Nonis just said the only way he's moving Gardiner or Rielly is for another good young player. If we're getting Luongo Nonis is going to do it on his terms. He says he likes that there's pressure to make the playoffs each year but they aren't going to move young players to do that. He said trading guys like Gardiner and Rielly would set them back years.

I don't really care how long he gets extended.

For me, the clock hasn't reset on him. If Leafs fail to significantly improve, he needs to go as well. He has been part of Leafs management long enough.

Hopefully he sticks to his guns.

Nonis said he doesn't operate the same way as Burke. He won't do the early trade freeze.

I don't believe for ONE second that MLSE is content with missing the playoffs for a ninth year in a row, nor do I believe that MLSE wants him to build long term.

I personally always felt that was blown way out of proportion by people. I can say it never prevented any trades from happening and there would be a very very very strong chance I'm right when I say that.

Nonis said he was not asked to make the playoffs but to build the team longterm.
"Pieces here that are gonna be here long term.
"He was not asked to make the playoffs" and wont be fired if he does not"
"want's size down the middle"
"want to build from the net out like burke"
"you can't put the building blocks in place then move them
"if we trade a young player we trade him for another young player for a position we need"

This is fantastic news, hopefully he lives up to these comments.

Why give the man false hope? we know he'll be replaced by Eakins soon anyway.

The coaching carousel has got to stop. I always would prefer a veteran coach here instead of a rookie anyway. I don't think this is the place for a coach to get his first head coaching gig in the NHL. If Eakins goes somewhere else, I won't be shedding a tear.

At least with Nonis getting this 3 year contract it could end the talk that if the Leafs don't make the Playoffs this season he could be fired, because yesterday I heard John Shannon mention that could happen.
