  • Tyler Gaffalione had a 3-win day.
  • Jose Ortiz served a one-day suspension for improper usage of the whip under new HISA rules implemented July 1. He has lost with his last 33 mounts.
  • Race 8: Isolate (Tyler Gaffalione/Tom Amoss) won the $135,000 Tale of the Cat Stakes in a driving victory by six lengths. The win gave the trainer his 4,000th lifetime victory.

CHURCHILL DOWNS | Saturday, August 13

1660080294125.png

A reminder that Churchill Downs (KY) will conduct a one-day meet to honor the racing once held at Arlington Park (IL). Churchill owned the historic track but sold the land in what remains an infuriating decision.

Ellis Park (KY) will not race Saturday.

For horse racing interests, this is Saturday's card and yes the Arlington Million will be run in Kentucky.:

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $17.5 million. Roughly $448 million handled through 21 (of 40) dates.
  • Race 8: Len Lo Lady (Junior Alvarado/Dale Romans) won by more than four lengths at 10-to-1. It was the jockey's only ride of the day. It was the usually Midwest-based trainer's first win at the Spa in almost two years. The horse entered off a 27 1/2 length loss 17 months ago. Good training job there.

  • Race 5: Top Envoy (Javier Castellano/Leah Gyarmati) was the lone first-time starter -- a perpetual favorite betting angle -- and won at 34-to-1.
  • Jose Ortiz ended an inexplicable 36-race losing streak. He changed agents earlier this month perhaps as a sign of frustration.
  • Manny Franco-Chad Brown has been a hot trend in recent weeks.
  • Javier Castellano is riding like a younger version of himself.
Del Mar (California):
  • Tyler Baze was off his mounts for an unexplained absence.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Daisuke Fukumoto won his first three mounts.

More info about what is transpiring at Saratoga...

The on-track betting total for 20 days is $72,999,891, up from $67,917,739 in 2021, a 7.5% increase.

Export numbers for 2022 are $357,888,922 for an all-source total of $430,888,813 (average daily handle $21,544,441). In 2021, those numbers were $333,650,730 for an all-source total of $401,568,468 (average daily handle of $20,078,423).

Export numbers, all-sources, and average daily handle are all up 7.3% this summer.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Exceeded $23 million. Roughly $453 million wagered through 21 (of 40) racing dates.
  • Race 10: Theodora Grace (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Bob Klesaris) won by a head at 13-to-1 but more importantly gave a lucky bettor a winning $575,000+ ticket on the $1 Pick 6. The jockey is universally known. The New England-born trainer has been active for roughly 50 years and won his first race at the now shuttered Green Mountain Race Track (Vermont) with a horse named Icandoit.

  • Race 8: Bankit (Joel Rosario/Steve Asmussen) won the $125,000 Evan Shipman Handicap. The 6-year-old New York-bred won for the seventh time in 24 starts and has earned over $1.1 million. Asmussen is 26 8-2-2 (31%) this meet which is impressive. The winningest trainer in North America history, he is 136 wins shy of 10,000 victories.

  • Race 3: Wudda You Think Now (Trevor McCarhty/Rudy Rodriguez) gave the ice-cold trainer his first win at the meet with his 47th starter.
  • Jose Lezcano rode a hat trick and won three consecutive starts aboard five mounts total. He entered today with just five wins all meet.
  • Dylan Davis will serve a suspension lasting seven racing days from August 18-25 for a riding infraction from earlier in the week.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Miguel Vasquez, who is running away with the meet title for wins by a jockey, won four times.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Race 2: Uncle Nick (Jonuelle Pena/Carlo Vaccarezza) gave the jockey his first win with his sixth try.
Del Mar (California):
  • Tyler Baze was fined $1,000 for failure to report Thursday on his mounts. Following a meeting with stewards today, he asked to take the weekend off, through Sunday, to attend to personal matters. Not much other info released but stewards said it was Baze's call when he returns. He will meet with them again prior to re-instatement. The 39-year-old jockey is riding at a feeble 3% this meet and that in itself can take a toll.

Gulfstream is promoting an estimated $2 million jackpot today in their Pick 6. Be the only winner of the last six races and the pot is yours. This time of year, Gulf doesn't get the attention on the national stage and with betting interests in Churchill, Saratoga and later Del Mar, among others today, it is a good opportunity for Gulf to increase handle.

Travers Day at Saratoga... Judging by what is ongoing there this meet and with weather being nearly flawless, if that continues, we could see close to $60 million bet that Saturday August 27. The anticipation for this meet exceeded even the typical buzz.

  • Jamie Ness won three races including a pair at Delaware and Laurel mere seconds apart. He is the 19th winningest trainer in North America annals.
  • Steve Asmussen is 136 wins shy of 10,000.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Neared $30,000,000.
  • Flavien Prat rode winners with his first three mounts.
  • Race 10: Casa Creed (Luis Saez/Bill Mott) won the Grade I $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap at 4-to-1. The winning connections received an invite to the Breeders' Cup as this was part of the "Win and You're In" Series.

  • Race 9: Expressman (Javier Castellano/Todd Pletcher) and Unlimitedpotential (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) formed an entry that finished 1-2 for the Pletcher barn. The horses together were over $1 million in purchase price. The winner won by 7 1/4 lengths.

  • Race 7: Bourbon Bash (Flavien Prat/Wayne Lukas), the winner by eight lengths, was the only horse to have started a race. Lukas will be 87 years of age next month.

  • Race 5: Vallelujah (Jazqueline Davis/Robbie Davis) won at 24-to-1. The Davis family is deep with three children jockeys and a fourth a trainer in addition to the father who trains and was a former rider. This was a rare time one of the daughters won for the father. he $.50 Pick 5 paid over $48,000.

  • Race 4: Damon's Mound (Gabriel Saez/Michelle Lovelle) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Saratoga Special. The winners are based part of the time in Kentucky and for the trainer, who summers in Virginia, this was the first time she saddled a horse in New York. The Florida-bred is owned by a couple from Texas. quite the road trip in those sentences.

  • Race 2: Moma (Flavien Prat/Todd Pletcher) won the $105,000 MSW in her debut at 9-to-1. Alain and Gérard Wertheimer own. They have a little gig as owners of the House of Chanel in Paris, too.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 3: Imagine the Mojo (Paco Lopez/Jose Delgado) and Expect to Be Ready (Luis Rodriguez Castro/Tony Wilson) dead-heat for win.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Handle: $3.2 million, a good take.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $7.9 million.
  • Race 11: More than $1,2 million was added to the Pick 6 to total near $1.6 million. Each of the 18 winning ticket holders walked off with $72,000+:
Race 6: Small Reason $19.40
Race 7: Tigre $19.20
Race 8: Ghostinyou $7.80
Race 9: Celestial Graze $17.80
Race 10: Pudding $5.40
Race 11: Frenchmen Street $12.40

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Handle: Not revealed since CD doesn't input similarly to other tracks.
  • Card, Part 1: A special one-day of racing to remember Arlington Million Day that was such an important fabric of the horse racing community in Illinois and was a popular race across the industry. Churchill Downs closed the Arlington Racecourse in 2021 and sold the property.
  • Card, Part 2: All 11 held purses in excess of $100,000.
  • Brian Hernandez. Jr. rode the card and finished 11 3-1-2.
  • Race 5: Dalika (Brian Hernandez. Jr./Albert Stall, Jr.) was sent off at 7-to-1, the longest odds on the board, fought back and won the $500,000 Grade I Beverly D. Stakes in record-setting time for a 1 1/8 mile race on the turf at CD at 1:46.31. Dalika, a 6-year-old mare bred in Germany, will head to the Breeders' Cup as this was part of the "Win and You're In" Series.

  • Race 7: Bell's the One (Corey Lanerie/Neil Pessin) has now earned over $1.7 million with 26 starts after winning the Lady Tak Stakes.

  • Race 11: Santin (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) won the $1,000,000 Grade I Arlington Million. The trainer and jockey won this prestigious race for the first time. Santin, a 4-year-old son to Distorted Humor, entered the millionaire zone ($1.4 million) after his eighth start.

Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Handle: $2 million+.
  • McLean Robertson, one of Minnesota's most successful trainers in recent years, won three of five races he entered.
  • Race 8: Love The Nest (Ry Eikleberry/Joel Berndt) was sent off the favorite and won the $100,000 Minnesota Derby.
  • Race 9: It's Her Time (Constantino Roman/McLean Robertson) won the $100,000 Minnesota Oaks by more than three lengths and at 8-to-1

Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $21 million.
  • Mark Glatt trained three winners.
  • Umberto Rispoli rode three winners on turf. He is a magician on the grass courses in southern Cal.
  • Joe Bravo won the opener and finale.
  • Race 9: Vegas Magic (Abel Cedillo/Doug O'Neill), the second largest odds at 14-to-1 and longest of the trainer's three entered, won the Grade 2 $200,000 Sorrento Stakes.

  • Race 7: Cave Rock (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the $106,000 MSW. Cave Rock, a $550,000 to the brilliant Arrogate, won his maiden race by eight lengths the 6 1/2 furlongs MSW in 1:15.81. He received a 101 Beyer score.

The jockey won a stakes at Woodbine for the first time. This is unofficially the first graded stakes win for the trainer who is 2-for-38 in 2022 and whom has been training since the 1980s..

  • Steve Asmussen ended the day 135 wins shy of 10,000 in his career. He will need about seven wins a week to reach the feat this year.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Over $22 million. Saratoga has unofficially exceeded $500,000,000 so far and the track is en route to a record-setting meet. To quote Rufus "Tell Me Something Good" and that is it! Not much in any sport can beat an experience at the Spa.
  • Todd Pletcher trained two winners in $105,000 Maiden Special Weight (MSW) races.
  • Race 9: Big Invasion (Joel Rosario/Christophe Clement) opened at the lowest odds possible -- 1-to-9 -- and won the $150,000 Mahony Stakes in expected style. He is now a remarkable 7 6-1-0 with six straight wins including five stakes.

  • Race 8: Betsy Blue (Jose Lezcano/Linda Rice) improved to 16 7-7-1 after a win in an AOC race, a condition in which she finished second in her past three starts. She has failed to hit the board just once in 16 starts. It could be time for a bigger race. Brattle House (Javier Castellano/Bill Mott) placed. She was purchased in 2019 by Boston-based OXO Equine for $775,000 which is the highest ever paid for a New York bred yearling,
  • Race 6: Chocolate Gelato (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) wired the field and romped home by more than 8 lengths to win the $105,000 MSW. That shows where the sport is currently -- $100,000+ maiden special weight races are routine at popular track like here. Chocolate Gelato was purchased for $475,000 by Mike Repole who once famously sold his beverage company to Coca-Cola for over $4 billion.

  • Race 1: Tyler Gaffalione, who rode the winner in the Arlington Million in Kentucky (that still doesn't sound proper) yesterday, won the opener today in New York.
  • Jose Lezcano-Linda Rice teamed twice and both times came back winners. The jockey has won five of his past 10 rides.
  • John Velazquez was off his mounts due to soreness from a spill at Churchill Downs on Saturday. He is expected to ride Wednesday.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Saffie Joseph trained three winners. He is the leading trainer at the meet.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Meet: The meet, which began June 3, ends August 21.
  • Jockey Race: Jevian Toledo (30 wins) and Horacio Karamanos (28 wins) are neck-and-neck atop the standings.
  • Trainer Race: Claudio Gonzalez, aka Mr. Maryland (18 wins) is tied with Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon with 18 wins apiece. Dale Capuano is not far behind with 16 victories.
Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • Card: As one pundit put it, one of the best cards in the history of the track. The track is celebrating its 100th year.
  • Race 9: Steal Sunshine (Edgar Morales/Bobby Dibona) saved his best for last to win the $200,000 Ellis Park Derby. The winning connections are south Florida based. Dibona is a New Englander who made his bones in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Not too many $200,000 purses at those now shuttered places; this was one of the biggest wins of his 20-year career.

  • Race 8: Li'l Tootsie (Edgar Morales/Thomas Amoss) won the $125,000 Groupie Doll Stakes.
  • Reylu Gutierrez and Gerardo Corrales both rode two winners. Brad Cox trained two winners.
  • Leonel Reyes, who won twice at Gulfstream yesterday and someone I mentioned a few times in these threads as overlooked and underrated in south Florida, rode a 23-to-1 shot to third and won the feature race at 5-to-1.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $19 million.
  • Juan Hernandez finished a 4-win day 6 4-1-0. The past two days, he went 15 8-4-0 and extend that to 20 10-4-0 the past three days.
  • Race 7:
  • Race 9: Havnameltdown (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert), a $200,000 Florida-bred 2-year-old son to Uncaptured, improved to 2 2-0-0 following a win in the $200,000 Grade 3 Best Pal Stakes. Baffert has won this race a record nine times including with Lookin At Lucky in 2009.

Emerald Downs (Washington):
  • Card: Signature card.
  • Handle: $3.2 million.

  • Race 5: Tiz a Macho Girl (Jake Samuels/Jeffrey Metz) won the $75,000 Washington Oaks at 21-to-1 in easy fashion.
  • Race 6: Zippin Sevenz (Alex Cruz/Alan Bozell) wired the field in the $75,000 Emerald Distaff Stakes at 23-to-1. The $1 double was an enormous $429.70.
  • Race 7: You're the Cause (Javier Matias/Debbie Van Horne) won the $75,000 Muckleshoot Derby at the staggering odds of 56-to-1, the highest odds in the field of eleven. The win payout is the second largest in track history for a graded stakes. Van Horne has been active for over 40 years. Midnight Mojo (Herbert Martinez/Tom Wenzel) finished second at 11-to-1. The $1 exacta was $924.30 which has to be a top five in North America this year. This was such a difficult Pick 3, that is paid out to winners of two legs. The $,50 Pick 4 was over $29,000. The $1 daily double -- amongst the highest I have seen in years -- paid a track record $3,268.90.

  • Race 8: Slew's Tiz Whiz (Jose Zunino)/Tom Wenzel) won the 87edition of the $150,000 Longacres Mile at 3-to-1. Slez's Tiz Whiz, one of six in the field of 12 bred in Washington, was a former claiming horse. Quite the rebound! The $.50 Pick 4 was a gigantic $67,000+.
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $3,400.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $5.7 million.
  • Sahin Civaci, who hails from Turkey, won three times and finished an exceptional day 4 3-1-0.
  • Slade Jones, a 16-year-old jockey from Barbados, won twice.
  • Race 9: Sister Seagull (Antonio Gallardo/Catherine Day Phillips) won the $250,000 Bison City Stakes in a close finish,

  • Race 8: War Bomber (Sahin Civaci/Norm McKnight) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Seagram Cup. This was the 58th international graded stakes winner for sire War Front.

What is ongoing in Washington state right now is something nearly unthinkable. Those past three races...

And now confirmed the daily double is the biggest in track history.

Del Mar's numbers continue to match much of the industry trend in that handle is threatening existing records. Through 14 of 31 days (ends September 11), the total is up 7% this year compared to 2021. The all-time record of $608.9 million was set in 2005 and could be snapped this year. September 3 will be the telltale date as the San Diego area will be hopping with a massive card. Field size has been an important reason for the boom in handle.

Last week's sale at Saratoga set record purchase prices. Yesterday and today, sales at Saratoga are limited to New York bred yearlings. While prices won't compare to last week, we are already seeing an active interest compared to this sale from 2021 when $6.4 million was dropped. Close to $7 million was spent yesterday including the highest price ever paid for a New York yearling colt at this sale: $600,000 for a Hard Spun baby. The highest filly purchased yesterday was $370,000 for a Good Magic daughter.

A look ahead through Labor Day weekend with graded stakes and potential runners.

Secret Oath vs. Nest in the Alabama is a potential highlight this weekend.

Colonial Downs (VA) is one of the great resurrection stories in any sport. Nearly sold to non-racing interests after closing in 2013, it re-surfaced in 2019 to much fanfare. Churchill Downs bought the track and related properties for $2.5 billion earlier this year with the sale process ongoing.

Colonial Downs reported today that five weeks through the 27-day meet handle is up 30.7% compared to 2021. The track generally runs Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays and yet still pulls in an average handle of $2.6 million. The track serves as a source for others in the area including when Maryland is dark.

Good things happening in Virginia.

Monmouth Park (NJ):
  • Card: Monmouth is racing Mondays to team with Colonial Downs (VA) with a Mid-Atlantic Pick 4. This will be a thing until September 5.
  • Handle: $2.3 million.
  • Race 8: Triple Elvis (Hector Diaz, Jr./Chad Brown), a $700,000 son to Into Mischief owned by the renowned Peter Brant, finally broke his maiden in his fifth try. He was 0-fpr-4 at NYRA tracks.

The 2-day New York-bred yearlings sale has completed with more than $20 million spent -- an all-time record -- on yearlings foaled in the state. Last year, more than $18 million was spent and that mark was the previous high.

We will never know the true gift of Arrogate as a sire as his life was cut short. His first-timers aren't exceptionally successful but otherwise they strengthen and he has shown a prodigious ability with such offspring. Today's sale produced a high of $700,000 for an Arrogate colt out of Georgie's Angel.

Who else is a baby to Arrogate and Georgie's Angel? None other than Cave Rock who debuted magnificently on Saturday at Del Mar.

The $700,000 is the highest paid for a New York-bred yearling in the history of this sale. It surpassed the $600,000 spent yesterday on a Hard Spun colt.

While I don't follow the sales in France as closely as those here in the US, a 3-day sale there concluded with a record-setting money-equivalent of more than $51,600,000 spent including the top-seller of $2,000,000+ by Godolphin, the outfit that is amongst the biggest in the world. The top-seller is a colt by Irish-bred Dubawi, a leading sire in Europe.

Joel Rosario, defending Outstanding Jockey of the Year in North America, has been performing marvelously on the big stage at Saratoga. Whether he repeats his Eclipse Award is still a guess, but he should certainly be one of the three finalists. Irad Ortiz, Jr. will likely get another nominee. Then it comes down to Flavien Prat (3rd in money earned), Luis Saez (third in wins among riders at major circuits) and perhaps Jose Ortiz (changing agents doesn't help his cause) or Tyler Gaffalione (2nd in wins). Manny Franco (riding lights out for Chad Brown) being the longest shot to make the cut. Florent Geroux could be considered, too, but small win total could hurt his standing by comparison to those listed.

York (England):
  • Race 4: Baaeed (Jim Crowley/William Haggas) improved to a perfect 10 10-0-0 after winning the Group I $1.35 million Juddmonte International which is a Breeders Cup "Win and You're In" race. Baaeed is considered by many to be the best current racehorse in the world.

UPDATE:

Thursday's race served as a "Win and You're In" Breeder's Cup Challenge race, providing automatic berth in the Longines Breeders Cup Classic (G1) Nov. 5 at Keeneland. He is not intended for that race, however.
Baaeed will retire after the Qipco Champion Stakes (G1) at Ascot in October, rather than step up to a mile and a half in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1).
"He can't do both, it's too close, and we wanted our finale in the Champion Stakes, that's always been the plan," Haggas said.
"I never had any desire to run in the Arc, and unless Sheikha Hissa and Angus Gold decide that we're going to do that and miss Ascot, as far as I'm concerned he'll be going for the Champion Stakes."
Nor is there any likelihood of retirement being put on hold, as Haggas added: "He mustn't race on, he needs to go and earn some money and enjoy a fruitful career."
