Regardless of what they do behind the bench and up in the executive booth, the Canucks are poised for a massive changeover this off-season. Sutter, Benn, Pearson and Edler are all on expiring contracts. And Beagle, Roussel and Eriksson will have one year left on their deals. I could see at least two of those guys as buy-outs. So that's as many as eight veterans gonzo. You can basically add in Ferland who likely never plays again, and that makes nine.
Still a chance Holtby goes in the expansion draft, but of course the way he's playing and the way the Canucks are playing in front of him, that might not happen Myers will be left unprotected, but the Canucks may have to plumb their prospect pool to induce Seattle to take him. Looking elsewhere, potential 'trade pieces' might be Virtanen and Juolevi.
But you get the picture. Massive changes are coming. I think that's the reason the owner has Benning in a vice-grip. No more trades and UFA signings with lopsided term. Sign Hughes and Pettersson to extensions and then fill in the rest of the roster with either 'replacement level players' or kids on entry level contracts.
Of course the Canucks are a private company so we never see the bottom line. But as a business they have to be taking a financial blood-bath right now. It's almost certain that the owner has seen enough.
