If Point was money hungry like the people on our team, he would have just signed another bridge deal to take him to UFA when the cap will begin to rise. Lets not try and act like the Marner contract is good, especially with his comparables. Marner wanted at least 9x3 while Point settled for 6.75x3.

Its hilarious, Tampa gets Point at 6.75x3 and then 9.5 x8.

Maner gets 10.9x6, and you know his next contract will likely have a higher aav than the current one.

These contracts are likely going to cost Dubas his job here, and really hurt his career.

No chance Point is taking another bridge deal. Way too much risk involved for him.

If Point and Marner's situations/teams were reversed so would their post entry level contracts have been. Tampa has been squeezed against the cap for awhile now while having to re-sign key players. The Leafs are squeezed against the cap AFTER signing their key players. There is a big difference.

You are certainly correct that Dubas completely misfired on the contracts he gave out and the flat cap has really exposed that.

I hope Mitch enjoys playing with his new dumpster LW'er this year.

I wonder if he asks himself why they can't afford better depth?
HE will just say stuff like, we created chances and just could not score.

His LW will be JT next season. You can see thats what Dubas and Keefe are planning by keeping Kerfoot.

Simple. Leafs didn't predict the pandemic.

Such a pathetic management that they couldn't predict COVID19 and the flat cap.

Brayden Point took a bridge deal at 3 x $6.75 million before the pandemic, while Marner wanted $9 million per for a 3 year bridge...greed is greed...his contract was an ugly contract then, and uglier now.

The deals for those 3 young RFAs wouldn't be as bad if the terms were longer, but Dubas gave them everything and walked them to UFA status at very young ages.

does not excuse our contracts but tampa is already almost 4 mill over the cap for this year with 19 players signed

next year they have 3.4 mill cap room with only 13 players signed

I wouldn't mind that problem after back-to-back Cup wins...Point took a reasonable bridged deal to help his team win before asking for big money.

100% I agree ... but it may be good for us in a year or so ... they will have to shed some good pieces ...

My hate for this loser went up even more after seeing that point for That contract. I’m cheering against this team until that selfish clown is gone.

It's hard to root for this guy after watching Point. Everything marner seems to do is for $. It's a business/career. I get it... but you gotta sacrifice at least a little bit for the team. He won't for anything and when things fall apart every spring he deflects any blame. Can't wait till he's gone. He's the most unlikable player on the team since I started watching.

Point's contract was always going to be lower's than Marner. It's not a surprise or shock
The tax card is very real. He is making less but will take home way more than Marner still

He deserves it. What Point did in back to back playoffs was special. IMO he should have won the 2020 Conn Smythe, easily over Hedman.

seeing marner make the money he makes while ghosting 3 straight playoff runs is a joke. I'm with the angry mob on this one. get this brat out of here and maybe they can still salvage something.

Do you really think that Marner would care if we were over the cap at the time he is looking for a contract? He would just say it isn't his problem and the team needs to figure it out. That's why TB wins and we don't. They all took lesser deals because they knew they couldn't win if they all tried to be greedy.

I don't think anyone would have an issue with him being overpaid if he was doing the same things Point is doing. That's what the money is for!

The thing is Marner puts up more points than Point plus has been PKing.
"Curious Case" is very accurate for Marner. He's a top player in the League, and yet... he leaves you wanting more.

...in the playoffs.

Even Kampf has more playoff goals than Marner the last two years.

Not in the playoffs he doesn't. And that's the problem with Marner right there, he might be a regular season 1st team all-star but as soon as the playoffs start ...

Marner is an enigma for me. I want to call him 100000 insults at this very moment but I'm also too insecure about betting against him. The chap was 23 during the regular season last year. My gut feeling is he will win us back over and we would one day regret it if we chased him out of town.

Teams who have cap space and weren't already trending upwards since 2016 don't do anything interesting with it and never catch up to us in the standings or win the cup. Yesterday was a good example of that. Teams who had that extra cap edge on us because of Marners overpayment threw it away on depth players.

There’s no rational person who can like marner.
