But we are accruing cap space!Holloway has 6 goals, would be tied for 3rd on the Oilers.
I pointed this out in another thread but we replaced him with a very similar style player, same age, same draft pedigree but with a more proven track record of scoring at pro levels. But for less then half the cap hit and in the process improved a draft pick by 40-50 spots. I’ll bet that by the end of the year Holloway and Podkolzin have similar offensive numbers.
As for Broberg, love his game but the guy is a bandaid. Cheap shot, freak injury or just plain bad luck, I get the feeling it’ll always be something with him and he’s be one of those injured or recovering from injury type players, he’s got Klefbom written all over him. When he’s available he’ll be a really solid player though, probably the perfect NHL player these days, injured until playoffs but really good.
Does he get more opportunity there? Podz has been given gravy minutes and linemates here. There is no chance in hell that Pod and Holloway finish the season with similar numbers as Holloway receives more opportunity in St. Louis.
Holloway should have been locked up but our management doubled down on the now by bringing in some old washed up wingers instead of ensuring that we continue to be a competitive team in the future.
Not really understanding this comment. Pods has mostly played with Draisaitl, one of the best passers and players on the planet. he's been glued to him much of the season. lately he's had McDrai. You don't get more opportunity than that. There is no chance in hell that Pod and Holloway finish the season with similar numbers as Holloway receives more opportunity in St. Louis.

This is the thing. Podz has been gifted stellar opportunity here, had been setup constantly and has 1G in 21GP here. You can't get better linemates than Podz has had here. Thing is even guys considered lukewarm here like Foegele, McLoed, Holloway, when they got minutes with Drai they did far more with it. Just a fact.Does he get more opportunity there? Podz has been given gravy minutes and linemates here.
You're not wrong. But with a new team and new environment that maybe buys him a bit of rope. His high work ethic and physicality buys him a bit more. Knocking out that one dude buys even more. This is the thing. Podz has been gifted stellar opportunity here, had been setup constantly and has 1G in 21GP here. Well...Holloway is getting PP time in St Louis so thats going to help.Does he get more opportunity there? Podz has been given gravy minutes and linemates here.
I've heard this theory out there a couple times by different analysts/ex-players. That Forwards need PP time and puck touches to really get comfortable or get going... It seems like alot of the forwards we bring in take forever to get going or don't get going at all.Well...Holloway is getting PP time in St Louis so thats going to help.
PP time is virtually guaranteed to pump up the offensive numbers.
33% of his goals came on the PP.
Also I think he has been getting top 6 minutes in most if not all 24 of his games so far.
Podkolzin isnt getting a sniff on the PP here and I think he has only played around 5 games in the top 6 so far.
It takes a bit of time to adjust to playing alongside McDavid and Draisaitl as well but IMO he is showing quite well.
I would like to see more so I hope Knoblauch continues with the Podz/top 6 experiment for at least another 10 games.
Interesting. I wouldnt be adverse to seeing that...at least on the 2nd unit.I've heard this theory out there a couple times by different analysts/ex-players. Kind of a hard situation though, cause like you don't want to break up one of the best PP units in recent history. But maybe the team would be better off sacrificing some PP points for the good of individual performances on this team.
I remember it was brought it with Pool too when people were wondering how to get him going. And Rob Brown recently mentioned it too. It makes sense, as a forward you'd want to feel confident in your game with some puck touches... and we never provide that to players outside our Core 5 forwards, which could lead to regression or stalling in their games. Even our 2nd Unit barely barely gets looks cause our 1st unit takes the majority of the time.Interesting. I wouldnt be adverse to seeing that...at least on the 2nd unit.
Good post and I agree.I remember it was brought it with Pool too when people were wondering how to get him going. And Rob Brown recently mentioned it too. With PP1 flailing this year, I'd be down to try it this year, moreso than any other year. We can win games 5v5 these days anyways, couldn't in the past, we were very dependent on our PP.
I said Podkolzin has more of a proven track record of scoring at pro levels. Learn to read. Not really understanding this comment. That said I agree with your conclusion on the washed up wingers. There was no reason to lose Holloway, and he's certainly not being replaced.
What? Holloway is scoring more than Podz at the NHL level.
Lets not pretend theres any cap savings involved either. The Oilers blew 4M on Arvid and 3m on Skinner neither of whom are all that helpful.
We could have had both Holloway and Podz in anycase. I think argument could be had the team is better with the pace of those players than obtaining more old washed up guys
You were probably someone who cried about them not having any wingers for Draisaitl, they go out and get a few perennial 20/30 goal guys and now you’re crying about guys who couldn’t do anything when they were here. There is no chance in hell that Pod and Holloway finish the season with similar numbers as Holloway receives more opportunity in St. Louis.

one is 23 playing his first full season, the other is 31 and peakedIt would be nice to have Holloway instead of Skinner, but I'm still not too bothered.
Holloway would only be playing 5v5 here and he's tied with Janmark for 5v5 points. Not the greatest loss.
I mean Janmark has more points than every forward not named McDavid or Draisatl currently. It would be nice to have Holloway instead of Skinner, but I'm still not too bothered.

Meh. Pod and Emberson show how easy it is to add a little youth every year when you don't have a hibernating GM.one is 23 playing his first full season, the other is 31 and peaked
Janmark is serviceable, but in order to sustain success they're gonna need younger players stepping up
Youth or GOOD youth? Both Podz and Emberson have been fine but so far this year Holloway and Broberg have been better.Meh. Pod and Emberson show how easy it is to add a little youth every year when you don't have a hibernating GM.
I really think the way they run the PP also limits how many vets want to come here on short contracts. Skinner did it because he seems desperate to play in the playoffs, and likely thought he was a shoe-in to play on McDavid or Draisaitl's wing, but most offensive guys get a huge chunk of their points on the PP. It's a tough sell for someone looking to boost their next contract to come here and get no opportunity on the PP.Good post and I agree.
Utilizing PP2 more might also create more urgency in PP1 which all too often seems to get too complacent. Especially when they have the bulk of 2 minutes to try and pass the puck into the net or just simply default to the predictable.
And they should be. They both cost significantly more in assets and salary.Youth or GOOD youth? Both Podz and Emberson have been fine but so far this year Holloway and Broberg have been better.
Right, but it didn't have to be that way had management not slept on it. We lost two valuable pieces for basically nothing as there isn't a chance in hell the draft picks they returned will turn into something as useful as them. And they should be. They both cost significantly more in assets and salary.
Unfortunately the salary cap exists.
