If the Red Wings didn't draft him in the 5th, would he have been drafted at all? No.

I'm guessing the Red Wings had a different opinion of him because no other teams really spent even a minute considering him, and thus didn't have an opinion at all.
How could you possibly know that?

how about we split the difference and draft a guy that would at least someday be good enough to win the USHL's version of that if he was allowed to play there until he was 50?
Was the defenseman who won that award in the USHL picked in this draft? You should know. You have your crystal ball with you, right?

ironically he was picked only a few spots above Phelan

he had 10 times as many points this year as Phelan did

I mean you might as well ask how Phelan's defensive game projects to the NBA or NFL because he has about as much chance of making it to those as he ever does the NHL
Just to be clear, you have never seen him play a game, let alone seen a single youtube clip of this guy, right?

The board is meltingggggggggg, and I am here for it. Let's wait and see, or follow @Frk It and have a well thought out discussion piece per draftee. Otherwise we are all just mad because we assumed we would draft offense this draft, and because they did not, we are now losing our minds

And you assess that some random 5th rounder has a low or high ceiling based on...?
Everyone in the 5th round has a low ceiling. That is the very nature of being a 5th rounder. If you are really good, you are taken well before the 5th round.

"And I took that personally" - K Kaprizov

Good decision by the Stars to take the gritty, gym rat defenseman with .25 ppg in the USHL a couple picks earlier.

fifth rounders (and later) can have value if you take them seriously
Since Yzerman has taken over as GM in 2019, there have been roughly 0 impactful NHL players drafted in the 5th round or later.

I think you are vastly overrating your ability to identify who we should be drafting at that point.

8 points in 21 games for Elmer Soderblom in his first year in NA?
