bill Doss, Will Cullen Hart, Jeff Mangum, and Robert Schneider. After high school, Schneider formed the Apples in Stereo; Doss, Hart, and Mangum formed the Olivia Tremor Control; and Mangum independently formed Neutral Milk Hotel. These three bands would serve as the basis for Elephant 6, and soon, many other bands joined. Athens, Georgia, and Denver, Colorado, became major hub cities, and the mid-to-late 1990s represented the peak years of activity for the collective.

Totally great stuff. I love The Olivia Tremor Control, made two of my all time favorites/

I like the Apples in Stereo as well as some other smaller bands. The only one that leaves me cold is Of Montreal. I just get nothing from them overall.

The Elephant Six documentary is being released in select theaters. I gotta get to see it!

I used to work for SNL (late 90’s early 2000’s). My first gig was in duplication/editing. I worked with five other people in a small suite on the 4th floor of the Brill Building overlooking Broadway. Sweet gig for a 24 year old, though the pay was light.

The other five people in the office were struggling actors, writers, musicians, etc. We used to alternate playing the music we liked in the office. One of the guys played bass in an Elephant 6-esque band from Jersey called The Gwens. They went on tour with Essex Green and another E6 band. He was listening to NMH when Mangum was working at an underground station in NJ. He got me into the whole E6 catalog. First NMH, then OTM, then the rest.

I got to see NMH and Circulatory System in Brooklyn in 2015.

I love this thread. Good memories.

I donated a few hundred dollars to the doc years ago, when they were in pre-production. I got a signed poster from the OTM guys and my name in the credits. And an invite to the opening in NYC. Never got there.

Also, if you like the E6 groups and bands like The Shins, check out Papercuts. They have a great album called Fading Parade which has the same feel.

That is awesome! Too bad you couldn’t make it but I take it you’ll see it soon enough given your obvious fandom.

Lucky you...Cool gig. Farley, Hartman, Ferrell, Sandler, Norm SNL days?

Some of the Elephant 6 bands I listened (since downloaded) include brass/horns. Something about marching band stuff in rock music I really enjoy.

I was there right after that grouping, although Will Ferrell was still a cast member. It was the Jimmy Fallon, Chris Parnell, Rachel Dratch, Tina Fey, Darrell Hammond, Chris Kattan, etc. era of SNL. It was cool for my first real job out of college, but it paid almost nothing.

With regards to the E6 groups, the essentials, imho, are:

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Olivia Tremor Control - Dusk at Cubist Castle
The Apples in Stereo - Fun Trick Noisemaker
Circulatory System - S/T
The Minders - Hooray For Tuesday
Beulah - When Your Heartstrings Break
Elf Power - When the Red King Comes
