anyone here know what to look for when buying a laptop?

Do NOT under any circumstance buy a Toshiba. My wife and I invented the acronym Totally Overpriced **** Heap Is Broken Again.

Thing is 3 years old -

Battery doesn't charge
Keys falling off
Mouse pad and buttons don't work

I'm counting the days till it dies and I can buy something better.

Shame. Toshiba used to be the best bang for the buck in the laptop world.

Jason you should get a fischer price laptop.

I'm not familiar with that brand. Where is it on the quality spectrum between Hasbro and Mattel?

Every single brand has lemons, or bad models, batches etc. It's unfortunate when it happens to you or someone you know but it really shouldn't weigh into decision making.

Check review sites, especially of the exact model you'll be buying. Don't go in day one. Wait a few months. Toshiba are great. Asus are as well. Quite a few great HP models, even if I'm not a fan.

Need to be objective when it comes to these types of purchases. Like cars, etc.

No I don't work for any of these brands. I'm just in IT and I see brand competition and praising/slamming way too often based on one or a few experiences. Way too small to judge by.

Looking for a good spot on this for some feedback. My son is obsessed with Minecraft and Legos. He wanted to start making videos reviewing sets and video games.

This is his first with Minecraft blind boxes for the game.

Still getting a hand on video editing on my laptop (suggestions would help). Was also his first time talking in front of a camera.

Thanks!

:biglaugh: That is absolutely the truth too. I have never had a Toshiba last more than 2 - 2 1/2 years.

The toshiba I used at work was awesomely tiny and easy to carry around but wasn't particularly powerful. The HP that replaced it is not so tiny but not any quicker either. :shakehead

HP and Toshiba are crap now. Toshiba has been going in that direction for awhile.

Really depends on what you are using it for.

If price isnt an issue (and not saying youre gona have to spend an arm and a leg), the Lenovo yogas are really nice computers. Lightweight, compact, and good quality imo.

Down from that would be Acer and Asus has bang for your buck computers as long as youre not basically running a business on it and/or doing a large amount of work that requires downloading a lot of software, platforms, etc.

And then theres Apple of course. I have always been an apple guy but use windows at work so to me either or is fine.

Again depends on what you're willing to spend.

As with many things, you get what you pay for in a computer. Do a bit of research to figure out how strong a laptop you feel fits your lifestyle, then look around at some price points. Do note that laptops aren't going to offer much in computing power in respect to cost as a majority of the cost goes to the portability of the computer. I do second Lenovo branded laptops. A friend I know got one a couple years back for gaming and it still suits him well.

Lenovo's also go on sale quite often. If you are eyeing a specific model and it's not on sale it would behoove you to wait. In about 2 weeks you'll get it half off.

Also, Acer and Asus are on on totally different levels. Asus is a premium product while Acer is a bargain brand. Apples are a rip off IMO. If you are okay with the price I guess they are fine machines. It really depends on what you are doing with it.

I would stay away from Apple if you are gaming. They run hot and the graphics cards aren't exactly powerful. The slim line cases that they have offer no ventilation. I played Diablo 3 on my Macbook and I could fry a steak on it after I was done. (exaggeration)

It's not really what they are for. There are very few games even written to work with Macs.

Anybody get the chance to play the NHL 17 Closed Beta?

It was great. The new HUT sets are going to draw in a lot more people. EASHL is 100 times better. It definitely won't get dry like it did last year.

The game play is better. The poke check has improved and become more accurate. But the best of it all was the hitting. Its more realistic and harder to lineup a hit but when you hit your opponent he goes down and doesn't get back up and grab the puck like its no big deal.

NHL17 will be the XBO version of NHL14.

Eh, I still felt gameplay was choppy. Vision control is not working the way I feel like it should. Pokecheck were definitely more effective, maybe overpowered. Don't like the new net-front defensive battles. Menus are still style over substance/usability and are slow to respond. I like the re-addition of a soundtrack (and one that doesn't completely suck, at that), and as an OTP guy some of the EASHL customization, but it's incomplete; still a lot more they can incorporate. Matchmaking still sucks really badly. The few new player builds available are okay--"hitting sniper", "two-way dangler", "jumbo playmaker", and PMD--but if you're gonna limit the ability to customize details like specific attributes and height/weight, they have a long way to go for it to be anywhere near as satisfying as 360 EASHL for me.

Well honestly last years beta was awful and i was worried it was going to carry over to the final product but it didn't so I'm hoping that with this amount of feed back this year's will be one worth spending the money on..... Hopefully

Also on the new builds i felt like the Jumbo player maker and the PMD were the two best.

But i also agree they still have a lot of work to do but at least they're progressing.

Beautiful

I'm still disappointed that it isn't Trench Warfare Simulator 2016 for the sheer hilarity of a game like that, but eh, still looks good.

As for NHL 17, I agree with most of what PH said. I personally am hyped most for creation coming back, I would do that for hours.

NHL 17 beta is garbage, IMO. First NHL game I will not be purchasing since who even knows. Think I've had every one since NHL 94. Same game since '15. Whole development team needs a complete overhaul.

I absolutely hated the hitting in '16. I could hardly ever line someone up...and when I did 9 times out of 10 I just kind of bounced off them. Perhaps it was too easy in '15 (not that I felt it was) but they definitely overcompensated last year. Besides scoring goals or making a sick pass, throwing a monster hit was a highlight of the game and they totally killed that.

If only my PC could handle 4K@60fps :(

Would require a heck of a machine. It looks glorious though.

There can't be that many rigs that can do that. I mean the new GTX 1070 can't even get most games to run at 30fps @ 4k. Perhaps if you SLI a pair you might get close. lol
