Blue Jays Discussion: That's it: Jays win, but don't get help from TB/WSH & are eliminated from playoff contention

The Red Sox went 14-12 against the Mariners and Blue Jays, while the Mariners went 7-6 against the Red Sox and Blue Jays. Those are identical winning percentages, so the Red Sox win out by virtue of their 4-3 showing against Seattle and get to choose an A, B or C designation first. The Mariners choose next, and the Blue Jays get whatever is left over.”

This is the real fun A/B/C scenario (unlike the lame 2 WC one)

Game 1: B at A
Game 2: C at Winner A/B

Based on how this is going to work (TB1 Monday, TB2 Tuesday, WC Wednesday, ALDS Thursday), I have to think Boston takes C to get a day off for the Tuesday game...but then they risk having to fly to Seattle for one game and then right back to New York.

If that's the case, our flight path to the playoffs will look like Toronto -> Seattle -> Toronto -> New York -> Tampa Bay on consecutive days (featuring Steven Matz in the WC game).

It’d be fun.

I really dont care what the scenario is the Jays have to start taking care of their own business rather than worrying about everyone else.

We need to win 3 in a row.

Maybe just my thinking, but when we go out the way they did, you shouldn't be in the playoffs.
The1984 Tigers started the season 35-5 and played .500 for the remaining 142 games and still won enough to win the division, going .500 for most of the season and relying on their great start is a bad way to finish the season, did they deserve to make the playoffs? Of course they did.

This only works when you have a bullpen that you actually trust.

Even last night for all the complaining I saw on Twitter etc about Ray facing the Yankees a third time...much rather go down with him than trying to cobble together four innings out of this tired bullpen.

Yes, absolutely. We couldn't do it this year due to the pen. Hopefully we concentrate on the pen in the offseason.

Didn't they make it a priority last offseason too?

Not based on payroll allocation - we have one of the lowest % BP spend in the league (and that includes the IL guys).

It's not really fair for me to use the benefit of hindsight...but had we signed Liam Hendricks instead of Yates, we'd be comfortably in the first wildcard spot right now.

not just the pen, but the pitching staff in general.

many things have worked out well with the SP but the Berrios upgrade has been massive and it was clear that kind of upgrade was needed in the offseason.

I mean... spending an extra $13 million in any one area would probably make a pretty significant difference, wouldn't it?

$7.5m (remove Yates contract).

That won't even buy you a slightly used Roark ;)

I forgot about the weirdness of Hendriks's option and just looked at it as 3/54 rather than the 4/54 it really is. You win this round.

I stand by the overall point, though... unless they were adding payroll (and Rogers sucks, so I'm doubtful on that) then I don't know where that money was coming from.

Maybe, but the Yankees finish you off if you make it in

I guarantee that if the Jays make it to a play in game against the Yankees they will eliminate them.

The Yankees dont stand a chance in a one game scenario. That is my prediction.

I mean the Jays aren’t out of it yet even though winning last night would’ve been soooo much better. Red Sox lost 2 of 3 to Baltimore which certainly kept us in it. Now we gotta sweep Baltimore (doable considering they’re the worst team) but man it would’ve looked a lot better if that horrendous 6th inning never occurred

How does that saying go - penny wise, pound foolish I think? You try to save money on a big problem by patching it up and eventually you end up wasting more effort/time/money than you would if you just paid the price initially..

Liam Hendricks salary this year: $11m

Yates: $5.5, Chatwood $3m. Once those 2 busted, we had to bring in Hand and promptly dispose of him after he cost us I think 2 games. Cost us another $2m. Then we pivot to 37-year old Soria, costs us another $1.2 mil for the privilege of seeing his 8 innings here with a tidy ERA of 7.88...

Total expenditure for that poo-poo platter of trash: $12 mil, and probably 5 games lost in the standings.

I think that two out Semien error against the Tigers will be the biggest bad memory if the Jays miss by one game.

Fair enough... I just liked the strategy, at the time, of adding a handful of cheap-ish, high-risk/high-reward guys. They're already set up way better for next year then they were for this year (with Romano more proven, Mayza taking a step forward, and Cimber and Richards added), but I agree they need to add an arm or two.

To be honest, I don't even think they need to make a big splash in the pen. Another big high leverage arm would be awesome, but with the quality of the rest of the team they really just need a few reliable guys (Cimber and Richards types) who aren't going to ruin game after game.

Don't forget taking on Dickerson's salary to get Cimber.
