The cinematography for this from the post apocalyptic look to the cities in flames to even the car chase are out of this world phenomenal. This has been outstanding so far.

HBO is crushing it.

I didn't see it yet, hoping I later tonight, but it sounds like it was pretty nuts. There wasn't any jump scares was there?

That was a great ending and transition to credits. This show is really, really good

Definitely check out the post-episode content like the interviews and behind the scenes content. Really shines a light to how they filmed this.

Yeah man this was something special.

In convincing my SO to watch it off (she tried Walking Dead and thought it was so bad she's completely turned off from the zombie apocalypse genre) I agreed that aside from the pilot the show quickly degenerated into formulaic meh. But that pilot was outstanding.

This was even better. I thought the focus around Joel's daughter with tiny sprinkles of impending chaos and catastrophe building up before blowing up was excellent, as was having her POV in the truck as they're trying to escape (that plane crash sequence was unreal. Like seriously imagine zombie chaos happening on a plane)

I still haven't gotten around to actually playing the game and at this point I won't until the season is over at the earliest. But with as little as I know about the story and characters Pascal and Ramsay are immediately magnetic and compelling as Joel and Ellie. Production value was outstanding and the little bites of the post-apocalyptic life we got were perfectly portioned out and explored.

Just outstanding. I might watch it again later tonight. Can't wait for more.

I liked the first half when it was set in 2003, didn't care much for the 2nd half when they jumped forward to the present time.

The best part of the 2nd half is still to come for sure. That part starts a little slow in the game too. Was glad to see them get the Boston QZ out of the way already

That was actually really good. Unlike the dipshits who wrote Halo, these guys at least paid attention to the source material and adapted it pretty well.

Absolutely loved them using Gustavo Santaolalla's music from the game as the opening too. I'm not the biggest fan of TLOU (gameplay was a bit too simple for me) i absolutely loved the setting and soundtrack.

Couldn’t have asked for a better start. It was perfect in every way. Pedro even sort of looked like video game Joel in physical appearance by the end

Damn, they really spared no detail. All the way down to the I-183 sign, which the game actually got wrong (should be US 183, there is no I-183).

I guess I’m going to have to get used to some grotesque visuals if I’m going to watch this.

I liked it. Surprised they will be able to jam the whole story into nine episodes.

Had a couple friends work on this show here in Calgary, sounds like they'll be moving shop for season 2. Great season opener, really liked it. The building of tension and the tone of 2003 was something that needed to be done well and was.

Pedro Pascal seems like he's perfect for the lead. Just flashes those sad baby browns and grits that steely jaw and the audience is putty in his hands.

Nothing to jam. In fact, they have plenty of time to pad it out further if this first episode is any indication. All the cutscenes in TLOU Part 1 only amount to about 3 hours. The whole game only takes about 15 hours to beat. And for a TV show we obviously aren't going to spend time on loading screens after our character dies, or show the characters searching countless abandoned buildings for scissors and bottles to craft weapons, or nearly as much random gunplay and fight scenes.

I also liked the 2003 part a bit more than the present time. I was really on the edge of my seat the entire first 20 minutes or so, knowing that shit was about to hit the fan. Then the time jump came, and the dystopian world of 2023 felt a bit too familiar from all the post-apocalyptic world movies and shows over the years. I would have liked to see more of what happened between 2003 and 2023. I'm glad they left the quarantine zone so that we might see what the world looks like beyond these safe zones.

Strong start anyway and will keep watching for sure.

I got to see Pascal eat his lunch.

Life = complete. I should probably do an AMA, maybe even make a line of T-shirts or something.

Please, no. The show is the equivalent to the The Halo fanbase getting kicked in the nuts, then having it's nuts slowly sewed off with a rusty straight razor.

What pisses ALL OF US in the community off more, is that Halo is by far one of the most rich lore games in existence. And for better for for worse, the developers do care about the story and characters.

343, for all of the flack they get, added a ton of info to Halo: Reach to allow for both Halo: The Fall of Reach (A book released before Halo: CE) to exist alongside each other. It's something I can't see too many other developers doing. Taking a beloved, legendary game like Halo: Reach (A game they didn't develop I might add), and tweaking the story to allow for the plot, characters, and in-game universe events in a 9-10 year old novel (The best video game book ever IMO) to exist alongside it as official canon.

f*** every single person who allowed this travesty to occur.

Great first episode.

They did a perfect job of capturing the opening part of the game. It was very well done.

QZ was a little slow at times.

Liking Pedro as Joel so far but not completely sold on Bella as Ellie yet. We'll see...

Agreed with everything, I also think I'm one of the few in this thread that hasn't played the game so I was going in blind besides knowing it was some sort of world falling apart / zombie type show.

I thought it was really good. Both the wife and I commented on how we could feel the tension as they are trying to escape - they nailed the emotional resonance with that sequence. I was also happy with how it was pretty faithful to the game but also was just good TV.

I mean the Boston QZ was familiar but I thought done well. Like well enough that I didn't mind the bites of story we got but am glad that it was just bites and the show will move on to a wider world. Maybe there's more apocalyptic dystopia I haven't watched but it wasn't like The Walking Dead (or at least the first four seasons, didn't get to the Negan stuff) where they spend a whole season in one new designated survivor zone.
