Ill take a 1st or 2nd or 3rd round win every day and twice on sundays. Winning rounds and going deeper signifies progress doesn't it?

It signals you beat one team. Not necessarily progress. second place is first place for loosers.

LOL, strong persecution complex you have there.

Individual players shouldn't be criticized for lack of team success, judge everyone on their own merit. Nylander was great in the playoffs, Marner sucked, yet they're both Leafs. See how that works?

And the Leafs as a team sucked in the playoffs, yet again.

surely you agree that the Avalanche, perennial 2nd round losers, are not actually an elite team, right?

Anyone who has driven a car knows you don’t go from zero to 100 MPH instantly, you have to go thru the gears……..stages…….round wins.

Except as someone posted Mackinnon and Marners playoff numbers are miles apart...yea I know Nate had a rough go against Vegas this year but he still put up 15 pts in 10 games with 8 goals. He is doing his part, Marner not so much.

They still have the same number of championships. Which is the only thing that matters in a team sport. Team Championships. For great players who never win the cup there is always that asterisk besides their name , where people question just how good they really are. A cup removes all doubt.

If the Leafs win the first round this year and lose in the second I will be a little happier because it shows progress. However I will then expect them go go further the next and win the cup the following year………..it’s called progression.
Up to this point in 5 years we have seen nothing, zero, nada and in fact you could make a strong case that they actually regressed this year with a massive choke

0 playoffs rounds. huh.

at least now he's a 2nd round stud thanks to his genius cap GM who has given him the elite depth that our GM has screwed us out of.
The screwed depth that was responsible for scoring 92% of the forwards goals in the playoffs.

I will take some playoff success over none at all. Going deeper into the playoffs would be fun and exciting and dramatic. I personally dont watch hockey and the leafs just for the cup and the cup only. Im a fan of the sport and of the blue and white. If the leafs lost while battling and leaving it all out on the ice I could live with that, but they don't and that leaves the sour taste in my mouth, not not winning the cup. Cup is just the cherry on top.

As long as Vas plays at his current level, TB will still be TB. I can see they will not be a force in the regular season like None of Kuch or Point will be in the top 5 in scoring but comes playoffs they will turn on a switch and dominate. Kuch, Point, Hedman, Stamkos, Cirelli,McD and Vas are just too dominant.
Can’t wait to see a team to beat them in the playoffs though.

It almost filthy how deep they are....

Vas is on another planet. One team has the best player (after Connor) in Kucherov and the best goalie in Vas and arguably the best Dman in Hedman all on reasonably friendly contracts. Gross!

Envy of all NHL, as not only their top 3 players are in three different positions but also the top 3 if not the best in their position in the league.

Agreed. Dubas thought if he gave everything that the core 4 wanted, they would reward him. Well guess what, matthews and marner especially have zero interest in winning a cup. It’s just about the cashola.
Dubas got played, and at some point in the not so distant future, he will pay with his job

TSN's O'Dog has stated many, many times that most guys don't give too much of a shit when it comes to winning a cup. They know only 1 team does it every year and they are for the most part just looking to get paid. How else do explain players signing in arizona or Columbus. If they all cared about winning...the shitty cities and teams would never get any UFA's to come there. Yet...they still do get them. Not too many high end players...but they still get some.

Funny how some here like to point to other players shortcomings to justify Leafs players shortcomings. It is like me telling the kids getting a D in your test is not good but they point to another kid who also got a D and said it is okay. Do you ask your boss to decrease your salary bc someone else is working as much as you but being paid less?
Mack is miles ahead of any players on the Leafs. McDavid is miles ahead anyone in the League barring Kuch. The perfect line in Boston till last season is still the best and most balance line in Hockey. Yet none of them won anything team wise the last 5 years, does that mean they suck like the Leafs players?
Fact is, the Leafs is not a Vas away from being a contender as long as AM and Marner choke in the playoffs.
They need to figure it out how to succeed in playoffs, Willie seemed to figured it out by looking at last playoffs but let’s see if he can do it again before calling him Mr. Playoffs.
I am not going crap on being in playoffs 5 yrs… bc to me, the first two years were house money. It had been three years of not advancing playoffs/ins, they(Dubas, Keefe, AM, Marner, JT)better figure is out or I doubt they ever will playing together.

I agree with that bc I have heard enough stories(radio hosts and others) that a lot of players just can’t wait to get home after each game and practice, and would only focus on winning when their teams are in that position-2nd round or even Conf Finals.
Having said that, those are usually not your top players. Top players want to win or at the very least perform due to their ego and pride.

He'll be at 1.25/ppg pace this season, IMO.
Nobody disputes that but he’ll be at a 0.00 gpg pace in the playoffs and they’ll get eliminated in the first round in pathetic fashion again, more than likely because they have over 33 million in 3 forwards

The guys who sign in Arizona or CLB typically are not flush with other options and if they sign there the vast majority are running out of there as soon as they can ... O-Dog is a fun guy, not someone I would call dedicated to his craft, I have no doubt he wouldn't care if he won a championship and would rather cash a cheque. He see things through his perspective. When you see grown men crying because they lost a playoff round or a championship series, I think it matters to some.
