the 'core 4' isnt our problem, its our soft as fresh pudding Defense, who also happen to be mistake prone, and then add bad coaching to the mix, and we are where we are.

and by bad coaching, what i mean is, you have Austin bloody Matthews, and you should design the offense to give him as many looks, shots, and 1-timers possible, and play him till he drops.
Instead, we have a basket weave offense and nobody is ever in the right spot for a 1-timer because they are too busy skating back and forth to the point it looks like a dance class.
who has the best 1-timers in hockey?
OV
Drais
Pasta
Matthews
etc
etc
...every other team sets up their guy to take that 1-timer as often as possible, and non stop on the PP
How many opportunities has Matthews had this series, or this entire season? ...he had a bunch of 1-timer goals last year, and almost none this year, but, he barely gets set up to take them either. (BAD COACHING)

Yeah, seriously. When his contract is up and we haven't already unloaded him, there's no obligation on either side. Toronto is one of 32 teams he could sign with and he is one of hundreds of players they could sign to be an offensive winger. Not choosing this one specific player out of hundreds doesn't make us Petty or a jilted ex, nor is it an arbitrary just because decision.
No, making the decision two years out, absent knowledge of how good he'll be, what price point he'd sign at, and what the actual alternatives are makes it the bolded.

I still think Matthews is playing injured right now. And it'd be crazy to get rid of him.

While healthy, Marner and Nylander do NOT show up in playoffs. At all. Even during the regular season they're streaky as hell. Nylander is gonna want too much on his next contract, Mitch has to go though.

Tavares needs to be demoted to less important roles, he's getting older and it shows you can't be playing him maximum time on the ice anymore against 20 year old determined NHLers. I still want him to retire in the blue and white.
Marner is 6th in playoff scoring ...Nylander is PPG the past 3 seasons, and is usually quite visible
Tavares is already on a lesser role as our #2C and he would still be the #1C on 1/2 the teams in the league.
its our defense that just sucks.

Feel free to get back on the bandwagon when they win tomorrow… or continue on with the other pessimists in saying it’s only one win, they’ll lose game 5 at home.
We should win tomorrow night we should be the hungrier team .
As I said being a realist we will make it to gamec7 then a complete melt down .

When Marner says things like that it's because he cares. Like why even say that if you truly don't care?

Just put your head down, take the high road and show them on the ice.

The first step is admitting you have a problem.
They don’t want to.
It’s bad luck, it’s the refs, we got goalied, the other team was lucky, it was our goalie, it was Holl, it was this…
Now can these guys actually stand up and fight to the end or will they just accept defeat with a sigh and the same tired post game responses.

Also potential winning a game to make it 3-1 in a series vs the 8th seed doesn’t invalidate the criticisms against the team and core players.

You only just upgraded your situation from humiliation to underachievement. That’s like getting an F+.

The funny thing is I believe they do listen to what media says. Whether they will admit it or not.

I don’t think Marner can handle the Toronto market. I think he would thrive in a smaller market but all the demons and past failures are in Marners head.

I’m not making a big deal out of this comment since it’s coming from Shambles In Our Brains. But it is chuckle worthy that not caring about what people say and focusing on yourselves is kind of the definition of “self centered.” I’m just poking fun.

You have to start somewhere if you want to turn the F+ into an A. Hard work. 1 game and then the next. That’s what this core doesn’t get. They think they can play like game 25 of the regular season and they will just succeed. Management thinks just because you drafted 3 guys high and added Tavares you have to win. No, you don’t.

Ofcourse they listen to the medias. I will bet that some of them are even on this board, heck they might even post stuff here too.

What these guys don’t understand is that they find excuses and give up too easy. When they don’t, they win, l just look at the TB series. They came back while being outplayed and won games and the series. Really don’t know why they don’t have that mentality anymore considered it was only 2 weeks ago.

Which reminded me of the movie I saw the other night about the football team at De La Salle, and how the coach brought the players to a vet hospital and one of the players was having a trendmill challenge with a vet and the player stopped bc he thought the vet can go a lot longer and then the vet just told him, I can only go a bit longer. Really thought our boys learnt that but it seemed like they are giving up too easy again.

None of our "core 4 half the cap forwards" have ANY goals in the 2nd round. Our core was good in round 1, and then disappeared.

As Dangle asked Adam and Jesse yesterday. "Hey, Colorado won the cup last year, right? Who on their team was amazing in the first round?"

They all laughingly answered, "Honestly, we don't know". And then Steve screamed at the top of his lungs, "YOU DON'T REMEMBER BECAUSE THE FIRST ROUND DOESN'T f***ING MATTER!!!!"

Truer words have never been spoken.

Yeah. The best time to start was Game 1, then Game 2. Both times they misfired and then Game 3 was really their last stand to meaningfully chip away down 2-0, headed down to Florida.

Basically if they do anything good or special in Game 4, the question I will be asking is “why not one game ago, 2 games ago?”

Now they need an all time rare comeback attempt and it starts with Game 4. But we don’t know if they’re just playing free and easy for a lost cause last stand or whatever. We’ll see.

In playoffs, you are only as good as your last game. If any of our guys score an OT winner, that player played great, he was clutch despite being crap for the whole series. Pretty much the story of Kerfoot in the first round. Lol.

I think that the core together is incapable of winning, but split up with players who have the "it" factor theyll probably win.

So you have to suck it up and realize that it hasnt worked in 7 years, and are these guys Florida or Calgary?

Accept the fact that theyll win in a different system and team with different elite players riding shotgun, and retool.

Nylander will probably be the one to go if Dubas is GM for another season and theyll do a runback

I don't see how this specific core can come back from this unless they reverse sweep Florida. They just don't have it when it matters. Matthews and Marner will probably win cups in their careers if they are on different teams.

Gotta admit that quote is not a good sign. Looks like Marner is already rattled, we’ll see how he plays tomorrow, if they come out flat again then blow the f***ing team up.

What I find the most disturbing piece with this team is how much talent it has and yet every year the same sh!t. Star power galore but when it comes down to brass tax they tuck tail and whimper away.
Hiw is it the Kraken and Vegas (first year ) can go so far with absolutely no name talents. This is beyond embarrassing.
Ship a couple of these clowns out. I post hope in this group after the Columbus series. They are an extremely unlikable team.
They have taken all the joy I once had in this organization.i like the team better when we had only a few good players and alot of lunch pail boys. Screw shinny hockey, give me men's league!
