Speculation: The 2026-27 Roster Speculation Thread: Summer Edition - Throw in All The Oars, We're Trading for Battleships

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
is there any chance we could move Byram and get a starting goalie as part of the return? one that isn't 33 years old with bad knees?

Murashov came to mind since Pit has a bunch of goalies in the pipeline and could use a LHD.

I just want to see we made a trade and celebrate because I think "Wow - that's a great trade and we didn't give up too much for that!" and not "Why did we have to throw in that as well? Seems like an overpay..." or even worse "We traded for WHO? And gave up WHAT? Ugh."

The pieces all have to fit together. The ask on the trade board from Jets fans started with UPL, Helenius, and pick 20. How does that trade help Buffalo to re-sign Tuch?

Hellebuyck makes $8.5M. If I go on puckpedia and just make the Hellebuyck trade, that puts Tuch's new contract in almost the impossible task list. At least not without disassembling half the Sabres roster.

That's why Sabres fans are countering with Norris. The money makes sense and it allows the team to make other moves, possibly re-sign Tuch, and not detonate a grenade in the middle of the roster. That probably doesn't work for Jets fans either. So be it.

Buffalo is way better off staying the course and adding a goalie later in the process. The Sabres also get $4.5M back next season from Skinner's buyout.
We would have to take some cap back, like Greenway

If Helleybuck is in goal, we beat MTL pretty easily I think. 5 or 6 games max. He's only 3/4 mil more than UPL. Greenway and UPL's cap # equals Helleybuck. Sign me up as long as it doesn't cost Helenius. Something around UPL, maybe a Krebs/prospect and a 1st.

All of our players immediately improve with Helleybuck in net.

Go fill in some cheap 4th liners that can help on the PK with Carrick.

With expansion coming soon, a consideration for Jarmo is to figure out who he can protect when it comes. Can he protect all the young guys that we (fans) don't want to trade away now?

FWIW, Weekes mentioned we’re interested in Bob.

I think those of you who want us to keep the status quo at goaltender might need to adjust your expectations for this offseason. (Not a commentary on whether that’s right or wrong, just that it seems Jarmo wants to improve there).

Time must heal all wounds because a month ago people were saying they never wanted to see UPL in a Sabres jersey again.

What about Ostlund?
The Sabres don't need a goaltender right now, I don't even know where all this hype came from. We won the division with a combo of UPL and Lyon. We have a bigger problem at forward. As you have mentioned we are getting close to the cap so we need players like Helenius, Ostlund and Kulich to play on ELC's.

It's insane to me that any of our future would be traded for a 33 year old goalie for Chevy's price over what are actual needs are right now.

How is adding 8.5 million to our situation helpful in a position that's not needing to be touched right now.

Honest question: Are the Jets in a win today situation?
Jets fans, sure. We dont see this team as contenders even though we were the best team a year ago. Management like most in the league are in win now, think a small move can put us back on top.

Maybe they pivot to Bob if Chevy's price is too high or he is insisting in Helenius. But if they won't pay Tuch, I can't see them paying Bob either 🤷‍♂️

Funny note on wgr this morning mentioning Hellebuyck would probably be the biggest selling Sabres jersey if they got him

I don't want Helly either, but Bob would be disastrous.

38 years old before the season starts, expecting big $ and term as well, coming off his statistically worst season. Hard pass.
If you get him at 2 years at 8AAV and trade UPL in a package for something it's only a 3.2 million difference and we give up absolutely no futures.

If we are desperate for a goalie which apparently Jarmo is for some reason. Bob as a stop gap is better for me than giving up premium assets for Helle.

I don't want neither but I think Bob is the path of least resistance since we give up no assets and don't have to deal with Chevy.

I still don't know why we need a goaltender tho.

A cap dump (Greenway) would have to come back. So you would make cap space while upgrading in net. Every management feels like the can get closer or possibly win. Upgrading in arguably the most important spot probably has management feeling they could contend.

Helle didnt regress last year. The Jets battled with injuries and poor free agent pickups. Stanley was 1ld at one point... Morrissey was injured, Samberg lost a lot of time, Pionk was down 30 games, Miller missed most the year, even Fluery was hurt. These dont help Helle numbers.

Using Schenn alone hurt us the most. Using a rookie (Salomonsson) over schenn over the season stastically would have gave us 9 more points, thats how bad Schenn was. You add in the Nyquist bust and maybe toews and our youth to take most of the year to make some steps. We also had injuries with Perfetti, Lowry, nino and vlad.

People think of that OT goal and come to the conclusion they have a goalie issue.
When they could just as well blame Tage for not taking the shot earlier or Dahlin for the turnover that lead to the goal against.

Overtime is designed to cause costly individual mistakes to be decisive.

The truth is this team including the goalies overperformed throughout the season.
And UPL may just as well be the better goalie than Hellbuick as soon as next season.
