It's taken a while to sink in, but I'd like to say a few things about Sinead. I first became aware of her at the old Spit/Axis club. A DJ there one night played Mandinka off The Lion and The Cobra, and I was hooked. That wailing, the warbling, the emotion, the roughness that could quickly turn to her voice ringing like a bell. I bought the CD the next day.

Then she did a Prince tune. I thought she sold out, but no, it was heart wrenchingly beautiful, and though Prince wrote the lyrics (obviously), it was her song the whole way. She belonged to the world now, much to my chagrin, not to mention her detriment.

Then she ripped up a picture, and the world punished her. Time has certainly been on her side, and not the world's. She already knew what we would eventually find out. She was funny like that.

You see, the world wanted a pop star, and Sinead was a punk. Right up to the end. The record company wanted a pretty Irish girl, she shaved her head. Ireland wanted a muse, she gave it the finger. She was brash and bold, and broken, but that was her strength. Fragile like a flower, but with a backbone of steel. We knew she was crazy, she knew she was crazy, but God damn it, she was right.

And through it all, was that voice, from a whisper to a scream. It always brings me back to a time when I was also flipping the bird to the world, and she was my soundtrack. Rest in Power, brave one.

Damn. Mixed feelings toward Robbie and how the whoIe breakup and Last Waltz stuff went down, but you can't deny he wrote and played some tremendous music.

I can't believe Garth Hudson is the last member of the Band still living, when he was way older than the rest of them.
