Was reading a mainboard thread and some other stuff and keep seeing Denton Mateychuk pop up for our pick, part of it probably because he is from Winnipeg lol.

Still, 64p in 65 games, third on his team in scoring for Moose Jaw. Any WHL watchers seen em this year?

He's been pretty good for Moose Jaw. He's rated right around where the Jets would pick. I'd probably rather go with Korchinski if he was available, though.

Fairly typical scouting report for a guy his size on the backend. Really smart player who is a good skater. His defensive game is poor but he makes up for it by moving the puck really well. I don't think he did himself any favors at the u18s either. I like Korchinski better right now but I think he could be gone by the time we pick

Great family and just about the smartest and most dedicated kid you could imagine. Think he’d rather get picked by Pittsburgh though haha (that’s his team but I’m sure he’d be ecstatic to be a Jet too).

Comparable to me would be Morrissey, maybe a bit faster at the top end and a bit more crafty with the puck, less of a shot.

I went to the draft in Philly the year we took Ehlers and it is the most boring live event I think I have ever witnessed. Day 1 badly needs a tv feed in the building to pick up the interviews. Day #2 is totally unwatchable live. There is no point in being there unless you have a kid being drafted.

This is very much a made for TV event.
The NFL Draft looks like it would be fun live. Maybe the NHL draft should emulate that?

I remember the person who spoke on behalf of the bills when their pick was made. It was like a wrestling promo.

Really liking what I’m reading about Gauthier and McGroarty, but will either still be available at 14?

McGroaty I think would definitely be available, Gauthier probably not.

At 14 I'd rather go BPA and I don't think McGroaty is likely to be BPA there.

One dark horse prospect I'm keeping my eye on is Owen Pickering. I know, another LHD, but he's 6'4" and has some offensive upside. I've seen him as anywhere from mid-first to late-first/early-second from mock drafts.

Raw talent seems to be there, but there's some aspects to his game he'll need work on.

If it matters at all: he's from St. Adolphe, MB.

EDIT: Not someone I'd grab in the first round, but I might trade up in the 2nd to grab him if he's still on the board

Everything I have heard after the u18s is McGroaty might have moved up in the rankings. I can't wait for Bob's full list to see where guys in the mid 1st are at now

I'm relying on the past rankings so you're probably right he's moved up. Pronman has him at 19 right now but the other rankings I saw are a couple months old at least and they have him in the 25-32 range.

Aren’t there questions about McGroatys skating? I’d be down with Cutter at 14OA but think he goes before that

I haven't really seen much if any of McGroaty. Pronman rates his skating as below NHL average, but still quick enough to play in the NHL. Perfetti's skating was also supposedly below average so it may not be a big hindrance to McGroaty.

I like Frank Nazar and he's all over the map on Prospect Ratings. Ideal play for the Jets! Looks too good to be there at 14.

Do you mind if I join you on this. He is one of the more dynamic kids and one of my top choices for centres that are ranked in and around 14. Reminds me a bit of Seth Jarvis at the same age.

What's the story with this guy Liam Öhgren at eliteprospects.com ? Those Swedish J20 league stats are some the most eye popping I have ever seen for a player in his draft year, the dude is nearly 2 PPG and over 1 Goal per game, and is a +41 in just 30 games (no one else on the team is even close). Those are some cartoonish video-game like numbers. Hasn't produced much in the SHL but icetime for young players is pretty inconsistent in that league so hard to take much from it. And it's not like he's undersized either... listed at a solid 6'1 187lbs. I am surprised a player with numbers like that is only ranked mid-late 1st round pick. What's the catch with him?

In trying to guess who the Jets pick I wouldn't discount guys with skating issues. They have shown no reluctance in the past. Heinola, Lucius, Perfetti. Of course Lucius and Perfetti kind of dropped, so maybe the Jets don't take them if they picked a little earlier.

Nazar is a RW.
