The Devils are exciting

Not trying to start a war but I didn't think the Leafs where anywhere near as advertised. I kept hearing about this massive depth and forcheck...Both of which I thought the Devils had the better of. It looked to me that Devils had the better of the puck battles and the Devils bottom six, maybe even bottom 9 where much better than the Leafs

Don't get me wrong Matthews is a beast and I think he has the potential to become the best American born Hockey player ever. But I didn't really see the depth everyone was talking about.

Exciting doesn't excite me...Winning does. I wont care how they do it, what it looks like or at what speed they do it if they can get back to winning 45+ games a year, every year.

the problem here is how many people on this board are serious. they think we were trapping right up until September 2017

You are right. It is HF boards and the internet after all. I guess I should use more emoticons in my posts so it's easier for people to tell when I'm joking.

Not just here, opposing announcers bring that garbage up every time they play the Devils.

This really doesn't need to be a Leafs vs. Devils thread, but just to put all this Leafs outshot the Devils stuff to bed...

The Leafs took over the game attempts-wise once the Devils went up by 2. This is normal and is commonly referred to as score effects.

I don't think anyone is saying Schneider wasn't a huge reason we won, because of course he was. Probably our best player last night. Now I don't know who was counting shots, but it didn't seem like a 50 shot night. I can buy 40, but he wasn't peppered as bad as the box score says. Thinking they tacked on extra shots from some of those scrums or counted ones that hit the outside of the net. Wouldn't be the first building to do that.

What's frustrating is this narrative that the Leafs beat themselves from errors, because it takes away from the Devils. Their entire game plan is to apply co start pressure through speed and layers if support to cause turnovers so they can jump on the counter attack. The Leafs folded under this pressure a lot, and it cost them the game.

There’s really no reason that narrative should frustrate you. It happened to the Leafs a few times to. Having your goalie play well and your forwards take advantage of errors is a positive, not a negative. I have no clue why Devils fans are taking this as an insult. It’s how you win games. It’s not always going to be pretty but it’s a good sign when you can grab 2 points out of a game that didn’t go perfect.

where are those people? I haven't seen any.

Not sure why this has devolved into a Leafs-Devils pissing match. If you want that, go to the GDT. This thread is about the Devils youth and how they aren't boring anymore.
It’s really just one poster, who isn’t even a Devils fan. Won’t name names, but he basically salivates over any team that beats the leafs and baits leafs fans into their threads.

Really a shame nothing has been done about this problem.

The site you got that from has the score adjusted Corsi at 55.55% for the Leafs. So they did outshoot them even after taking score effects into account.

I mean if you want to stop the thread from being about the Leafs, stop bringing them up.

Not mentioned enough last night, but I was impressed by the Devils relatively no name defence of Severson, Butcher, and Santini. Greene and Moore you know what to expect. But overall they are mobile and quick puck movers. Pretty underrated group.

I was listening to a few pundit hot takes and Severson is the only one that ever gets any credit.

It is criminal how badly underrated Greene is. He is a very good Dman.

What is everyone even arguing about?

I guess this is what happens when two utlra-paranoid "everyone's out to get us" fan bases play each other.

The trap ruining hockey and it being exclusively the devils fault has been nonsense we've had to fend off for years. This thread itself is ample evidence a good many, even those being supportive, think the Devils continued to use it until recently.

Can't give us crap for years and then call us paranoid when we push back.

I think it's safe to call New Jersey an exciting team. I just wish other fans would acknowledge that NJ has one of the best goalies in the league in Cory Schneider. He appears to be so underrated by non-Devils fans. It just seems so disrespectful to this up-and-coming team not to acknowledge Schneider's elite abilities. He's certainly a favourite of mine.

Do you want to take me up on the avatar bet about the Leafs/Devils next game? Or about their end of season standings?

Always liked Andy Greene. He's been underrated for awhile in NJ, even in the lean years.

He is starting to get a little long in the tooth but he can still play. I think Team USA were wrong to leave him off a couple of Olympic teams over the years.

Devils need to find a long term replacement for him on the left side to really start getting ready to take a next step. Either through trade or with their first in this draft. I'm not really worried about RD as I think Severson and Santini can get it done

I also really like Igor Rykov as a defensive prospect but they need more.

He is underrated by some Devil's fans. It makes sense because of how spoiled we were with Marty.

The most underrated Devil by Devil fans though is either Zacha or Severson. It amazes me how much our fans sleep on these two. Especially on other hockey communities like Reddit.

Marty was a top 5 goalie of all time. Hockey legend for all. It's natural to compare Schneider to his predecessor. Compared to Marty, of course Schneider doesn't measure up. However, compared to his own peers? Elite.

To be honest, I notice it more among non-Devils fans. Always wanting to credit the rest of the team but not Schneider. The man is great enough to turn the Devils into a contender if a few other things go right. I would just like to see a bit more recognition, though obviously that's not on the Devils fans but rather on the non-fans. Great parting gift by Lamoriello before he left for good.

Severson's stats line may not be impressive points wise. 0-0-0. But as mentioned earlier, I was throughly impressed by him last night. He's a quietly efficient player all coaches value. Greene still looks good to me, he's a wily vet, with a low panic threshold. Devils will have ample time to focus on Defence in the draft. With Paul Castron now running the draft under GM Shero. The Devils are now in good hands after black hole years of just filling holes with wasteful contracts on players that led nowhere.

As a neutral fan of the NHL, I can't wait to see how they further develop. I don't even mind saying, I missed them as one of the up and comers. The season is still early, but for suffering Devils fans that saw no light until Shero started the rebuild. I am happy for Devils fans, and that they are indeed exciting and are getting their respect back.

I don't think the Devils are quite there yet. Id reexamine that though around December. I think they are on the upswing but they are going to need more time. I do think they are deeper than the Leafs. But right now, I wouldn't even bet on the Devils making the playoffs this season...their Defense is extremely young and so are their most promising forwards.

You understand the Devils just beat the Leafs without 3 of their starters in the lineup right?

I think Matthews is a special player and I don't think that the Devils have anything close to him and that is a big difference... But depth? The Devils 4th line is largely fill in players and they dominated every time they were out there. Their bottom 6 scored 4 of the 6 goals. Wood got 2 he didn't even start the season, he was a healthy scratch. Coleman may not have a job when Boyle is healthy and Gibbons is pretty much an AHL player who is here only to kill penalties due to injury. They dominated in that game. Those players accounted for 4 of the 6 goals.

Being better than NJ this season doesn't really mean much they are still very much a work in progress.
