Player Discussion: The Elvis Thread

A lot of people are posting on here still like he hasn't been improving at least the last handful of games, which he has. He was a big reason they beat the Leafs the other night. The team and he stunk in the first, but both played solid in the second and third. It seemed like a tough but good development/bonding road victory for the group.

Perhaps this belongs in a more general goalie thread, as this often turns into Korpi v. Elvis, but it is the Elvis Thread after all.

I pulled stats from Evolving Hockey in the post-Bobrovsky Era (and filtered out those seasons with under 10 games played). The right two columns are "goals saved above average" and "goals saved above expected." I'm sure if I pulled from other models their results may vary.

I found it interesting -> Elvis is getting worse in both of those stats each season. I'm also not sure how he's so far above average in his first two seasons but barely above "expected" in those same seasons. It's probably something with the models that I just don't understand yet.

Maybe advanced scouting is finding the areas he’s lacking and teams target it, for example, low blocker side?

korpi and tarasov playing relatively well this season probably refutes this, but the fact that elvis has gotten worse every year, coupled with how poorly korpi had played the last few years before this one, is the biggest reason why i think a change in goaltending coach should be considered before an actual goaltending change.

definitely possible. also seeing a lot of goals against where guys are targeting the far post. there was also a bad one last night where someone goaded him into moving laterally and his five hole opened right up.

in other words, his angles have been a huge mess all season.

Wasting years with absolutely terrible goalie is just so stupid. Goalie doesnt need to be star he needs to be over average. Elvis is Toskala with mental problems

We should really not be making major decisions on Elvis this season. There are very few goalies would look good with the defense and offense he has in front of him. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve some criticism, but wanting to buy him out based on this season is asinine.

Some some beauty’s to look back on before ya’ll turned on him
Hi. Thanks for quoting some posts of mine from god only knows when. Did you save them or have to go looking? Not sure if you noticed or not but I don’t post anymore. I barely keep up with what’s happening with the team to be perfectly honest. I stopped by just randomly today and saw your word vomit. But since you clearly haven’t noticed I haven’t “turned on anyone” because I haven’t been around. So if your plan was to put me in my place I mean nice try but next time pick someone who cares.

Anyway congratulations on being Lord and King of Hockey. Must feel great to know everything.

Good for him. And you do deserve a break Elvis!

I don't think Elvis has a mature approach to self-care. Every time he talks about his struggles there is a glimpse into what looks like a mountain of self-loathing (that or a messiah complex). Having a very negative belittling mother probably didn't help him.

Elvis, you're a good person and a good goalie, just having a hard time right now. Treat yourself well and we'll get through this.

Totally agree .. had all the makings of a bad mental health situation … really hope he has a support staff in place .. Our defense has been dramatically more structured, and I believe as you mentioned earlier , once they settled in to what this group could do well, the play in front of the goalie has been dramatically easier .. Elvis has such high drive to be great , he’s what you want in the locker room to push people to the next level, but at the same point being too amped up was affecting his positioning , trying to do too much was affecting his positioning .. he seems to have corrected that part , but the interview he gave shows he needs to now work on the mental side . Really hope he doesn’t look at it as a weakness , and gets the support in place . He's Loyal to our city , has embraced Columbus , and tried to really help grow the Blue jackets brand , and I’m rooting for him to succeed .

I love seeing this kind of honesty out of an athlete. Unfortunately, there will be idiots on Twitter and elsewhere that will beat him up for it.
Which is what partially got him into that place to begin with. Not necessarily started it, but made a bad situation even worse.

i thinks its the playstyle, hes kinda slow or blind when he goes to his knees, i thinks hes best saves comes when he stays up, also from pole to pole is kinda slow, he dosent kick hes body to slide, he rather stretch out and sitting on ice.
