Gotta believe sather is going to use that as leverage. I think he tries for $3.3-$3.7 range after seeing what Kadri got.

Its going to cost more than $3M to sign Stepan to a 2 year deal. Duchene at $3.5M is the top bridge contract and that guy was the 3rd pick overall.

Colorado did hold the line on Duchene, the third-overall selection of 2009, who signed a two-year deal worth $3.5 million per coming out of Entry Level.

That’s probably the number that would get it done for Stepan sooner rather than later; maybe $3.25 million per. It’s more than the Rangers want to pay, but doing so eliminates the possibility of an October surprise offer sheet that could have devastating consequences.

Henrik Lundqvist is on a contract that expires at the end of this season, and though the franchise goaltender’s representatives from Newport Sports have been in a steady dialogue with Rangers management, the parties are not close to an agreement for an extension, with both term and dollars at issue.

Still, The King has vowed not to allow these talks — which may be suspended at the end of camp if a significant gulf remains — to distract him from the mission at hand.

There are still 4 other major RFAs out there. ROR was a early season no-show last year (technically not a holdout). Subban too. This kind of stuff happens every year.

Yup. Sets the market. Based on that, Stepan should get a $3.5M per deal, at least.

I think it's a misperception. For one thing, we didn't have any issues getting Lundqvist locked up last time. RFAs are a much trickier negotiation, because you're dealing with a dispute between how a player sees himself, as a member of a group of his peers, and how an organization views a player, as an asset needing to be cost controlled. Crosby and Malkin were pending UFAs. That's a different negotiation, because in those cases, the market will generally bear what the player thinks he's worth (some notable exceptions this off-season, but this summer is an aberration).

What I think you might be seeing, though, is some teams who don't believe strongly in the bridge contract (Lombardi in LA, for example) and some teams who do (seemingly Bergevin in MTL and Nonis in TOR). Sather has always believed strongly in the bridge contract. Because our team has been generally so young over the last 4 years or so, we haven't had the opportunity to have many easy negotiations. If we wanted to re-sign Gaborik, we probably would've been able to do that pretty quickly. Everyone else, we've been willing to let go as UFA, has retired, or is young and subject to the more contentious RFA negotiation.

We don't have a hard time locking up our players. How much did Crosby get? How much did Malkin get? At $8.7M and $9.5M, anyone is going to be able to sign them.

NYR are signing tough contracts. Dubinsky, Del Zotto, McDonagh, Stepan and co. It's not exactly straight forward in all of these situations. The comparable, the bridge vs. long term, the post ELC considerations, the precedence, the increase in cap hit. The penguins didn't have to deal with this since both of their players were already being paid $8M+ or something around there.

If he wants to sit out, **** him. Honestly, everyone else took their bridge contracts and played hard to earn their big contract. They were all rewarded.

Go by the team rules, prove yourself over 82 games. Suck it up. There's a reason that ELC's and RFA's exist and it's not to be handing out massive contracts once they're up.

It's quite a bit easier to lock up the best player(s) in the world. You offer them more than anybody else for as long as you are allowed to sign them. Hard to see any comparison between that and a guy like Stepan.

this was more about being far apart as reported with Hank, not Stepan. Hank should be easy imo. he's the guy you pay 100 times out of 100.

I hate holdouts, especially when the Rangers are so tight to the cap. Could be recipe for disaster, could be rectified before they get on the ice on Thursday. They still really have one day left. Hopefully theyll get something done. Stepan needs to be in camp.
