This leads credence to the idea that as men age they either wind up smoking meat or brewing beer as a hobby.

I think this one isn't given enough credence in retrospect. For me it was peaky.

This is so accurate.

Honestly, my opinion of country music when legends like Cash, Willie, Hank Williams, etc...were singing compared to today's country music could not be anymore contrast. This generation of commercialized country music may be my least favorite genre while the rebel days of country is one of my favorite genres of music.

I think part of it is the 'algorithm' (right word?) music companies used to make their stars (look like this, sing like this, follow this melody, write these types of songs) has played a huge role in the saturation of country music and other genres. But, also, the guys who used to sing country music lived much tougher lives and were really about that cowboy lifestyle, so their songs reflected the struggles of their lives and also the lifestyle they glorified.

A lot of today's artists come from very different lifestyles. They may be from the south, but quite a few of them are from suburban areas. They aren't hardened like the men back then, and I've noticed a lo of the artists I enjoy listening to the most had a ton of trauma in their lives.

Bo Burnham has a great parody of commercial country -

It is very much about how people who are making millions on the music don't live the life.

Day 11/25 of songs for Christmas countdown: today’s song is Gaudete by British synth-pop duo Erasure. This version was released in 2013, but the original version was released some time in the 16th century. It first appeared in writing in 1582 in a Nordic hymn book, but it’s unknown when it was actually written. This song is in Latin, which would probably be the only song in Latin that makes it to your playlist. There are 4 versions (this one, a capella, and 2 club remixes) of this song, but this is the original.

It was a weird scene when Chet and RCA were putting strings and choirs on everything and Bakersfield essentially had to tell the nation that it was okay to honky-tonk. I love Chet but that whole era was pretty cringe.

The new country stuff isn't aimed at me so I don't f*** with it. That's not a knock at all either, just recognition that I'm not the target audience.

Day 12/25 of songs for Christmas countdown: today’s song is It’s Christmas Time Again by acoustic horror punk artist Harley Poe. It was released in 2006 on a Christmas music compilation for a small record label in Indiana that showcased Indiana artists. This is an amusing song about a murderous rampaging Santa. While there’s no swearing in it, this song is slightly NSFW due to the dark lyrics.

Day 13/25 of songs for Christmas countdown: today’s song is His Favourite Christmas Story by Oklahoman pop rock band Capital Lights. The band started as a screamo band in 2000, before switching to pop rock in 2003. They were a band until 2008, broke up, and reformed from 2010-2012. This song was their final release in 2008.

Day 14/25 of songs of Christmas countdown: today’s song is Home For Christmas by Cavo. They’re a rock band from St. Louis. They formed in 2000, and are still together with moderate commercial success. This song was released in 2010 and is a country influenced rock ballad.

I should have checked in here. I woulda done a 25 days of songs as well.

Here's one:

I'll throw this in with the requisite warning that along with more traditional fare, there are songs about having sex with snowmen and the like:

I’ll also add that given the holiday season is coming up, and some people might be hosting Christmas parties, feel free to DM me for a list of the songs. 98% of them are available on Spotify, 100% on YouTube, and the ones that aren’t on Spotify I’ve replaced them with a different version of the song.

The only requests I have is that you do not share the playlist with any other user here, nor comment about an upcoming song until I mention it.

@Old Navy Goat im mostly looking at you here

I could use the list as a change for the bars. Now the boys have a metal Xmas blend and some TSO they pop out for 15 minutes or so at a time

Ok. I’ll send you that playlist tomorrow. Only because the one song I’m posting is not available on Spotify, but is on YouTube (it’s a mashup/remix of one artist) and I’m making that current list on Spotify.

Also two of the songs aren’t on Spotify, so if you wanna make a YouTube list of everything I’ve posted, feel free to do it and tell your guys to play it

Day 15/25 of songs for Christmas countdown: today’s song is Chicago based EDM duo Jumpsmokers with their mashup of Oh Santa and All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey. This song was released as a B-side to their remix of Oh Santa in 2010 but only as a Soundcloud download. It’s definitely a twist on a song that you hear everywhere this time of year.

Day 16/25 of songs for Christmas countdown: today’s song is Deck The Halls (I Hate Christmas) by Zebrahead. This song was released as a promo 7” in 1999, sent to radio stations. At the time of this release, the band was leaning heavily into a combination of nu-metal and punk for their sound. There were two versions of this song and this one is the unedited version. The song is SFW as the only difference between the two is the radio version doesn’t have the intro or outro.
