The Impact of Losing Andrew Copp

I wish we still had the angry reaction because this doesn’t fit my narrative of Copp being trash.
I sort of agree with @FissionFire about the competition taking a step up, but look at those teams we beat back when Copp was still in the lineup. There was a lot of quality and we had several impressive wins during that stretch. So what is the reason for the strong performance before Copp's injury?
  • Was it a new coach bounce? There's undoubtedly some truth in that.
  • Was it due to hot goaltending? Seems fairly unlikely given we were getting slightly above league average play there. It's tough to make the case the goalies were stealing games for us.
  • Was it due to poor competition? It doesn't quite look that way.
Of course correlation does not equal causation. Hopefully Kasper can claim that role in Copp's absence.

I've never been on the Copp hate train, for all the criticism around Kane and Tarasenko, and Copp and Compher, i'm maintained that Kane and Copp have value here and need to stick around. Copp isn't flashy, but he consistently does a lot of things right. People's hangup on him not being "a true 2C" created a lot of senseless hate this season. We are hurting without him.

Copp is, and always has been, a pretty important piece to this team during this transition period to the kids. It's a shame that this board has decided to turn him into the physical representation of all their dissatisfaction with the franchise over the last few years.

His salary, his pay, his leadership, and more than anything, his example of doing all the things being asked of him to help this team get through this time so it can start contending with no acknowledgement is commendable. He wants to help put the franchise back on good footing yet many of look like he's some kind of anchor weight holding this team back from competing for a Cup. That is so insane, I can't even wrap my head around the logic of it.

He's going to play out his contract (which in no way is hurting us), and I'll spoil the angry rants before it happens, will probably resign with the Wings as his reward for this yeoman's work he's been doing for the last three years. He'll be 32, pretty busted, and he'll get some weird 3yr, 2AAV, deal where he rolls around on the 4th line as a vet leader/healthy scratch (the forward equivalent of Petry).

I'm holding out hope the Wings can claim a playoff spot this season, but with Kasper's development we will finally have real center depth next season when Copp returns. If Kasper can lock down that 2C spot and you slot Copp down to 3C that makes a world of difference compared to where we were before Copp was signed.

He really isn't that important if at all. He was here for the honeymoon period and then he got hurt after that ended. Our record would be the same or close to it with or without him. We lost plenty of games down last year's stretch with him in the lineup. He moves the needle in almost no way.

Thank you. He is decent defensively and that's about it. Don't count on him to help like whatsoever on the box score.

By like, 2027 when he resigns as a depth forward, we are going to have Larkin, Kasper, and Danielson all in the lineup and hold pivot roles. For the 4th line, we could see a number of guys rotating in and out in that final position along with Copp, but I imagine he'll be sliding over to the wing by then with some spot filling here and there with Savage/James/etc. guys like that

The goaltending has definitely nosedived during this stretch. But I just think the team in general gassed ourselves to make up for the terrible start under Lalonde. And now we dont have anything left in the tank.

I don't really consider Copp a game breaker if that is what this thread is for. It's just that where the wings are at now you can't afford to lose a single player that has competency in their position. Copp may be overpaid and not star level but he checks the box for the posiiton, with him gone we also have to scramble to backfill replaceing the position with someone who was holding down the fort somewhere else. So he either creates a hole that he left or you create a hole somewhere else to fill that hole.

Because the wings have no talent to back up a loss a loss becomes a double loss. Its more about that than Copp's contribution as an individual. As a thought exercise it's the deference between losing Legwand when Legwand was here, or losing Legwand if Legwand were here on this team right now. Huge difference.
