I have not watched him play at all, as you know, and maybe, in spite of the reasonable success it appears he had as a draft eligible player, he has some terrible flaw to his game.

Who knows, certainly not me, but it seems worthy of a swing in the fifth round, and the Penguins certainly thought so.

Regardless, Phelan will never play a game in the NHL, and probably won't even play in the AHL. You know it, I know it. It's a low ceiling, low floor pick. Serves no purpose.
You can say that about every late pick and be right most of the time, it doesn't mean you actually know anything about who will actually make it.

sure but someone who is almost certain to not make it also having a low ceiling even if they somehow do is a pretty brutal combination

You realize that that is your opinion of him, and the scouts have a different opinion of him, right?

If the Red Wings didn't draft him in the 5th, would he have been drafted at all? No.

I'm guessing the Red Wings had a different opinion of him because no other teams really spent even a minute considering him, and thus didn't have an opinion at all.

Way too many North Americans! Stick with what you have had success with, Europeans. No Russians, no Fins, only 2 Swedes. What has happened here? 5 defenseman and 2 goalies? I don't like day 2 at all. Steve needs to have everyone but Hakkan shut the f#%$ up at the draft table.

It seems our scouting department initially had ideas who to choose in the 2bd round but all of then gone with first few picks. And then they had no backup plan.

Draper needs to go.

I gotta say considering the amount of picks and opportunities we had this is an absolutely disaster draft. I have so many issues with it it’s not even funny. Not drafting a goal scoring prospect is a shockingly bad move.

I remember saying, I just wanted Detroit to take all centers.. Every pick. If they don't work out at center move them to the wing. Why do I have a feeling that strategy for how ridiculous it was, actually would have been better then what happened today? I'm not a big hater. I am genuinely curious to see how this group pans out. If a couple of these defenseman hit. You literally could have the best defense in the entire league.
