The Kreider Thread (1/22: Kreider fine, skating at practice)

Steve Kournianos

@thedraftanalyst
The AHL didnt teach Kreider how to stop scoring goals, make him slower or make him stupid.

Kreider can score 2 goals in 48 games this year for all I care. He doesnt drive the train. What I want to see is either a steady or lightning quick improvement every year. Personally I think he scores 10-12 over 48 just by being surrounded by good players and the lack of quality goaltending in the division and EC.

Power forwards take a little time to develop. Adam Deadmarsh, Billy Guerin, gary Roberts, Adam Graves, Keith Primeau and John Leclair all struggled as rookies and didnt score jack.

Small sample sizes make certain players appear much more than they may be. Larger sample sizes and consistencty are always more important. At this point the overall sample indicates what most people think which is he is a solid but not an all world prospect at this current time who needs time to develop several key aspects of his game still. That's a very fair analysis and leaves room to acknowledge his flaws while also saying look there's something here clearly

Hasn't he only played like 30 something games? That's not that much more than 18. Plus, I'd trust the smaller sample more since those are the types of linemates he's more likely to play.

The debate is pretty ridiculous. Krieder more than proved himself as much as if not more than any Ranger did, under the most intense and pressured of circumstances. He's not just some overrated cocky kid who is trying to waltz his way onto the team, as if we don't yet know him, or his character, or his skill. He is a Ranger, period. And from my perspective, he deserves the respect as being one. I'm a die hard fan, and I take the team and its honor seriously. Well, he's earned it.

Sure, he needs to hold his own in camp and he can't let up a second. But he's not just some AHL'er looking for a spot. He's a Ranger, working to keep it.

That is all...

#NYR Clear that Chris Kreider must earn spot with team, not expect one. Torts said there "better not be any illusions" but doubts there are.

Andrew Gross ‏@AGrossRecord
Regarding Kreider, Torts says he does not believe Kreider has "illusions" that his spot his secure b/c of playoffs. "Better not be."

Steve Zipay ‏@stevezipay
Torts says rookie Chris Kreider needs to push to earn spot on the team. "He has gifts" but must improve all-around game, he says

Chris Kreider far from a lock to make NY Rangers roster despite breakout performance during 2012 playoffs

By Pat Leonard / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

“He’s still young, a kid that came in and played some really good games and then was God awful in some games during the playoffs,” said Tortorella, who noted that Kreider has practiced “very well” this week. “He has the gift of skating, he’s a big strong kid.… To get on the ice, you’ve got to help yourself and help the team defensively. You can’t hurt them. And that makes me feel more comfortable to get him on the ice.”

Kreider said that’s exactly what he worked on while playing for the Connecticut Whale during the lockout: “to show them that I can be defensively reliable.” His numbers in 33 games with the Rangers’ AHL affiliate (5 goals, 7 assists, 55 PIM) were underwhelming, but he prioritized his work in his own zone.

Kreider scored just five goals in 33 games for the AHL Whale during the lockout, but no one in the Rangers’ organization seems the slightest bit concerned over the lack of production.

“I don’t think the game down there is as conducive to Chris scoring as it is here,†general manager Glen Sather said. “He’s one of those guys who’s better in the NHL than the AHL.â€

I didn't realize that he set the record for points for a guy that jumped straight into the playoffs, I thought it was only goals. Why do his haters constantly say it wasn't that impressive? In context, no one has ever had better production in this situation.

Land of no calls..
Comments like the ones in the articles above are why I'm not sweating the details on Kreider. Kid pushes himself every day to better himself. He knows where he needs to improve and he puts his focus on it to get it done. Half the people on this board want to hand him a spot on the roster and yet even CK himself knows he needs to earn it. Keep it up, Chris. :handclap:

Nobody says it's not impressive. People are just saying that this is not the final word on his career and it doesn't excuse everything else in his life. You keep creating strawmen and then you knock them down and pretend like you won an argument, but the argument you are having never took place.

The point made (and repeated) about Kreider was that he has brilliant stretches, but he doesn't seem to be able to keep it up for significant amounts of time. But you keep pretending that what you are arguing against is something different.

The organization isn't going to flat out say he's a lock. In my opinion they are just going through the motions to keep Chris in line working hard but they have every intention of having this guy on the roster.

I will return back to my early question ... If you take away his roster spot who is playing over him?

All I see is people yelling small sample size for the playoffs. Is 33 games really that much bigger of a sample size that 18? The 18 was also in the NHL so it should be more representative.

I think Krieder's defense will improve . Even Chris said taht in the AHL he feels that his defense became more polished which is good. People should be excited to have kreider hagelin and stepan all at a young age

Uh yes he is for no other reason than we have no one else to play over him

Agreed. He isn't guaranteed ice time, but he's pretty much assured a roster spot unless Hrivik or someone similar gets called up out of nowhere.

The Kid is going to be an awesome player the human element of the strike etc has to be considered. I used to take a ton of abuse over my fascination on Logan Couture as Fitzy will recall and my feeling on this kid is just as strong. Be patient ranger fans you have a true gem in this kid.

I almost didn't want to post this for fear that the runaway hype train would get rolling downhill.

But pretty high praise from Nash on the Michael Kay show:

Rick Nash said:
On Chris Kreider, “I’ve talked to him quite a bit. It was tough for him to come in and have a roller coaster in the playoffs. The coaches have been working with him a lot. It’s just the different little things that young players need to learn. From what I have seen on the ice he has all the tools to be a superstar in this league.â€

Yeah, I remember Eric Lindross saying that Brett Lindros is "the better Lindros."

People say stuff. It doesn't mean anything. I am not saying he won't be a superstar, but quoting a teammate means nothing.
I dont think anybody thought different. I think the point was that nash likes what he has seen from kreider

Dude... what is with you and the use of the phrase "Strawmen arguments?" Is that like your catch-phrase? Yes, people are creating straw-men arguments in this thread... we know. Say it again. Jeez, at least change it up every other post lol.

He also says in the interview that he is with "21 other players who have proved to be great players in the NHL"

I'd say that's high praise for Bickel, if anyone.
