The Bruins and Jeremy Swayman are far apart in contract term (length) and dollar amount.

Dipietro is hardly AHL talent.
Bussi is disappointing but even he is borderline #3...
How to date yourself as a hockey fan...

Jump to page 38 about a debate about Swayman and his contract talks with Boston. See the name Dipietro and automatically jump to the conclusion a poster trying to point out the risk of signing a younger goalie to long term big money (before reading the entire post).

Ummm nope, different Dipietro... I'm not the only one who had this though process, right, RIGHT?!?

I don't really see the danger here, does anyone say "he's not an NHL goalie" no, he's at worst, an average goalie. He isn't 28/29 or anything.

So he underperforms and you trade him in 2-4 years with a small bit of retention, or not. (cap will also be up by that time)

starter number 1 quality goalies are at a premium, and we haven't seen much in the pipelines anywhere. So I dont' get it.

8X8 Seems like a no brainer. NMC ONLY or 20 team NTC for 2-3 years if that's what he's asking.

Seems like next no risk here, aside from cap considerations.

Boston should have never let Ullmark go without signing Swayman...he has them by the hair now.
Maybe not, he needs to sign and if does not sign, he does not play and come December 1st and is not signed he has to sit out the year. He sits out the year he is no closer too free agency, and he loses millions of dollars.

And the Bruins miss the playoffs and Sweeny is fired. The new GM signs Swayman to an even bigger contract than what could have got him in camp this year.

I mean he is two seasons from Ufa regardless of if he plays or not. He's hitting Ufa based on age not based on years of service and not signing doesn't stop him from aging.

If that happens though then they can’t sign Zadorov or Lindholm iirc

So they’re in a tough spot either way

I don’t know why it keeps being brought up about Swayman missing the whole season

It simply doesn’t happen

Bruins will not miss the playoffs because they did not have Swayman. I think he is overvaluing himself, wanted him playing goal this year but you cannot pay him what he is looking for, time to move on.

That isn't going to happen either. Swayman isn't gonna get a much bigger contract if he hold out.
Let’s say the Bruins offer 8 mil x six years right now. Swayman sits out the year. That costs him 8 mil. Bruins miss the playoffs and fire Sweeny. The new GM signs Swayman to 10 mil x 8 years. That’s more than 30 million added to Swsyman’s contract. He gets the eight mil sacrificed this year back and a lot more.

So you think Korpi and Bussi give equal results to Ullmark and Swayman?

If not, which NHL goalies are available days before camp they could replace Swayman with?
i think cossa is ready to start back up duty in detroit. i'd be willing to trade lyon or husso 50% retained, whichever boston values more. i bet that would light a fire under swayman's ass, to see sweeney making plans to play out the year without him

And then, we wake up and none of this happened

He's not getting 10m at all especially not after missing an entire year. That's not how things work. You don't get paid even more if you do nothing for a entire year. You get less.

As Friedman pointed out, they wanted to trade Ullmark before he submitted his new no trade list. If they had waited, it's possible the trade options would have got smaller.

DiPietro had better numbers than Bussi did in the AHL last year. To say one guy is hardly AHL talent while the other is a borderline #3 is an interesting take
It's a poor take and his reasoning is height. Let it play out. "He was in the ECHL 2 years ago"

Goalies are voodoo. Swayman has all the leverage but why bury your own prospects in pre season? The games are a scramble with there sometimes being only 5 or 6 legit players on each team. I hope Mikey D makes it. He's 6 feet but he's a battler and has had a tough go in life. Boston might have a player here and the RH Swede D may play. Studnicka was a wet fart for Vancouver. Stop sending us your garbage. Loui Ericsson was a travesty. I'm hoping Heinen, Debrusk and Forbort turn out. We gave you Cam ffs.

Call me crazy... but I feel like the B's are in a bit of an impossible position here.

Paying goalies the big bucks is fraught with issues. They can get hurt, they can suffer from poor play, and honestly, more importantly, to win a Stanley Cup, you have to go through 4 teams -- at least one of which will have a goalie making $5-6m less performing at the same level.

No GM really wants to say "I'm building a team to win in 3-4 years" when they've got a team as good as the B's are right now.... which is essentially what you're saying when you give a young player 8-years.... "I'm overpaying you now, in hopes that as the cap rises and you continue to improve, you'll be underpaid in the back half".

Swayman apparently wants $9.5 x 8... the B's I'd imagine want to be at $6m x 4 or 5. If you imagine that he's a $13-14m goalie in 4-5 years... it's essentially the same money. Considering where the B's are at as a franchise right now, $6m x5 is an unquestionably better idea.

It's not a "non-belief" in Jeremy Swayman, simply an identification that goaltending is voodoo, and the team is in a position to win now.
Yeah, I mean look at Florida. What have they won?

Clearly you have not seen korpisalo. If Boston is forced to rely on the Korpisalo that was in Ottawa last year for say 50 games, you're looking at possibly as much as a 50 goal differential in those 50 games. Between the two guys you had stopping way more than average goaltending and Korpisalo giving up way more than average, stats say that is roughly what you're looking at. And ya that alone might cook Boston's chances.

The B’s are dumb not to sign Swayman. He was excellent in the playoffs last season and there are no FA goalies who can replace him in the lineup. Trading for a replacement will cost you a top 6 player. Jacob’s is just such an a….ole.

It's crazy isn't it....anyway they made their bed . If they start looking at trades wonder if they kick tires on someone like Gibson, he's got a connection to Lindholm.

Gibson and Zegras for Swayman and salary (geekie?)

Geekie ! that is a head scratcher, and Zegras is not a Bruin.

Could Swayman not play in Europe? Bruins miss the playoffs imo without him. Huge leverage come summer 2025. Looks like Shesterkin might be in the 12 per range. Might be the best move for Swayman to hold out for 10 x 8? 80 million next summer is a lot better than 50 now.

Just bite the bullet. Bruins figured they had a team still influenced by the old core and they’d all wanna sign friendly contracts.
They might be wise to play hardball with Swayman and not budge.

Otherwise, if they give him his big payday, well suddenly Bruins players aren't so into friendly contracts anymore.

I dunno. I hate the Bruins because of how good they are every year when everyone expects them to drop, and because their players sign friendly deals.

Maybe they need to show Swayman where the door is and shop around for a servicable goalie.
