When was the last time we made a splash? I love it. It's finally sinking in. All these deadlines, we watched teams around us get better. This year, we're the team getting better and the teams around us are watching.

I'll bump this thread in 4 years after Vanek proved to be worthless / signs with wild ...and Collberg proves to be a 30 goal scorer with tonnes of heart.

Even rejean houle got lucky once or twice

It was a good trade.

BUT WE ARE NOW, OFFICIALLY NOT "BUILDING THROUGH THE DRAFT".

Fair?

Not fair.

Look at our prospect pool. We have so many identical and inter-changeable pieces that are just like Collberg.

Sometimes you have to take a chance.

Minnesota may have first dibs on Vanek this summer. If they do, they will be stretching it to keep Moulson, another opportunity.

We are still building through the draft. The loss of Collberg is a minor blip. Especially with the reports that he may have had a concussion. The kid is injury prone.

Why would I apologize to MB? Vanek isn't resigning here and he won't be the difference in us winning anything.

He has stated numerous times that he will test free agency. Other GMs have come out and said that they didn't want to trade for a player that made it clear to the league that he intends to go to free agency.

Unless people think that the appeal of playing for our mediocre team will entice him to stay, he's gone come summertime.

You have to take these kinds of opportunities when they present themselves, even if it means deviating from your plan.

Just no way to pass this up.

If we don't re-sign Vanek it's no big loss. If we do re-sign him its a huge steal. This is a great move.

Bergevin has quietly put assembled the deepest and most skilled Habs roster in years. Gone are the days of having defensemen on the 4th line, 4th liners on the 3rd line, and 3rd liners in the top 6. Gone are the days of rushing young players simply because we had no other way to fill the gaping holes in our lineup.

Price, Budaj, Dubnyk, Tokarski

We are deep at every single position, and all of that depth is of NHL caliber. We have a legitimate top6, a solid 3rd line, a decent D core, and an elite goalie. We also have the depth to be able to withstand the guaranteed injuries of a playoff run.

On top of that, we have a deep prospect pool with good prospects at every position.

And to that, I tip my hat to Marc Bergevin.

I'm gonna say this...with the forward depth, Price and a decent d-core, if the Habs had a competent coach, they'd be favorites to come out of the east along Boston and Pittsburgh.

The trickle down effect. The habs needed it and they got it. Finally another legitimate offensive winger. Pushing one of Gionta or Gallagher out of the top 6 and on to the 3rd line giving habs serious scoring depth.

The only move I really didn't like was the recent Weaver pick up, and the political Briere signing. I still don't like either move, but he's done everything he said he would do... He's added size, he's kept prospects and picks (other than this move that he couldn't pass up), and has methodically made this a tougher team to play against... This is a bit of a gamble move, but I like what he's done. Calculated risk gets back a true sniper.

MB did well.

i must say i was very worried again, but he proved me wrong

Vanek is a top 6 man, and with ton's up stuff......

thanks MB for stepping up, and making the habs better without giving the farm

I would make this trade a million times over.

We are in a strong playoff contention spot. Obtaining a proven 40 goal scorer at this price is unbelievable, with vanek, our top 6 is arguably one of the most balanced in the east. We've instant made the habs a dark horse.

I don't agree with that. This was a good opportunity to get a great player without giving up much. We didn't give a 1st round draft pick, we didn't give up a young roster player nor did we give up a top prospect...pretty much intact!

One good trade for a guy who will be gone at the end of the year does not a good GM make.

I was seriously doubting him lately. Building through the draft when you constantly get the 18-25th pick? Makes no sense, since we don't have a top team that can wait 3-5 years to have those guys possibly make an impact.

This trade changes everything. Bergevin understood that problem and tried to solve it. Maybe Vanek won't resign here, but at least we went for it and aren't going to really miss anything we gave away. It's a pretty good trade.

This trade is amazing. With Price coming back fully healed at some point and if he stays hot off his Olympic gold medal confidence boosting win we maybe could contend. Maybe we make the ECF or SCF. In an event like that if Vanek was getting good minutes/linemates, finding success and going deep in the playoffs, loving the celebrity he would get being the star forward, who knows maybe he decides to resign. He gets the experience for a couple months, anythings possible.

100% agreed...this Montreal Canadiens team, while still lacking strength down the middle, at least IMO, is a very deep team at forward, defense and goaltending

Oh FFS guys.

This trade is a steal. MB went out and addressed arguably our biggest need, at least for the rest of the season, and in return gave away peanuts.

Gotta give credit where its due dammit!
