Because he's not predicting where they're going like Bob McKenzie's scout's poll, he's predicting where they project as an NHL player.
He still gets it wrong more than he does right. He drops guys down every year and more often than not the guys he drops down still become very good NHL players.

He hasn't had a job with an NHL team in nearly 20 years and it isn't because he decided he didn't want to work in the NHL anymore. He isn't as smart as he pretends to be.

I'd love to see a follow up to people's draft rankings, season predictions, opinion pieces, etc. 5-10 years later. No one ever really looks back to see who knows what they're talking about and who doesn't.

The last thing I will say about Craig Button and his ability to evaluate young players is that you only need to look at his time as the GM of the flames to see how bad he is at it.

The guy traded away a 23 year old JS Giguere for a 2nd round pick to protect Fred Brathwaite in the 2000 expansion draft, who only played 49 games with the Flames after that.

He put Martin St Louis on waivers, left him unproteced in the expansion draft and the bought him out after he didnt get claimed.

He traded Marc Savard for a player who never played an NHL game.

He is an old hockey dinosaur who was out of touch with the game 20 years ago.

Should we be picking a D here? Pickering? I'm just thinking of perfetti, Lucius, ehlers, Connor, Dubois, vs heinola, Samberg, Stanley, morrissey...one area just seems a lot more set than the other but I'd be curious on some scouting reports on the D as I don't know enough.

Whoever they pick at 14 will likely be a few years away so it doesn't make sense to consider current needs or even projected needs a couple years out. Half the guys in either of those groups could be gone by the time the pick makes an impact.

According to Pronman, Geekie is one of the more divisive players in scouting industry.

What's up everyone? Took a break for this season team was just making me angry. Had to come back for the draft though. Hopefully we get some more lotto luck!

Good to see you back Dax.

Now who do we want to pick at 14?

No luck here
Are you going to drop back around to share your thoughts on some of the top prospects? @jimsabo21 has been doing some solid passionate posting on prospects but the more the merrier.

Don’t be a stranger I realize our team and organization are currently the laughing stock of the league for how we are imploding publicly and the main board thread worthy bizzarre Scheifele end of the season WWE heel promo….Ok and the fact HF Jets board is a toxic waisteland that Mel Gibson could make a post appolcolipic movie franchise out of but common Dax other than that what reason is there to not want to hang out? :sarcasm:

Been hearing Ryan Chesleys name....big RHD looked great at the U18 recently. Certainly caught my eye. Most guys had him in the 2nd, but he will rise into the 1st

As for MTL and NJ, depending on the return, I look at moving down.

Murat mocked Frank Nazar to the Jets at 14 in the Athletic's right after the lottery mock.

Not a lot of commentary from Pronman and the anonymous NHL scouts, other than some scouts thinking it 14 is too low for him and some thinking it was too high.

In case someone is bored and wants to watch Bettman. The drawing that we didn't see on TV. And note: At 9:00 we get to see that Bettman really is " The Count "

When someone builds four more five star hotels within walking distance of the rink. Winnipeg isn’t getting any big events until that happens, and it’s not happening.

I believe the schedule runs like this:

2023 - Vegas
2024 - New York
2025 - Vegas (but New York is a close second)
2026 - New York
2027 - Vegas
2028 - No draft, earth is locked in nuclear winter
2029 - Winnipeg (the only city not seething in various epitopes of Cesium, Iodine and Strontium)
2030 - Vegas
2031 - New York

I went to the draft in Philly the year we took Ehlers and it is the most boring live event I think I have ever witnessed. Day 1 badly needs a tv feed in the building to pick up the interviews. Day #2 is totally unwatchable live. There is no point in being there unless you have a kid being drafted.

This is very much a made for TV event.

My top 10 list is

1. Shane Wright C - I think he is a pretty safe pick at number 1 but I am not sure if he becomes a high end point producer more like a Jonathan Toews type in the NHL.

2. Juraj Slafkovsky LW - I am intrigued. Something about his toolset excites me. Potential big play big pro winger for someone. I think he will do really well in the NHL in NHL sized rinks

3. Logan Cooley C - All the tools to be a high end point producing center.

4. Simon Nemec D - Really smooth RHD. These top end right shot D are becoming more and more valuable. He has all the tools to be a top guy

5. Joakim Kemell - RW - Pure sniper. Yes a finnish sniper. Best pure scorer in the draft

6. David Jiricek - D - Another RHD. I think if he didn't get hurt early in the year he might be the top 3. A guy I would love the Jets to have

7. Matt Savoie - RW - I think he will produce in the NHL some day. A play driving winger. More of a passer then a shooter.

8. Cutter Gauthier - LW - Big skilled and fast. NHL teams covet these types. They think power winger and he is likely that at the pro level. More a Krieder then a Tom Wilson type

9. Frank Nazar - C - A skilled Center/Wing. I think scouts like his tools more then say Howard.

10. Danila Yurov -RW -Skilled smart winger. I live Yurov since I first saw him at the u18s a year ago. Guy is a bit under the radar because he is a late birthday.

Seems Savoie might fall a bit, wouldn't that be something to get him at 14. He's a very Kyle Conner esc player.
That would be great. I noticed that while some lists have Connor Geekie going anywhere from 8-12 or so, our old friend Craig Button has him 31st. That would be another nice pick if we could manage it.
