Trading Skjei for expensive roster players doesn't help the Rangers cap situation. It'll probably be for a pick, prospect, and maybe a depth defensemen like Fleury or Bean.

Bean is their top D prospect tearing it up in the AHL, Fleury was a 1st a draft or two ago and is also trending well. these arent depth dmen and arent getting added to a 1st

With Skjei, Slavin and Gardiner, there's no room for those guys. They need a LD and Bean hasn't even sniffed the lineup. Fleury has been bouncing in and out of the lineup for two seasons now. If they see Skjei as a staple in their top-4, they're both very much available.
