The question is will the front office and coaching staff put Wilson in a position to succeed or fail? So far it is a fail from top to bottom, but what do I know. Hope they prove me wrong.
to succeed? two games in and every NFL pundit wants to think the kid is toast now?

Zac Wilson is not toast but this is about the organization which is not setting up their new young QB for success.
Really, it’s a tale of two organizations who have a long history of losing with a few bright spots in between.

New ownership for the Isles hires the best GM out there who is given complete control and who hires the best coach available (both hall of gamers or potential hall of famers in their profession) and the results are immediate, the future looks bright and the team is competing for a Stanley Cup.

Ownership for the Jets who we are continually supposed to believe will get it right this time hires a relatively unknown Director of Player Development Joe Douglas as GM who was of all things interviewed by their head coach at the time.

Let’s talk about Adam Gase who was highly regarded and touted as a great offensive mind as a coordinator but had a losing record in Miami after drafting a promising young QB. That QB is shipped out of Miami along with Gase and that QB is now competing for conference championships.

So Joe Douglas is hired by the Jets and things continue to fall off the rails, despite drafting a promising young QB. Sam Darnold’s career gets off to a slow start due to injuries, lack of protection and Douglas opts to trade him in favor of drafting a new promising QB. Gase is also fired and a highly regarded defensive coordinator is brought in to coach the team.

Since Douglas has joined the organization he has opted to rebuild. He has a huge budget as all high price contracts are shipped out and he has a plethora of draft picks. His first draft class appears to be off to a very bad start beset by injuries and not fitting in. His 2020 first round pick is promising offensive lineman Mekhi Becton who is injured, has a bad training camp, is called out by his coach, and gets badly injured in Game 1. Their second round pick in 2020 is a promising WR Denzel Mims who cannot find his way to the field with the new coaching staff for unknown reasons. Both 3rd round picks are injured or cut. Not a promising look for Douglas.

The Jets are playing the most rookies in the NFL this season and the results are on par with that. The problem is the young QB is under fire, thrown to the wolves with aggressive play calling and very limited protection, already is dealing with a minor groin injury, has been sacked 10 times and has a QBR or 23. I put that on Saleh.

Meanwhile, Darnold is 3-0 in this early season, is the #2 ranked QB in the NFL and seems to be back on track in his development. Their arch rivals by the way finally are brought down a notch losing the GOAT QB but draft a promising QB later in the first round. Their QB has protection, a conservative offensive game plan where he is not expected to carry the load yet and seems to be on track to be a winner.

Will the the Jets turn it around? As a long time Jets fan who used to go to games at Shea Stadium and has seen it all, I can say agree it is early, but confidence is very low right now because this ownership has repeatedly not shown the ability to bring in winners so I do not trust Douglas nor Saleh to be any different.

Great post. As a long suffering Jets' fan, you're regrettably right on point.

What credibility do these guys have to play hardball with both of their top 2 picks from 2 years ago? Their biggest failure as you correctly pointed out lies in the lack of investment in the OL and in play calling.

It's a sad and telling comment that I was happy to see the Seahawks lose their game last week knowing the Jets have their first round pick.

You can say Douglas is a poor talent evaluator (which could lead to his demise and is ultimately the mark of a true great GM) but you cannot say that he did not invest around Zach Wilson.

Did he f*** Sam Darnold in that department? Yes, of course.

But he has tried a different approach for ZW. He traded up for 1st round guard, he got Morgan Moses, signed Dan Feeney for depth, got Corey Davis, drafted Elijah Moore, drafted a pass catching back in Michael Carter.

I'm also in the "throw the guy to the wolves because if he is THE guy, he will show it" camp, but Douglas definitely screwed ZW by not adding a veteran QB as his backup and mentor. That is inexplicable.

Here's the problem when you're comparing wilson to darnold. at the very least, wilson is on a team that is young and can grow. he will have these struggles and nobody should be surprised this is happening, but he isn't screwed. The staff trusts him and this is a better position than 2018 and most of the other bad jets squads. I get that it is very "bad" in the first few weeks of a season, but I believe they will be fine. I know the niners way of defense and even offense is pretty good. If they can convert this team into the niners east (minus injuries), then i'm all for it.

As for Darnold? I want him to do well but there are issues he still has in his game. The kid will at best be a game manager and be okay. I still think his ceiling is game manager Alex Smith, while Wilson absolutely can be a franchise QB. And if you think Mac jones will become a good player overnight, please stop. I get that he is a good enough short passer but the fact the patriots didn't even score 30 after the jets gave them 4 INT's is kinda bad.

I will add Mac Jones is also a game manager and very smart and their organization recognized that and are running the offense playing to his strengths. The Jets had a game manager in Darnold and hung him out to dry. That is on Gase.

I have always viewed building football teams by starting with controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Start with the running game, stopping the run and pressuring the QB.

There was some semblance of a running game last week which did not exist week 1. Start with that and give this kid Wilson a chance to succeed and do NOT put the onus on him to carry the offense.

Saleh and Lafleur hopefully learned their lesson and recognize that this kid should not be expected to carry this team this early on.

I think they will understand that because the jets goal should be growing up and learning. I know they might not beat denver but if they can? that's very good growth. even if they lose but keep it close, that's what i wanna see. I wanna see if they're gonna grow as a team and understand they'll become a better team as time progresses

Sounds like Wilson at least is being told to dial it back. He is not in college and not the best player on the field right now and needs to make better decisions instead of putting the ball up for grabs like a Brett Fabre which is probably a good comparison of his playing style.

I still don't think Darnold will be a good quarterback, two of his wins have been against the Jets and Houston with a third string quarterback. I'm sticking to my "not bright enough" criticism to be a top tier QB. BTW he's killing R Anderson statistically. Anderson was held back during Sam's Jets stint, got away from Sam for a year and had 95 catches, and now has only five catches in three games.

Carolina, until last week anyway, was a dream destination for any QB. I'm confident Wilson would be
3-0 there too.

well lets see how good he does against the broncos. i think the panthers defense was a brutal first way to get thrown into the NFL, so it's a good test. Von miller isn't the same btw and the biggest threat is still Surtain

Darnold is a solid QB. i just think that his issue is still fumbles and some awareness as a QB. Carolina is still a great place for him

what did you expect? them to become a great team overnight? they're playing so many rookies that it's not gonna be easy.
After every game you post about “growth” and that we shouldn’t expect them to win. Where is the growth? They look absolutely incompetent in every aspect of the game. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a taunting penalty called on a punt play by the punting team. I didn’t expect them to win I expect them to not look completely clueless week after week.

The Giants screwed up when they picked a RB at #3 when they have a lot of other needs.

The Jets are just the f***ing Jets. Hurts to watch.

Justin Tucker is the best kicker of all time
I agree. As a Ravens fan, I'm biased, but his stats are pretty impressive.

He's 90.57%, tops all-time. He's 98.1% on kicks under 40yds. He's clutch - nailing 50 straight 4th quarter kicks, including 16 for 16 in the last minute of a game.

Dude's been money.
