I like the look of the 2nd unit. Let Stepan run the thing with 3 viable shooting threats on the perimeter, and a big man in front of the net. They had a similar group out there at one point against Toronto and it was the best PP I had seen from this team in a long time.

Too many chiefs, not enough indians on the PP. Sometimes, you just need guys who will win one-on-one battles in order for a PP to get going. Pyatt and Nash need to be on there as they are the (2) who consistently are able to retrieve pucks down low.

I'd try

1st
Del Zotto - Stralman (on their off-sides)
Callahan - Richards - Nash

Have Del Zotto and Richards move around and switch spots frequently to confuse the defense (or subsequently themselves). Nash sets up for the one-timer, can come off the wall and draw attention and dish. Callahan in front and add a wrinkle setting up behind net at times, hes good there. Let Stralman shoot for christsakes, and he has some speed and can cover up if anything happens SH. Sounds so simple

2nd
MCDonagh - Girardi
Pyatt - Stepan - Gaborik

Take Gaborik off first unit. Let McD captain the PP with wristers from the point. Collapse on net using the timing play. Pyatt PARKS himself in front, Stepan on the half wall but dont let him have the puck for more than 2 seconds. Girardi sneaking in the back door like he used to in the Jagr days. Gaborik one times and steps to the slot for laser beams.

Lundqvist -

Head mans the puck for once, or at least comes out of the net and prevents clears from being picked up by the D behind the goal line. Doesnt go above hash marks though to prevent from the resulting brain fart of coming out of his crease for the first time or getting a trapezoid penalty. This could provide Rangers with an extra 30 seconds of off-zone PP time per game.

This team continues to play on the boards during a power play. Then, they lose the puck because it's more or less a 50/50 battle and it's an easy clear for the D. It's unfortunate because they don't have many players that can open up space for themselves which is what we need.

Watching other teams PP's, they move the puck quickly, don't hover along the boards like Hagelin, Boyle, etc. do, and work the puck down low, opening up space for the D to move in and dragging the forwards towards them. Either that, or they constantly feed someone with a booming shot, ala Stamkos, Ovy, Kovy, which we don't have.

This is also my biggest gripe. The opposition knows meanwhile that the Rangers will try to work puck down low or on the boards and then somehow stuff it in from in front. And since we have no one-timer threath, it's easy to defend against. Most of the time it leads to one-on-one battles at the boards and then the D clears, just like you said.

I mean look at the goal Malkin scored. Who on this team can shoot like that? Nobody.

Well yeah, that's exactly what I would like to see. We don't really even attempt that on the PP anymore.

But to prove my point, that video is from 2009 and we have 2013 so it's been a while if that's the only one you can find.

I know we've been struggling on the PP but it hit new heights last night when both the defensive pair and two wingers bumped into each other within a minute of each other... :shakehead

Everytime I watch the PP, it looks like the little rangers.

the pp woes are simple. its not the personel either. we have the horses. its 3 things.

1. we have no threat from the top. no one has a canon. without that threat, teams will cheat and then we default to the same ole "pass it around the perimeter team until we turn it over" pp.

2. guys that really dont get it. gaby continues to go behind the net or on the wrong wall where his shot is neutralized. in addition, no one seems to understand that one timers off cross ice feeds or set plays on the pp actually work.

3. when you cant bring the puck up ice and settle it down in the o zone, you are always gonna be in an unsettled situation where the play is dectated by the opposing pk pressure and that is usually forcing pucks to the wall where the pk can waste time and tire out the pp unit.

we just never seem to apply any sustained pressure.

as i said before, this pp fail will kill this team. we arent able to do much 5 on 5 so without the pp scoring, we lose. period.

Go with the umbrella and use Nash, Del Zotto and Gaborik for one timers. Have Richards and Pyatt play down low and around the net. Let them drop bombs.

Umbrella requires a lot of one timers. With the exception of Del Z, who has just recently started to shoot one timers; I don't see that any of those guys are going to be able to effectively run an umbrella.

I would say probably the biggest issue with the PP right now(outside of the lack of a triggerman); Our issues with breakouts and transitional play has direct ramifications to our PP.

If the Rangers could ever figure out a proper breakout transition, our PP would probably improve significantly. Just being able to penetrate the zone consistently would be big deal.

Ugh. Its the same ole problem and same ole conversation every year with this team. Then we get new players that should help out and it still isn't effective, every year it seems.

The Rangers probably make it to the finals by not having to go to two game 7's last year if they had a dangerous PP. They would probably have a winning record or at least a couple more points this season if they converted on a couple 5 on 3s. Its the one thing that has continued to hold this team back from really getting over the hump.

If this team wants to do anything special theyll need to figure this out, and quick.

Technically the Rangers had the 2nd best powerplay last post season if I'm not mistaken. ES scoring was the problem.

Also we need a hell of a lot more one timers off fast passes. Too bad no one on this team can handle passes like that besides Nash and Gabby.

So true.

You know we have a flawed 'system' when even the 5 on 3's are horrendous.... What's it going to take for upper management to replace the individual whose job it is to ensure our PP is effective? I am not a big fan of Sullivan. He strikes me as a hot-head who piggy backs on Tortorella's fiery attitude. Bottom line is that we can't fire the players so the next logical option is to replace the personnel (Sullivan) and bring someone in with different ideas and a fresh approach.

Right, and one thing I didn't realize, our big guns are all lefties.

I agree 100%.

Them trying to get in the zone takes 30 seconds. Forget it if they lose the possession and they need to reorganize, there goes a minute.

I was cracking up in the car earlier when NHL sirius came on and I heard them broadcasting a Montreal game. They were advertising the "Flower Play" which is some crap about buying flowers tying into the Power play I dunno it was some gimicky promotion. Jus hearing talk about a flower play though was great

Get Krieder on the first PP unit

shoots rockets

also richards doesnt really work at the point, and del zotto doesnt look so good out there either

i think stepan could qb it, or possibly Gilroy for an outside of the box idea

but get krieder some space and pucks will go in

the personel needs to be changed up because its clearly not working and hasnt worked for us in years
