I have zero problem with glen holding firm

This is team policy he's no more special then the guys that came before him in the same spot.

2 years 6 mil tops. If glen wants a bridge contract well here it is son. Don't get on glen or the fans badside at this point of your career. U can be a future captain here.

With Kadri signing last night, I think Stepan's deal gets done today. The Rangers will probably have to give him a little more than they intended, but it will be a 2 year deal.

Stepan IS more special than players like Callahan, Dubinsky, Anisimov, and Hagelin. He's closer to the Staal/McDonagh range, I see why he's holding firm. I do think it they bump up the cash he'll take a two year deal, though.

They just need to up the perks, like get him an autographed Sue Sylvester poster or something and cover his Rogaine costs.

Obviously he's very important to the team and I really like him, I think he'll cave pretty soon. Doesn't seem like a guy who can hold out too long, his agent has him convinced for the time being but eventually his desire to be with his team mates and not let the organization down well kick in.

With Kadri Signing last night the stepan deal needs just a little bump from Kadri's and it gets done
2 years 3.1/per gets it done today if sather offers it.

Kadri has played 99 NHL regular season games. 48 of them came in the lockout year. 41 in the first 2 years. Ron Wilson had no use for Kadri while Randy Carlyle loved Kadri. Stepan hasn't missed a single game in 3 years. 82,82 and 48. Kadri spent most of the first 2 years in the AHL.

Duchene and Couture had better numbers and were more prominent in their franchises their first three seasons and they took bridge deals...Stepan should do the same.

Stepan is by far and away my favorite New York Ranger.

There is no reason Glen should step away from a 2 year deal. If he holds out, he holds out. Understand it's a business for both sides, and Step is trying to make a livelihood. I mean, kid's got to afford living in New York City somehow :sarcasm:

Hold steady, Glen.

Just saw MDZ in TriBeCa getting into his car - training camp is here

Callahan and Hagelin will most likely miss the entire month of October. Brooks wrote about that today. Long term IR is 10 games and 24 days. Season begins October 1. 10 days and 24 days means the earliest Callahan and/or Hagelin could return is October 29th against the Islanders. The Rangers are worried about keeping extra forwards with Callahan and Hagelin not being available. The Rangers will need to do some juggling with their roster and cap. The Rangers could place one of them on long term IR and then shed the extra player(s) to be cap compliant. The Rangers have no choice but to pay Stepan more than they planned. Brooks wrote it was $2.75M-$3M. That was before Kadri.

I agree I won't hold it against him, just like I won't hold it against Sather and the Rangers for holding firm, but I'd like to see something get done soon because missing training camp with a new coach is a bad thing for everyone involved and at this point nothing good happens anymore.

That said I also don't really buy that holding out for contract stuff makes the Rangers mad at players and ready to trade them

I have no problem whatsoever with the way Sather bridges contracts. I love how he stands firm. You need that approach. Sather has shown he will bend but not break with his RFA's.

My biggest issue is, if Richards was bought out like he should have this summer, we could have signed Stepan to a similar deal that we signed McDonagh. Absorbed a couple of UFA years. And avoided countless stupid posts/threads linking Stepan to clubs like ****ing Calgary.

Then again, if Sather had a couple of extra mil to burn this summer, he might have invested a stupid amount on retaining a guy like Clowe, so it's not that fullproof.

Meh.

Sign the contract Steps. Play your ass off for two years. Then get your big-money. 48 games isn't 82. Replicate last season's production over the long haul.

Honestly keeping Richards probably gives them a better chance at the Cup this year...he makes the team better IMO right now and if it wasn't for the ridiculous contract rule in the CBA being applied retroactively, keeping him wouldn't be an issue.

Yeah, the NHL was just being jerks, 'punishing' teams that had spent $$$ according to the rules of the prior CBA, with both the retroactive 'cap recapture' penalty, and with this year's randomly low salary cap

Is Richards is the difference maker between a cup, and a playoff exit? I'll believe it when I see it. But I do absolutely agree that he does make us a better team. Without a doubt in my mind.

I'm just thinking long-term here.

I still don't understand how they were able to pull that off. Talk about a sham job and it completely ****s teams that signed legal contracts in the last CBA.

My concern with keeping Richards is what if he gets injured and can't be bought out this summer? The chances are small but, still. That could seriously hamper the team.

In the NHL's defense, the writing was on the wall. We all knew the cap would drop some. Some teams started preparing for the inevitable. Other teams, waited.

It's terrifying. If Richards can't be bought out this summer, we're ****ed. ****ed.

****ed.

Eeesh. Leave it to the Leafs to screw things up with an over payment. Rangers really lacked any foresight when they loaded up on depth players early in the summer and left themselves so tight to the cap. Depth is a good thing, but there's a fine line between depth and plain old redundancy.

He could be. Those kind of questions have so many variables I dont' think there's really an answer. I mean, Matteau was theoretically the difference maker between a cup and a playoff exit, and he was a 3rd line grinder.

Maybe Richards scores some big goals or makes some big plays in the playoffs, maybe he doesn't. What I think he does do is provide depth at the center position and that's never bad to have

This is pretty much how I feel but instead I think Richards could have lived on "only" a 6M cap hit, maybe the team did not need to pick up Powe, not sign Asham to two years, maybe traded them or Pyatt to make room. A series of small over payments and missteps to players that probably add little to the success of the team only now to be fighting to not overpay for someone who adds greatly to the success.
