First off, hat tip to @datsyukfan for calling this out. I wanted to create a new thread both to bring it to the forefront, but also put some numbers around the claim, which seems spot on. Here are the splits from when Todd McLellan took over, both with and without Copp in the lineup. I didn't include the Toronto game on Dec 27 as McLellan was named coach earlier that day and didn't have the chance to coach the team prior to that game.
Red Wings record with McLellan + Copp in the lineup
Red Wings record with McLellan but without Copp in the lineup
I'm not sure how much 'credit' to give Copp for the strong start under McLellan - there could be a new coach bounce that played a role in the hot start- but I'd imagine Copp's absence is playing a role in the poor performance since his injury. The bad news is he's out for the season.
Red Wings record with McLellan + Copp in the lineup
- 15 wins, 2 OTL, 4 losses
- 1.52 points per game
Red Wings record with McLellan but without Copp in the lineup
- 5 wins, 0 OTL, 11 losses
- 0.63 points per game
