Unless Leafs significantly improve by end of July (in standings and roster), Nonis can join Burke for all I care.

Enough of mediocracy, and Nonis has been part of the failing front office. So, as I said earlier, clock doesn't reset on him.

I don't believe for ONE second that MLSE is content with missing the playoffs for a ninth year in a row, nor do I believe that MLSE wants him to build long term.
To be honest, if they want even a taste of success, their hands are almost tied. The original plan to make this team better didn't work because it was done improperly, maybe they now have a sense of what is required and a man who is willing to do it the right way. The things that we've done clearly haven't been working.

I personally always felt that was blown way out of proportion by people. I can say it never prevented any trades from happening and there would be a very very very strong chance I'm right when I say that.

it's not only that, it's just in general, burke's hockey 'principles' pissed me off, because i think they made us operate like a small market more or less

he was against long term deals (even to good players), cap circumvention, and anything that gave us an advantage

At least with Nonis getting this 3 year contract it could end the talk that if the Leafs don't make the Playoffs this season he could be fired, because yesterday I heard John Shannon mention that could happen.

Did he get an extension or not?

Consistency in the GM position would be nice but I'm skeptical right now. I'd rather be wrong this time around.

I'm happy to hear that he's not willing to trade young players unless it's for another young player of value to the team. I guess I can rest easy that if Luongo is coming, Gardiner isn't going the other way. I don't think Luongo is coming though.

Seems like he has the same philosophies as Burke but the difference is obviously in the style in which they'll go about trying to get the job done. If there's one thing we know from Nonis' resume is that he's a patient guy. He's acknowledged that there are building blocks in place so he's going to have to get creative to find ways to address the team needs without blowing up everything and starting from scratch. At this point, I don't think either side wants to do that.

I really hope that when a reporter asked if Nonis would have full autonomy and Anselmi responded that 'Yes, he will have full authority', that it was just a misworded response. There is a huge difference between authority and autonomy.

Nonis can say all he wants and all the things that he has been told by MLSE, but missing this season's playoffs and an early slide next year might show a conflict when the board start to flex their collective autonomy on Nonis.

But Burke was ultimately the boss and had to make the final decision. Nonis contributed a lot behind the scenes but it was all under the eye and approval of Burke. Their personalities are quite different and with Nonis with the authority to run the team as he wants, you can't assume that he'll go about business exactly like Burke did.

What the **** is going on?

He hasn't even proven anything, this organization is just getting a little too crazy for me.

When Nick attacked Patrick Roy private life two years ago on sportsnet on tv that got me angry. Why not go into Messier or Anderson? What a hypocrite

Doug Maclean just said he heard last night he has a 3 year contract extension with the leafs, Nonis will be on hockey central at 12:20

It's a good move for no other reason it sends a message. A message that Nonis doesn't need to blow everything up and get it done in the next year. He has time to build properly.

The bolded is classic overanalysis. Dave Nonis isn't going to be influenced by the board when he makes hockey related decisions. Does he have to answer to the board? Sure, so did Burke, and JFJ and Quinn before him. But this isn't going to be like when JFJ was here and he was denied the request to blow up the team and rebuild.

Nonis did admit that while there is still pressure to make the playoffs, the board at MLSE would not be upset with another non-playoff finish so long as the team is building towards improvement.

He also specifically mentioned that he had absolutely no interest in trading young impact players and prospects for NHL veterans. He said the only way he would entertain trading the young players they have put in place (mentioned Gardiner and Rielly specifically) is if it was in return for other young players.

Also just as a note: Nonis did NOT receive a 3 year contract. He has multiple years (believed to be 3) existing on his current deal as Director of Hockey Ops. They are simply reworking that contract to accomodate the position change.

agreed the board did not say he was interim, but given the fact the board made an abropt decision, and didn't evaluate any other candidates, and only offered nonis a rather short contract, implys to me anyway that nonis is somewhat of an interim gm.

put another way i think the board is in search for a new gm, and that search may be nonis.

The board essentially gave themselves a very extended window to search for the next long term gm without having pressure that would accompany the inclusion of the word interim in association with nonis.

Now that I've had time to digest the whirlwind that was yesterday, I still think the situation stinks to high heaven, but I am very impressed with what Nonis has had to say in the multiple interviews I've listened to.

I believe that Nonis will carry on Burke's legacy of building this team for the future, primarily focusing on a blueprint that is conducive to sustainable, long term success.

One thing I noticed in listening to him on Hockey Central is how sad he sounded. It really sounded that he would have given anything to undo what happened yesterday. I mean, I can only imagine what it's like to have one of your best friends fired and you take over his job. He actually said, quoting Carlyle, you spend 24 hours grieving and then you move on. Call me crazy but I would have thought because this is the Toronto Maple Leafs, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world our GMs would be excited to have the big job. Situations like this just muddy the whole thing and that's really what I take issue with out of this whole thing.

it is respect for his long time friend and co-worker, nothing to do with lack of excitement
