Bucc: "Nashville is a team that's really teetering. What do you think?"
Whoever that guy is: "They're kind of in-between..."
Bucc: "Yeah that's what I meant..."

No complaints from me, two huge needs potentially addressed. Who knows what they look like 2-3 years from now, but both make sense and I like Cossa as the first goalie off the table.

What feels so weird is that I would have been happy with a move up for Cossa....if Wallstedt was off the board. My gut reaction is feeling pretty sick about this first round, after months of watching these kids and reading draft reports and watching interviews and looking forward to this night. Instead, Im in a little bit of shock. I guess we could have drafted drapes' cousin, so things could have been worse.

I have to think the front office doesn't like this draft class too much. Seems like we're going to try to grab a couple guys we do like and move picks for other things.

Not a fan of grabbing a goalie in the first, but if we don't really rate other players it makes sense.

I am in the camp of - I don't like taking goalies in the first round. Outside of knowing that there is a generational talent at the position; which I'm not sure either of these guys projected to be that, it's kind of like Running Backs in the NFL for me. The difference between good and acceptable is just too blurry, too many other factors, and too short lived. Like you definitely notice when you have bad goaltending, but it's harder to tell between acceptable and good but once that bear minimum is set it becomes a "eh" situation.

All that being said...I can't hate this pick for no other reason than for one incredibly random and magical moment, at least one Red Wing Fan was absurdly happy. We all had our ride or die guys - a lot of them were pipe dreams, I stood proudly on Svechkov Hill. But @tsweeney - you beat all the odds and got your guy and not only that, your team moved mountains and assets to get that guy which I can only imagine how good that feels and how incredible you feel about your team at this exact moment.

I don't hate the pick, but I hate the fact that Stevie paid to move up. Outbidding yourself move.

That's just the icing.

Dallas has Oetinger and need impact forwards.
New York has 2 young goalies and need forward depth desperately
St. Louis has that one guy they won a cup with whose name I forget. They need impact forwards and D.
Winnipeg has Hellebuyck. They need depth forwards and reliable depth D.
Nashville drafted Askarov last season. Why would they go for another first round goalie when they're hurting everywhere else?
Minnesota has Kaapo Kahkonen who is their 3rd or 4th best prospect. Where they're hurting is on defense.

Edmonton at 20 is the first team that would likely take one of Cossa or Wallstedt. Knowing Tyler Wright and Ken Holland it would have been Cossa. Knowing that I'd let them.

Boston could also use a goalie prospect with Rask being in his mid 30s but they're a wheeling dealing franchise. They'll get their goalie one way but where they really need help right now and 3 years from now is on defense.

I hate this pick.

You'd figure he was getting Svechkov if he was moving up. I hate the trade, not the pick.

Wasn't paying full attention to the draft because I had 4 different people messaging me at once, but he had my hopes up there for a minute.

i'm not really big on appeals to authority but it always strikes me as silly when people whine about trading up to get someone they want(or not trading back or whatever) and say they could have just gotten them later

GMs talk to each other guys, someone like Yzerman has a much better idea of what the other teams are thinking of doing with their picks than we do....like it isn't even comparable

Is paying to move up really that bad if based on all available data the trade value is pretty much a wash? I know we used to move down often which is nice getting more picks, but those day 2 picks don't usually turn into much.

Right on cue, Kenny trades down like the good old times.

Well, I hate the pick but whether I like it or not Cossa is Red Wings property now. I'm hoping the kid proves me wrong and does well for the Wings.

With how in depth we look into Sweden I think trading up and picking Cossa over Wallstedt speaks volumes to how they compare the players.

No doubt. There's something they like far more in Cossa. I was hoping Yzerman might give us some insight on that mini interview there but it was just normal fluff about getting a good goalie.
