He's younger and has lower cap hit, but his contract is two years longer.
Their contracts both end in summer of 2024. But if you look at underlying numbers for both of them, they're extremely similar.

If they weren't labeled it'd be tough to tell them apart

I mean he is though. He isn't a top pairing D but he is THE top pairing LD on this team

While this is technically true, his salary is wandering into 1st pairing territory and If this team is eventually going to compete for a championship, ideally it will not be with Skjei in that slot.

If the Rangers have a guaranteed window to not only get out of Brady's contract now while he is 25 and has 4 years left, but to get back a first round pick, you do it before his age and term start looking unpalatable to other teams.

Before Namestnikov was traded I mentioned that I’d be interested in what he returned in order to size Strome’s and Fast’s current value. Well, I’m not impressed and there’s no reason to believe that Fast would return anymore in a trade. So there...

If we do not get better over the next 4 years it has nothing to do with Kreider and more for the fact that all our young players currently in the system have not progressed.
Not mutually exclusive... it could be that we have a hole at center or LD and can't fill it due to having no cap space because the kids did progress and got paid (deservedly) and yet we needed to go to FA to fill that hole but couldn't.

I like the moves we made. I was all for keeping Kreider. Would I have preferred only 6 years? Of course but he did take less money annually. As for Skjei I loved when we drafted him and his first two years but he has regressed since he signed that long term deal so we shed salary and gained a first rounder

I want to see the details of Kreider's extension before casting any judgment on it. If there is indeed a modified NTC that kicks in after year 3 or 4 then its hard to complain about this at all.
Not trading Fast is a little puzzling but perhaps last minute transactions are still coming in, lol.
Very happy with trading Skjei for either of Carolina's 1st rounders. Gorton had me thinking he was waiting until the draft to move him. TDA moves over and they pair him with Trouba, Fox or even Smith?
Guessing Georgiev gets traded at the draft unless Lundqvist decides to hang them up.

Not what I meant. I meant I wouldn’t argue that the Rangers without Kreider would be better than with him.

It's peak NYR HFboards. Literally every GDT & post game "Skjei is trash", Gorts trades him for a 1st "OMG why did we do that , we got fleeced" .Same ones complaining about the cap prior to the trade as well still can't make them happy.
How are you positive it's the same people? I didn't constantly dump on Skjei. "Fleeced" is definitely an over reaction, but I don't recall seeing that term. The cap is still a problem because Skjei still needs to be replaced. The other moves over the last 9 months have boldly stated we are going for it, so the left d doesn't really just get to marinate and wait for the kids to be ready in 2 or 3 seasons.

Just to be clear. Kreider for a 1.87 mil per year raise. I mean. This is a top line player. Freak athlete. 28 going on 29 and the premier net front powerplay presence in the league. 1.87 mil raise. 6.5 mil per. Not 9 mil. 6.5 mil in a league that’ll have a 90 mil cap in a couple years. Makes our number one center better. Electric chemistry and leadership.

I can’t even stomach the tears that we signed him my god.

in the process we moved out an extremely soft yet talented but soft long term deal in Brady Skjei a guy that just never lived up to his contract and had 4 more friggen years left!!!! We took no money back. We can now sign an absolute stud young dman in DeAngelo that will literally fight a grizzly bear for his teammates. Probably would do it for anyone just because he enjoys it.

This was always the best answer. Keep your best players move out your fringe ones. Fast should be gone as well. Hank will be gone. Maybe Staal. Cap won’t be an issue this summer.

I liked this... then I un-liked it, just to like it again.

Dump Smith/Staal if applicable. If HL doesn't retire its more than likely a buyout
