Player Discussion: The Elvis Thread

I think Legace is a whipping boy because all goaltending has regressed each year over the last few years.
Korpisalo and Tarasov haven’t “regressed” or gotten worse in any way.

And REALITY is that neither has Merzlikins…

The “numbers”/“statistics” change much more than the actual player.

Well, Korpisalo’s NUMBERS are literally better this year than they have been in 3 years. And he WAS injured.

Tarasov isn’t “worse” in ANY way either. He’s played 37 games total in NA the last 3 years, 1/3 of them coming this year in the NHL.

The only thing that has “regressed” is the PERCEPTION of Elvis as a player.

There could be something to that, definitely. But, sticking with Columbus goalies, if you just look at Korpi and Tarasov's numbers, we are actually above league average save pct. wise. At this point, I really think Elvis needs something either the Jackets can't provide, or he may think he doesn't need, but he needs help. He looks lost out there after he gives up a couple goals. I hope he figures it out, more for his own health, mentally. I am not really concerned about the playing part of it, I just want to see him straighten out what is hurting him. That picture of him on the ice after the game kind of bums me out. Not being there, I don't know what preceded it. Hopefully the team acknowledged him before they left the ice, which I am assuming they did. I have never been to a game where the losing team doesn't say something to the goalie after a loss, but if they just went back to the locker room and left him out there, there could be bigger problems than just his mental health.
Granted I did not watch last night but the general consensus was that he didn't play that badly but horrid play in front of him and some bad bounces were the issue last night based on what I've read. If they left him on the ice last night those players had better look in the mirror. We are 100% trainwreck across the board.

Korpisalo's number have risen because he's hit a hot streak since coming back but he was well below average before then. Tarasov is pretty inconsistent too but he's young and shouldn't be subject to this mess.

If there are locker rom issues, everyone is to blame. Ever since Gudbranson commented about practice and then had to "clarify" his comments things have gotten worse. I pulled this from the latest Athletic article posted today.

"Sources have told The Athletic in the weeks that followed that several veterans have been frustrated by light practices and what they feel has been insufficient accountability for some players in the face of consistent losing, but it’s unclear if those veterans went to Larsen to ask for the temperature to be turned up in practice."

It seems pretty safe their are locker room issues of some form and Larsen has let it get out of control with his nice guy routine. I think this is leading to factions in the dressing room.

He's played 16 games this year and riding a 4 game heater that has significantly raised his numbers (25% of his season's performance). He could be well below that again a month from now with this team.

Nobody is denying Elvis has issues this year but I'm also not buying that Korpisalo is the answer just yet as well.

Before the last 4 appearances he was at .903, which is still above league average, just a little closer to it. No doubt the last 4 helped, so for someone like me that doesn't want to tank, and also compared to last season, it is pretty obvious so far that he has improved since having hip surgery, and I hope he keeps it up. Is he a savior in net, I would have to say no, but he has been pretty good. Also he has been good considering Columbus gave Elvis the big contract, and he has had to deal with trade talk, and I am sure he has seen or heard some of the negative comments about his play, but you can't deny his professionalism and the way he has responded this year.

Columbus gave the contract to Elvis, so they obviously need to help him get better, I just hope, for the team's sake, they do.

I agree about Tarasov also. He was very up and down here in Cleveland also. He has to still work at being more consistent, but the way this year is shaking out, it is looking more like he is having a wasted year.

He has looked better at times this year but still hasn't proven to be able to stay healthy or consistent for long periods. At this point I hope he continues to play well enough to have some trade value because this roster needs gutted.

Back to Elvis, he has been an absolute trainwreck and the terrible defense in front of him makes this a vicious cycle of sucking. They should be looking at every option including replacing Manny.

At this point it's like Elvis is cursed. He needs a reset so bad. Like the WSH game the other night, I thought he played well and looked calmer and better in his positioning in net than I remember seeing him this season, then he gets scored on, a goal that's not on him at all, and what do you know, soon pucks start bouncing in off people's helmets... it's like when he gets scored on, you know 4 more are going to soon follow, might be he falls apart and lets in complete softies, might be he plays well and the goals he can't be expected to save, might be totally unlucky freak bounces, whatever, you just know one way or another the goals will come.

At this point I wouldn't blame him if he wanted out.

Not all of the issues are because of his own play. Some of it, I believe, has to be mental. Maybe even the biggest hurdle, and I can't even blame him for that. That's not to excuse his own faults, he's still erratic in the net and has issues with consistency, but the team in front of him is obviously a mess too.

Unfortunately, with his contract there is no escaping this. In hindsight, management definitely gave him that big boy contract too early. But after the mass leaving spree, I can't fault them for it either. Just an all around shit situation for Elvis and the team. I don't think anyone is happy.

That's really good to hear actually.

If his positioning is looking better then that's something he and Manny can build off of.

"I'm always the one guy who's going to blame myself first."

He always manages to say something cringy like that.
Would you rather he blame the others on the team?

I'm not sure how to take that other than he's taking responsibility for himself. Maybe he is too hard on himself and it makes it harder to dig out of the hole.

The one guy makes it seem like he thinks others aren't accepting enough of the blame.

For a guy “taking responsibility”, he sure has lots of other ideas, other than himself, for why he’s not stopping the puck.

The whole problem isn’t that he’s now letting in more goals, it’s how BAD he actually looks **cough cough has always looked** in net.

Here’s how I look at it . Texier and Elvis both lost loved ones . Elvis watched his best friend die in front of him . Texier decided it was best to go home , left the team , and is playing with a different organization , Elvis took no time away , and tried to soldier on . I’m not one to make excuses , but I can’t imagine the cannon blast is the best think for his psyche . Bottom line , the defense is atrocious , he’s an emotional guy , no doubt that confidence is a huge factor for athletes . We saw Korpi not even resemble an NHL goalie for nearly 3 years , and now this season he’s turning that around . It’s easy to let recent judgements become our evaluation of a player . I’m reserving judgement ..
