Well that's disappointing.

I don't disagree with Waddell that Elvis has the talent to be a #1 goalie. He might get back there. I just think it's a waste of organizational energy to get him there, including that it is a drag on our locker room. We should just buy him out and put someone in net that the players are excited to play for.

I would assume if any mention of toxicity comes up in meeting with the players, he may reconsider this idea. That being said,
He might be the guy who rekindles the fire in Elvis. It only takes an encounter with the right person.
this is also a possibility, albeit a more unlikely one.

I hate the Steelers but I respect Mike Tomlin as a coach. Reminds me of this quote from him in an interview.

"I love coaches who resist the responsibility of coaching, that talk negatively about a dude that can't learn."

"Man...if everyone could learn, we'd need less coaches. If the group didn't need management, then we wouldn't make as much.

"I don't run away from coaching. I run to coaching."

"It's all in line with not seeking comfort, because when you are a coach and you're talking about someone that can't learn, you're seeking comfort because your teaching is struggling."

Looks like we're stuck with him for another season. Hopefully a tightening of the defense will help him regain his mojo.

Aint much out there so hopefully someone hits the right buttons to reset this guy. Skills are there, mental aspect needs reboot.

Well, the first step is having a GM that didn't emote him to 3rd string when he was the best playing goalie on the roster. Then it all fell apart. He had a pretty decent start to last season all things considered while the defense was still a mess. I guess we'll see where those conversations go.

I thought I just heard the Preds GM say they are resigning Saros???
Both can be true.

Preds are open to moving him but the price is high, as it should be for elite goalie. At the same time, they'll want to re-sign him so they don't lose such a valuable piece for nothing.

I think this is the most realistic path for Elvis.

No one-yes, no one-will want him even with retention at this point. If he improves and behaves then there is a smidgeon of hope that he can be moved without having to take garbage back.

If it doesn't work out next year, then it's time to cut bait. That is what I get from Waddell on Elvis.

It is possible to make changes to the team with an eye toward creating a better situation for Merzlikins to succeed while at the same time just be building a better team in general. Invest in Elvis' success and you invest in the team's success. Then, if it works, you figure out what to do with him long-term. If it doesn't work, you figure out what to do with him short-term.

The situation for Elvis to succeed is to extract his head out of his arse. He has the tools and yes the D wasn't good but he was hammered dog crap a good portion of the time.

Elvis played okay hockey for 3/4 of last year. It's how he relates to his teammates that I'm more concerned about.

I'm going to hope Waddell's statement is based on what he has learned from talking to all the players, and perhaps Elvis' issues in the room are overblown.

If it turns out that Elvis is a major part of the dysfunction in the room, then I'm pretty unhappy with Waddell's decision. Getting the room right is more important than saving a couple million in salary retention or buyout costs.

I still think the dysfunction is less about Elvis than most people think. He played OK hockey for 3/4 of the year. When it fell apart is when he was demoted to 3rd string even though he was the best playing goalie we had at the time. That was when the drama started. I think that was between him and the upper management (PV on up) and not about him and teammates. Those people have effectively been replaced so we'll see from there.

He also played in front of one of the worst defenses in the league. A lot could change once that defense tightens up and stops giving up high danger chances and forces majority of the shots from the perimeter.

I haven't checked back on the stats on this but for much of the year we were successfully keeping pucks to the outside. And Elvis underperformed what was expected in terms of xGAA (expected goals above average). I didn't think he was bad either, but my point is that the improvements we can expect from guarding the middle better have largely been factored in.
