So they are saying the next gen consoles will be able to support 8k and up to 120 fps. Obviously those figures are mutually exclusive, right? I mean it would be impressive if they could hit 120 fps at 4k. Even that seems ambitious if they are supporting ray tracing.
Yes. Getting 4k with 120fps with ray tracing would be incredibly impressive if the consoles could do it. I don't think they'll do 8k/120fps. That's a bit much.

From all the rumors/news, it looks like the next gen consoles will release at a point where higher end PC's are at now.

But that happens with most console generation leaps. It'll release at in the higher end of hardware, and then dwindle in relevance until the next gen comes out.

Side note: I am incredibly excited for Zen 2 to release next month. My computer needs a solid CPU/MOBO upgrade (4th gen Intel chip right now) and prices are going to DROOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPPPPP on Zen+ CPU/MOBO stock. Will wait for benchmarks from third-parties though.

So basically it’s a remake of the demo that came out a year before the game. Lol

Midgar portion of the game was cool don’t get me wrong but once you got on the world map it was when the classic FF feel came into play, imo. I hope they can get the entire game done.

I mean so they will be leaving out Cid, Cloud’s and Red XIII (Nanaki’s) home town, among other parts which played a critical part of the story ? Don’t know if I’m still that excited. They need to do the entire game or at least most of it, not just Midgar.

Just picked up the original on sale and decided to revisit the world. Personally, I'd love the ability to expand/explore Midgar a bit more. I love the aesthetic of that section of the game.

As someone who owns both a PS4 and an XB1, the highlight of E3 was the idea of full backwards compatability for the XB1. Knowing that any game that is/will be playable on the XB1 is a big sales point for me. I like going back and revisiting old games, just like I enjoy revisiting old books or movies.

Hoping PS 5 follows suit.

I just downloaded it for Switch. Just got out of Midgar. When I think of it, Midgar is such a small portion of the overall game, so it kinda makes sense to have a whole game focused on Midgar. So much opportunity to go through all the sectors and whatnot. But when you go on the world map and visit the 1st town, it's classic FF right there. Love that.

If you do everything possible, yeah its nothing.

If you just run through the game trying to finish it, it's actually a decent chunk of it, like 25-30% of it. Lots of the other towns you visit along the way either aren't required or involve very short stays - Costa Del Sol for instance, is like a few minutes if you don't go running around and Ft. Condor can also be really quick depending on how you handle the battle.

No joke though, 75-80% of that game is basically Midgar, Junon (with boat ride), Cosmo Canyon, Nibelheim, Icicle Inn/North Crater provided that you don't do all of the extra stuff.

Just wait until you get to parachute into that bitch!

Personally I don't care all that much about backwards compatibility but I can see why many do. I'm fine with it as long as it isn't otherwise holding back the console.

If they can hit 4k/60fps consistently with ray tracing I think that would be a good baseline.

Speaking of computer upgrades, my laptop died and i need to buy something. What would you suggest as a desktop replacement? I won't be traveling with it much...or at all.

If you want to build something, I'd hold off until mid-July when Zen 2 chips release and prices drop.

That being said, if you're not in the mood to wait/don't want to build something, you can always find good pre-built machines. Just plug in the individual parts on pcpartpicker.com to make sure you aren't getting ripped off. It's one thing if the price is reasonably higher due to service fees and whatnot, but more often than not the price on pre-builts will be astronomically higher than the sum of the parts inside. And also check for a reputable power supply.

If you are interested in building, check out the r/buildapc community on Reddit. Very helpful bunch.

But you can get pretty much get through most things are good quality with a baseline of:
  • Zen+ CPU from AMD/Coffee Lake CPU from Intel
  • Motherboard that fits said CPU
  • RX 500 series GPU from AMD or GTX 1000 series GPU from NVidia
  • Mix of 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD
  • 16GB RAM
  • 650W power supply

Thanks. I think my days of building pcs is over. Plus, I like the flexibility of a laptop, even if it is unlikely it ever leaves my apartment.

I like a mix. As a family console, we have more than 120 games on XB1, and probably another 40 on PS4. This includes compilations, backwards compatible, etc. So to have to leave all those games behind, or have four consoles around the house, is a major PITA.

Having said that, I look forward to a number of games coming soon:

The Outer Worlds
Trials of Mana
FF7 remake
CyberPunk 2077
SW Jedi Fallen Order

Yeah if your building days are done, I'd still recommend looking at what parts are relevant for gaming nowadays and then search for pre-builts. You can also go to companies like iBuyPower who will build it for you, but their prices are a bit higher than normal.

Do a bit of searching to see what's relevant and then make sure you aren't being gauged on prices.

I get it. My xbox is essentially my NHL XX console. If I had a library of games I'd feel the same way.

Thanks again. But how does that help when shopping for a laptop?

Since this is a video game thread, if any of you venture up to Rochester NY I recommend the Strong Museum. It is a retro giant children's museum and video arcade. Everything from the early days of toys and tv . It's interactive like every other children's museum . Then on the 2nd floor there it is . A room full of all the old pinball machines you grew up playing and you get to play them. Could have been 50 machines . Then another big area with all the old video arcade games you grew up playing at the supermarket, roller skating rink ,or game room at the mall and you can play with them. Asteroids, Paperboy, all the old karate games , the racing games , they were all there . Anyway that place is fun for a 2 year old or an 82 year old. There were also displays behind glass of all the old action figures and board games , scooters , just everything an older person had as a kid was there. Just a ton of fun. Then before we left there was a retro diner in the museum. For all the old schoolers this museum is a must see if you ever get up that way .

Ah yes FFVII ... god how I wish I had the time to immerse myself in such a manner again. Timeless classic.

I like old-school stuff, I don't mind bad graphics in 2019 or whenever.

Atm I'm playing M&B Warband lol

Graphics can be neat, but ultimately they're not what keeps a game relevant over time. The really good games immerse you in the experience and hook you. It's why games like FF7, Knights of the Old Republic, Zelda, a lot of work associated with Sid Meier or Will Wright, etc. remain popular decades after their debuts.

Right now, with my limited free time before I embark on a new fiscal year with multiple clients, I'm playing a wine making tycoon game called Terroir on my surface, and FF7 on my XB1.

One game is essentially pixel art, and the other is older than any just about all of our prospects drafted in the last three years.
