The fact the Jets have the highest point percentage in the Central while having no players that are PPG is scary

Just curious, with this absurd rambling,

So you’re not going to respond? Coward.

what your thoughts were on the Jets' win tonight over the Rangers. Road game, Scheifele gets a hat trick, multiple points from new guys, Connor hits 30 goals. Would love to hear you spin that one into something bad, I'm sure you've been cooking up something. Oh wait, I forgot, you don't want to talk about the games where the Jets win against good teams

I was certainly rooting for the Jets in that game, for obvious reasons.

I’m not going to pretend I watched the whole 60 minutes, but I caught the late stages and it’s the same template they’ve followed all season. Get an ugly goal, take advantage of a defensive gaffe, pick one up on the PP. When your goalie puts up a .950 to the other guy’s .885 despite being massively outshot, that’s enough for a road win. It’s the playbook for a team that has a Hart contender in net.

Probably doesn’t help that the Jets’ PP has been immobile, steaming garbage for a good chunk of the season, and has only recently gained some momentum with the additions of Monahan and Toffoli.

Do they have superstar power? No. But depth scoring never hurts when coupled with solid D and Vezibuyck.

I don't know how did the Kings win 2 cups with a terrible offense?

I remember earlier in the season when you said the jets were a shitty team.
How does it feel to be so wrong?
The Kings didn't have a terrible offense when they won the cups. It was also a different league 10 years ago. Scoring is way up now.

Wait for the playoffs and we'll see if I'm wrong

My man, this is the point where you should stop digging.

You’re right that I misspoke, intending to say they had only won 2 games against playoff teams this month, rather than played.

In your rush to call that out, you just demonstrated that they did indeed play 2 other games against playoff teams — in which they lost, badly, and showed zero offensive pulse.

I suspect you didn’t really want to talk about that, but here we are.

The Jets played against Nashville, a lower-end playoff team who’s barely on the right side of the bubble. In that game, Nashville was up 4-0 with seven minutes remaining. That brought the total goals to 0-9 in the games you just chose to highlight as proof that they’re going to be a playoff threat. The Jets tacked on two garbage-time goals, including a PPG with 11 seconds left, to save face on paper. That’s the offensive surge we’re talking about? Or was it the 6 against Columbus? The 6 against Anaheim?

Do I need to mention that in the current standings, their first round opponent would be the same Nashville team that ran them out of the building? Is that something you meant to highlight as well?

I’ll accept the correction you made, but the conclusion that must naturally be drawn from it is exactly the point I was making.
To be fair Nashville deserves some respect. I think I read they're Top 3 team in points % since November if I'm not mistaken.

They're a damn good team this year.

Dallas is 2nd in GF and doesn't have a player that's PPG. That's scarier.

It really is something, isn't it?

If Jake Oettinger was playing anywhere close to the level Connor Hellebuyck is at this season, Dallas might've already had the Central division wrapped up.

That said, I still think the division is Colorado's to lose.

Also, the fact that the NHL's ridiculous seeding system means one of these three teams is guaranteed to be out after the first round, is an absolute joke.

Getting stomped by Dallas (and missing out on that U2 concert) seems to have been the catalyst for them I think. They've been on a tear ever since.

So ignore winnipeg controlling all 5v5 play allowing only 3 high danger chances. Discrediting every jets goal for hockey reasons and ignore rangers only scoring with an extra attacker. That adds up lol

Don't let the shots on goal fool you the jets punked them 5on5 till the rangers pulled the goalie and the shots got out of hand in the last 3 minutes 6on5. Good thing your not pretending you watched the whole game.

The Rick Bowness effect. Such an underrated coach.
More importanly...he has the unconditional backing of his GM. That is the key after Bowness told the truth after the Las Vagas series...alot of GM's would have listened to a couple of pouty players who had their feelings hurt. Cheveldayoff chose to listen to his coach and got to work getting a fantastic return for Dubois and cut Wheeler loose + signed the Jets cornerstone players to long term deals.

Bowness is criminally underrated, so is Cheveldayoff!

You're not lying, you definitely didn't watch the whole 60.

The Kings absolutely did have terrible offense when they won the cups. Ignoring total goals and whether they had any PPG players (they didn't) as I agree, scoring is up now, if you compare to the rest of the league those years.....in 2012, measuring offense by the number of goals the team scored, they were 29th out of the 30 team league. In 2014, they were somewhat better, but still pretty bad...24th out of 30.

They've certainly got some nice scoring depth now. But they're a pretty slow team up front. Toffoli, Vilardi, Monahan, Neids, Lowry, Scheifele etc aren't the fastest guys.

That said, they have a dynamic young game breaker they can call up for the playoffs, which could really make them scary. Brad Lambert is lighting up the AHL and could be a real difference maker for them in a best of 7.

I didn't realize they were ranked quite that low in team goal standings, I misremembered that one.

There were hardly any PPG players back then, barely clearing 100 points was all it took for an Art Ross.

But I just don't see the similarities between the cup winning Kings and this year's Jets. In 2012 they had two centers playing at a damn near Selke level (Kopitar and Richards), and in 2014 they had two recent 40 goal scorers (Carter and Gaborik) in an era where 40 goals was a lot.

If you breakdown the rosters by position, the Kings player is better than the Jets player almost every single time. Kopitar>Scheifele, Richards (2012)/Carter (2014)>Monahan, Doughty>Morrissey, Voynov>Pionk, I could keep going down the lineup... The only ones that're relatively even are Conner vs Carter (2012)/Gabroik (2014) and Hellebuyck vs Quick.

Three things that always surprise me....

1) Depth is underrated.
2) Defense is underrated.
3) Goaltending is underrated.

It's almost like we think teams will win a Stanley Cup because they have 3 or 4 amazing top end players. We forget that hockey is a team sport, and no matter how many pajama boys or nostrils you have, you aren't getting past a well constructed TEAM, if the rest of your guys are shite.

The thing is, you need both depth and top end players. The Jets have proven they have the depth. But their top end pieces are all well below Colorado, Vegas, Dallas, Vancouver, and Edmonton. The first 3 all have just as good depth too

Nashville may be a "lower-end playoff team who's barely on the right side of the bubble", but when the Jets played them, they were 8-0-2 in their last 10. They weren't playing like it.

They scored 5 vs the Canes this month. They aren't the Jets defensively, but they don't give up 5 very often.

But the Kings absolutely exploded offensively in both of those playoffs. It’s not just that they scored more than their regular season selves (when the opposite is usually the case), they were flat-out better offensively than nearly any other team in the bracket those seasons. Look at their 2014 scoring vs the other Cup finalist… the Kings scored a full goal per game more than the Rangers that spring.

The thesis in the OP is that the Jets are primed to do the same. I’m not buying that. They have good players, but so do all the other playoff teams. Injuries notwithstanding, they’ve already been getting typical-or-better production from their core offensive players. Their best player is their goalie. They’re coached by one of the very last guys you would expect to lead an offensive renaissance, least of all in the playoffs. Of all the teams, why would this be the one that should suddenly have a Kings-style offensive breakout?
They added 2 - 30 goal scorers at the deadline.
