Rochester NY
TCM on a roll tonight. Night Of The Hunter, Do The Right Thing, The Third Man, New York Ninja
New York Ninja was in TCM??? I got it on disk but still haven't watched it yet because you don't watch crazy shit like that alone for the first time if you can help it.

And Fred Ward will always be Remo Williams in my heart. Now he sleeps with the Graboids.

I just watched VVitch for the first time today. I’m digging that director, will watch the rest of his stuff
Watched the lighthouse. I’m not sure how I fell about that one yet. It definitely held my attention throughout.

Wasn't a huge fan of The VVItch the first and only time I watched it but I might have to revisit. It's been a long time. The Lighthouse is fantastic - and also the inspiration for my FOG logo. I saw that in the theater by myself. Imagine that shit lol

After giving it some time I’ve come to accept that I like it. It was shot beautifully, and the dafoe scene, well I don’t want to spoil anything but it’s basically every dafoe scene is incredible.
I’m not not positive what was real and what wasnt.

The Witch is the most overrated, boring slog of a movie I've ever seen and I find it synonymous with my idea of pretentious reviewers and movies now.

Real world reception wasn't terribly different from mine. Some people love it and rave over it, some hate it. The RT score was crazy high for critic reviews and very middling to low for fan score. I think it's beautifully shot, incredibly well-acted, and has great cinematography. As a technical piece it's a master work. As a representation of Puritan life and views it's well-done.

It was marketed as a horror movie though, it's categorized as a horror movie. Movies and works of fiction at large are meant to be enjoyable. There's nothing scary in that movie in any way. Not in terms of jump scares, gore, or suspense. Watching a single family of Puritans be Puritans for two hours is one of the most boring things I can think of.

It's a technical master work and an abject failure of horror while being the film equivalent of watching paint dry. Hereditary was pretty good though. Midsommar was almost as bad as The Witch.

Very fair, I'm happy if other people enjoy it. I feel very passionately about my opinion of it though.

For frame of reference, and I do believe it's a testament to the basis of my personal opinion at least (and because I did mention it in the post), the RT score is at 90 percent in 332 reviews for critic score and 59 percent in 25,000+ audience scores. That's an absolutely insane disparity with a very large sample size.

Again, happy if other people can enjoy it. I do find it to be the definition of modern day critic and generalized art pretentiousness though.

I will say horror is subjective though. Aside from maybe finding different things scary, I've also seen some of the worst horror you can find so it's hard to impress me in that regard.
