Lived in San Diego for 5 years. Met my wife and got married there. My wife is from Santa Barbara. You'll swing by there on your drive south. If you are looking for things to do in San Diego, here are some of my favorites.

San Diego Zoo
Balboa Park
Old Town Mexican Cafe
(in Old Town). Fantastic food and not too expensive.
Pacific Beach, especially if its hot. Rent a surf board and catch some easy waves on the north side of the pier. They also offer lessons for the kids.
Padres game at Petco Park is a great venue as well.
Mt Soledad. Really great views and a tough little mile long hike that starts and ends at the veterans memorial. If its hot, pass on this. But a great place to watch a sunset.
Tour USS Midway aircraft carrier. There's a great Seafood place right next door called Top of the Market. I proposed to my wife after having dinner there.
Hotel del Coronado has a phenomenal brunch on Sundays in their Crown Room. You can watch the Navy SEALs BUDs class trying to bring their boats up on the rock jetty right next door if they have a class in session.
My daughter wants to move from Napa to Santa Barbara.

Dealing with Target customer service was interesting. While trying to resolve a glitch I asked the agent where he was.....

I wasn't expecting his answer

Petco is a beautiful park and 100% worth going to, but my advice is to go on a night game and not during the day if you don't want massive sunburns.

Also, in addition to the San Diego Zoo main campus, there's also the San Diego Zoo Safari Park about a half hour inland by Escondido. I've been to both and think I preferred the Safari Park because you see the animals in more open natural environments.

You can now select your seat and in your profile on the airline website you can state your seat preference. I always get a window. If i want to fall asleep I can prop up my sweater as a pillow and pass out for a bit.

I also like to sit on certain sides of the plane and if I can avoid a 3 seat row I snag it. I also select my row number based on my favorite Bruins so often I will snag either 11 or 23 and if I do fist class I choose 4 if available. The only time I break this is if a row 2 window is open and I have the money for the first class upgrade.

I realize I sound absolutely neurotic but it works and saves me from breaking down.

I am so glad I was able to give my mom some stuff when she was here 2 weeks ago so now packing to go back out in November is going to be a lot less stressful
I usually go aisle to give me some more leg room unless it's a redeye then I choose the window to sleep against. If you're booking early enough and depending on the airline you can get the emergency exit row so you can get a tiny bit more space. Closer to the front is easier in and out but I've found through experience that the last row in the back is most likely to not get filled by others and is closer to a bathroom so if all else fails and your selections are limited take the back row because there's a chance you'll get the row to yourself. Happened to me on an air alaska flight from Boston to LA once, I could lie down and sleep.

I am sitting at the gate. Boarding in a half hour. I am a wreck. Might cry. Might vomit. Might do both simultaneously who knows at this point.

The journey begins!

Good Luck. Enjoy your trip. I do not enjoy flying either. I get claustrophobic and want to jump off the plane after about an hour

Where you off too?

Also, safe travels.
Just got out. Roaming SFO at the moment. Hotel check in isn’t for a while.

Very smooth and uneventful flight. I ended up using 1.5mg of Ativan and i am a little wobbly on my feet right now. But I’m ok. Watched the new ghost busters movie once we crossed some clouds and wind over Wisconsin.

I’m here. It took a little more sedation than expected, and i cried both entering and exiting the plane, but I’m here.

Can those who use melatonin link me to what they use. I know I've seen it discussed on the boards but a search is not taking me to where I can find the threads. I have a friend who is having trouble sleeping so I thought I would suggest something to her.

I tried to use gummies a while back but didn't notice very much of an effect TBQH.

Passing on advice from a friend:
Major warning, if you use Venmo, they are now coding all credit card payments as cash advances. I just got off the phone with my credit card company and they said this is causing havoc. People are being charged transaction fees as well as interest.
