Player Discussion: The Elvis Thread

the wennberg buyout is generally fine since he was under 26. in hindsight, he'd be kind of a perfect fit for this roster (as flawed as he is) as a pass-first, responsible center.

last one before that was, what, scott hartnell? also largely fine, although he did retire the following year.

an elvis buyout wouldn't be ideal – i don't think they'd actively pursue it – but it is an out if they think that he needs to go and find that the price to move him in a trade is too high. like if a team says "give us a first to take on elvis's deal" – there's a certain point where losing the first doesn't sting as much as the future cap space lost to the buyout, but neither option is ideal.

my main point is that, by keeping him around, they increase the likelihood that he either turns it around (and either sticks on the roster or becomes a positive trade asset), and regardless of whether or not he does, the buyout math eventually becomes less painful either way.
Oh I agree 100% I don't think they start considering it without him being abysmal for another year or two and even then I think they'd bury him first.

“Essentially”. Essentially gives me an out, no?? Semantics again. Unimportant.

Let’s think though, what was that “know more about hockey” comment a response to??

Oh that’s right, a comment about “Korpi’s agent”, a personal attack (that was parroted) referencing me. Why those are allowed, still not sure, jokes and humor right??

I warned people this would happen, and people doubled down thinking it wouldn’t. You guys sure can dish it out, but, can’t take it back.
Who can dish it out and who can’t take it? Since we’re not talking about everyone, but rather as subset with which you alone are familiar?

I think that's probably right. The one exception is if Elvis' acting out is considered a big problem in the room. But we don't get the intel for that sort of thing.

So here are the alternatives:

1)Keep him and hope he regains his form.

2)Trade him and take the least bad return offered.

3)Waive him and send him to Cleveland to see if he can regain form.(or hope some team claims him)
4)Buy him out.

Anyway you objectively look at this mess there are no real good alternatives.
He has a 10 team no trade list, they might have to pay to move him.

Only thing Elvis is dishing out are turnovers playing the puck :)

They might have to pay to move him regardless.

The 10 team list might be relevant, but I suspect Elvis would welcome a fresh start and wouldn't block. He seems to be pretty upset!

I really think his poor start plus his own fanbase lashing out and making threats against him and his family really f***ed him up mentally, especially for this season.

I just think the 10 team list plays a role because it might eliminate some teams that would normally be interested. For instance, a Canadian team might want him, but many NHL players have the Canadian teams on their NTL because of the impact on this financial situation.

Depending on the cost, I might prefer to just buy him out. Having to buy out another Jarmo contract is not a good trend though…

Blue Jackets' Elvis Merzlikins on struggles, verbal abuse: 'This is a new life challenge'

Off the ice, Merzlikins was shocked to learn that his wife, Aleksandra, and their young son, were allegedly subjected to verbal abuse and threats at Nationwide Arena. Aleksandra Merzlikins posted about it on Instagram in October, saying she no longer felt safe taking their son to games.

The Blue Jackets issued a statement saying they would investigate her concerns and allegations, which included a depiction of fans stating: “You, your kid and your husband should die,’ and ‘You and your husband are trash.’ ”

Real enough for his wife to quit coming to games. Which would f*** with anyone mentally.

That story went quiet pretty quick, eh??

Ok, and think about how ridiculous that is for her to legitimately feel threatened within Nationwide Arena….

It’s safe to say something was “lost in translation”, or…..

And the reason I don’t take many of you guys seriously is because you have expressed the idea that Elvis Merzlikins is a great goalie.

So we’re even.
Going to need receipts on people calling Elvis a great goalie. People have said he's better than Korpi, and he has been except for this season.

Here's the thing.
Her husband (Elvis) makes a lot of money to perform in front of a lot of people. Until recently they have been very public people. Simply means people knows who she is.
In todays sports world (sadly) the fans are out of control - from kids sporting events where mom/dad are trying to show up the coaches or umpires all the way up. So it doesn't shock me that some idiot would say somethign to her (does not make it right at all).
But to her if you are going to be a public person you have to be able to take it to some degree. It doesn't make it right at all but sadly that is where we are in todays society.
I use to sit in section 102 in my first couple years and the wives and girlfriends would sit over in upper part of 101, I have no idea where they are at now, but perhaps a better solution is the CBJ providing a box for them?

Man , this thread is getting hard to read. Going into this season , Korpisalo had a save % below 90, 4 out of last 5 years . Elvis had 3 seasons , and never below a 90% save %.… Elvis loves Columbus , and is happy here . There is nothing from Elvis that he wants a new start… what’s troubling to me, going back and reading the Elvis interview from December .. this really stands out to me ……

If this was one year ago, most likely I would find an excuse and I would blame Matiss’ death,” Merzlikins said, referring to fellow Latvian and Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks, who died on July 4, 2021, after a fireworks tragedy.

“But Lars helped me to let him go on the Fourth of July last summer, and I let him go. That’s not my issue.

Merzlikins quickly dispelled two other notions that have surrounded his struggles this season.

Many players feel pressure when they sign their first big NHL contract. Merzlikins signed a contract extension before last season, but he’s playing this season under the first year. His salary cap hit ($5.4 million) ranks him as the 12th-highest paid goalie in the league.

“I’m not even thinking about that; I really am not,” Merzlikins said. “I always hated the player who plays hockey for the money. Yes, it’s a business. Yes, this is my work. I need to make some money. But I play this game for love.

“I’ve always thought of it this way. You could offer me $20 million or a championship, and trust me, I’m going to win the championship. That’s the reason I’m playing hockey. There are a lot of haters out there, and cheers to them. One day I’m gonna have that ring”

Me.. reading the above… and I’m asking this question ………. surely the blue jackets had grief counselors that worked with the team and Elvis right ? Lars helped me to let him go the last 4th of July, and I let him go…

Did the “investigation” that the CBJ were supposedly doing of the verbal abuse ever find anything? The only thing I ever heard was about that jackass who yelled something about fireworks but that turned out to not even be a CBJ fan.

But you can see how it would mess with someone mentally if the love of their life doesn't feel safe coming to watch you at your own home?

Not necessarily at you but personally think the whole "you need to have thick skin if you want to be in the spotlight" thing is bullshit. These are still people with their own thoughts and feelings, and in this case people foreign to American culture and our abrasive ways. Just because he's good at hockey doesn't mean she needs to have thick skin and be able to take death threats from her husbands own team nonetheless. Maybe this whole situation has nothing to do with Elvis having a bad season, but it's easy to see how that would mess with someone knowing their significant other doesn't feel safe.

I don’t “need” anything. CBJ said they would investigate and based on what was said, I would expect some consequences, no?

I just don't know what they could do. If it wasnt said online and it was said in passing or something along those lines idk how they track it down.

Elvis is playing poorly.
He recognizes this.
He doesn't have an explanation for it (despite, and this is me extrapolating from what he said and not specifically using his direct words, going over and over in his mind what the reason could be). (I should add here that, just because he can't trace his poor play directly to any specific mental/emotional issue, doesn't mean it isn't connected to a specific mental/emotional issue.)
This lack of a clear answer for his struggles troubles him.

I don't know what's to be additionally worked up about this beyond being a fan of a team and having a player on that team play poorly, one from whom you expected better (and from whom you had better, previously).

The guy is slumping. Being he is the one the CBJ picked to be the guy, he should be given the chance to work through it. This year, and possibly next year, are good seasons to work it out. If the team makes a big jump next year, and he is still having issues, explore your options then. I really don't see a need to just wash your hands with him now when the team is still putting pieces together. Now, if he wants out, then I guess you try to move him, but it won't be easy.

People turned on Bob pretty quick when he bulked up and the groin issues started while the numbers went down for a couple years. Soon after, he won his 2nd Vezina.

You also have Jacob Markstrom at a .891 after a .922 last year. Carter Hart put up an .877 a couple years ago, probably good the team wasnt as weakminded and shortsighted as some fans.

I dont know if Elvis will rebound in the near future or at all. I also dont know if a change of scenery or a goalie coach change does the trick but hes probably sticking around for awhile. Hopefully he can mature and can his emotions in check because there is a good goalie in there, the team needs to find a way to get his head on straight and bring it out

Yeah, you never know how it is going to turn out. You look at how Korpisalo has rebounded and is putting up better numbers than the last couple of years. Had Columbus chose him to be the guy, it would be looking better because his game has improved.

It could be as easy as a coaching change. Like anything else, it's a crapshoot. If they make the change and it helps, great. But, they can always make the change and have things go south for all thier goalies.

Keeping his head was a problem that Korpi had dealt with just a few seasons ago. Remember the Philadelphia game he was having a fit after they came back on them. It earned him a couple games on the bench. He had that issue in Cleveland also. He has been able to work through it, and is a much calmer goalie now, so Elvis should be able to do it too.

Thanks for the multiple charts.

I'm still of the belief that the death of Kivlenieks is affecting him deeply. He may have claimed to be over it, but I suspect that he isn't.

No chance on a buyout this off season. In fact, he may have to have another awful year after next season before ownership will consider it. Because within two years they'll be paying off the remainder of Jarmo and JDs contacts;)
