He’s not a bad player. I think his lack of speed hurts him. I saw him on a breakaway against the Panthers the other night and he just doesn’t have the extra gear.
Swap AL and Ovi for the remainder of the season. Who wins? Not that the Rangers have much use for a 38-year-old Ovi at this point... Just thinking of Lafreniere's weakness as a skater.

He’s still on pace for 51 points, while playing with superior players next to him..

How can that last sentence hold together?

1 more EVP than Mika, one less than Kreider and 3 less than Trocheck. Notice the huge disparity in PP points. Put him on PP1 in place of Trocheck and He'd probably have 30 points in 35 games.

So he's again the 3rd most productive player on his line at ES?

Don't get me wrong, he's been an asset on that line, but his numbers are certainly inflated by playing on a line with those two (specifically Panarin). I think that helps to offset the fact that he's only playing on PP2.

Regardless, the eye test tells me he's taken another step this year. Good for him.

I wonder how he feels about it all.

He’s a solid NHler, nothing wrong with that.

If he was a 4th round pick he’d probably just be thrilled to be in the show, rather than have this narrative hanging around his neck.

Maybe he cares, maybe he doesn’t, who knows, would be curious what his real perspective is.

I hate threads like this, who cares if he was drafted 1st overall or 15th. He's a legit NHL'er and still has room to grow. He is not a bust, if he was he wouldn't even be serviceable. Everyone and their mother would would have drafted Laf with the 1st pick, it is what it is.

I'd gladly take him on my team.
Always nice to see some positivity sprinkled in to an other wise inflammatory thread. It is true, Laf was the consensus 1OA no matter where you looked. I remember Luc Robitaille (current pres of the Kings) half heartedly lamenting that getting the 2nd overall pick is nice, but you're so close! You still want 1OA. Blake and co would have absolutely picked laf along with every other team in the league. It's tough, but it's nice to see his improvement this year. Definitely still time to grow

You'd think he cares. The difference is tens of millions he's possibly leaving on the table, if he doesn't live up to expectations of a first overall pick.

He's got a perfect role model in Zibanejad to talk to. He wasn't a #1 but he was a top 10 pick who didn't truly break out until his mid 20s. He likely has talked to him about that and how it takes some players time. Keep working and trust your abilities and eventually your time will come if you are dedicated to working every day to get better.

I'm sure he's got some perspective, he gets to be a millionaire athlete in NYC on a cup contender. Life could be a lot worse

Rangers are a powerhouse team and Lafreniere's one of the reasons why.

They're a good team and he's a good player who's contributing for sure. Let's not get carried away and say they are some powerhouse and that he's carrying them or anything.

There are a lot of players in the league who could be doing what he's doing with Panarin and Tro right now.

He's alright player. Not close to being worthy of #1 overall, but considering it was a massive fluke that NYR picked #1 that year anyway, we can say that justice has been served, and he's playing like fair mid-round pick.

For those that don’t watch the Rangers on the regular I can tell you he’s a completely different player this year. He’s holding onto the puck and making plays something that he did NOT do his first couple of years. My only complaint is that he doesn’t shoot more often. He’s got a good shot but a lot of times he dishes it off, which most of the guys on this team do. Drives me crazy.

Confidence is oozing right now. Looks like a top line winger. Would easily be a 30+ point player right now if on the top power play unit.
