Recently bought the Quake 1 remaster on Series S from Night Dive Studios. I am playing mouse and keyboard despite being on console.
I never actually played Quake when I was younger. I have been a much bigger fan of Doom throughout the years, both for the original 3 (Not Doom 3, but Doom, Doom 2 and Final Doom) as well as the masses of custom fan-made WADS. I think maybe the murky visuals and browns and greys of Quake turned me off versus the vibrant colors of Doom. And the fact that the original Doom's combat is just endlessly fun. If you have never played a custom WAD from great mappers like Skillsaw, Erik Alm, Ribbiks, Insane_Gazebo, Yugiboi, etc. I highly suggest it. You will laugh at how well Doom has aged cause of the fan community.
However, here I am. I have beaten episode 1 and on the second level of episode 2 on Nightmare. This game is a 10. I think it took all these years and the updated resolutions and visuals to realize it, but clearly I wasnt picking up what ID was putting down back then. This game was comically ahead of its time. The looks, the enemies, the level design, the visuals, the weapons. It feels so damn good to play. Even on the console with the mouse and keyboard. I am having a blast and I am very excited to play the 2 Machine Games expansions for it. They look great. Spring-boarding off this I am absolutely going to get the Quake 2 remake as well. I think it took a while for the technology to catch up with the vision ID had for these 2 games back then.
On a side note, I play mouse and keyboard on my Series S cause it has replaced my gaming PC at my desk. Takes up so little space, super quite, more energy efficient, and runs games so well. I only have a 1080p monitor and the 4k TV in the living room is for more narrative driven games, whereas this is more for shooters. Here to hoping mouse and keyboard support come to more ID and Night Dive games on console. They do such a good job.
