Regardless of what they do behind the bench and up in the executive booth, the Canucks are poised for a massive changeover this off-season. Sutter, Benn, Pearson and Edler are all on expiring contracts. And Beagle, Roussel and Eriksson will have one year left on their deals. I could see at least two of those guys as buy-outs. So that's as many as eight veterans gonzo. You can basically add in Ferland who likely never plays again, and that makes nine.

Still a chance Holtby goes in the expansion draft, but of course the way he's playing and the way the Canucks are playing in front of him, that might not happen Myers will be left unprotected, but the Canucks may have to plumb their prospect pool to induce Seattle to take him. Looking elsewhere, potential 'trade pieces' might be Virtanen and Juolevi.

But you get the picture. Massive changes are coming. I think that's the reason the owner has Benning in a vice-grip. No more trades and UFA signings with lopsided term. Sign Hughes and Pettersson to extensions and then fill in the rest of the roster with either 'replacement level players' or kids on entry level contracts.

Of course the Canucks are a private company so we never see the bottom line. But as a business they have to be taking a financial blood-bath right now. It's almost certain that the owner has seen enough.

there was another tweet by blake price. saying that from an NHL source if canucks lose saturday... heads will be chopped off. im exaggerating that part but you know what i mean. could the team playing this poorly because of the way benning constructed the team..

Incoming Beagle and Myers hat tricks on Saturday then.

You just know that, in a game we NEED to lose for change to happen, we're going to win. Book it.

Our defence looks very far from being competitive. Edler looks done. The pipeline is thin on defence and has been Bennings entire tenure.

The problem is it seems under Benning everyone has gotten used to it taking years to add a single competent player. Take the leagues most recent favourite punching bag for example, John Chayka. Was never able to work out the forwards but When he started his back end was (2015-16):

OEL-M.Stone
N.Grossman-C.Murphy
K.Dalhbeck-Z.Michalek
k.Connauton

M.Smith
L.Domingue

Two seasons later (2017-18) Arizona had:

OEL-N.Hjarlmasson
A.Goligoski-J.Demers
Chychrun-L.Schenn
K.Connauton

A.Raanta
D.Kuemper

There are always good players available to be had, we just need a GM that can target those guys rather than the Sbisa's and the Gudbranson's and the Pouliot's.

Pretty much everyone out-of-market (who doesn't work for one of the game-hosting TV stations) knows what's up:

That's what I've been wondering about. You can only speculate on what's been going on in the room, but rather than the players giving up on the coach which is what normally happens it seems more like after a good playoff run they're demoralized from the summers losses. So rather than starting with the coach Benning should be the first one fired here, ride it out with Green and let your new management whenever that may come decide on coaching.

Tbf, I think all 3 of these people have been critical of Benning's decisions throughout his reign. (as they should have been, of course)

this thread was six and a half years ago, late june 2014

GMJB moves so far - HF grades

a majority of us knew this was going to be a total complete disaster almost literally the moment he arrived. ryan miller hadn't even been signed yet when that thread was made.

(in post #132, i call for him to be fired for drafting virtanen)

Yeah, I'm surprised so many people's tipping point is the Sibsa extension. I was already off the boat by the time the Kesler/Pick 6/Miller decisions were made, more so because they confirmed that they would be no rebuild and that Benning would target the wrong pieces in a retool anyway

Tbh idk how confident I feel with FA making these decisions, lol. Content with Gillis, Futa, and a few others. Terrified of getting locked into hiring someone half rate

Unfortunately, waiting is also our only option too. We don't have the cap space to build a contender, and Aqua will never allow another rebuild( if he allowed one in the first place).

Which is why bottoming out this year may just be the best thing to happen. Not only do finally get rid of Benning, but the upcoming draft is looking to have upwards of five defensemen in the top ten. That's huge for us. If we draft in the top five this year and maybe have another lukewarm year following it, we'll have a decent crop of players coming up who hopefully don't turn into Juolevi.

From the armies after the game. Pretty much sums things up:

“So now they have an offseason in which they lost out on a player who torches them on the regular; have a team that continues to play tremendously poor defense; have a Lotto Line that has a case of the sads; have an in-house band named Jake Virtanen and the Healthy Scratches; and now have stories of former players — such as Chris Tanev, who gave his blood, sweat, tears and teeth to the organization — feeling disrespected with how they were treated.”

Benning has been a dangerous mix of complete incompetence and arrogance. And we are seeing the end game of that incompetence right now. Or at least I hope it’s the end game.

Don't forget the only top 10 valued franchise to lose value in the last 7 years and an owner that is now cheap. The only way out of this mess is pulling pin, blow up the whole front office, send out garbage money and asset (pick, Gaudette, whatever) and plan for a hell of an off-season that an owner is going to have to help pay the way out of.

Could you imagine how bad we would be if Hoglander didn't pan out? We are terrible but Ottawa bad potential. Oh and the draft is pretty piss poor as well this year so tanking will not solve our problems either. It will add a nice piece but not likely a game changer even if we win 1st overall, which will probably happen now.
