I think I must be the only person who hated the Mario Bros. movie.

(I just wanted to use this gif again, not hating for having an opinion. I didn't like everything either but it was fun.)

How do I block someone? Wheres the button at?

'Twould be an honor.

It probably didn't help that I saw it with 4 middle schoolers and all I heard on the drive home was Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches! Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches, Peaches!"

My issues:

1) It's not so much a movie as it is an outline of a movie. It zips by and nothing feels properly developed. There's essentially zero character development--the only character who has even the semblance of an arc during the movie spends the bulk of it imprisoned off-screen.

2) The characters aren't so much characters as they are singular character traits personified. Peaches is heroic. Mario's tenacious. Toad is brave. Bowser is power-hungry. Luigi is mildly timid. And so on.

3) It looks terrific but the set pieces are disappointing. Inspired action sequences should have been a slam dunk given the source material. And yet, on the few occasions where the action starts to become thrilling, it putters out almost immediately. It would have been a much better film if only for 5 minutes that felt like we were immersed in the game rather than just an homage to the game.

4) It is not terribly funny. Aside from Jack Black hamming it up, and the ghost star thing stealing the movie, there aren't any laughs. Maybe I just didn't play enough Mario Bros. and couldn't appreciate the easter eggs (of which I'm sure I missed more than a few) - I pretty much aged out at the original Mario Kart.

I think I read somewhere that the director said it was basically a "speedrun" so they didn't even intend to flush everything out. I think they didn't want to go too ham and played it safe. I think Miyamoto said it was why it took forever for another Nintendo movie to be made. But I feels you on most of your points.
