Yates, Phelps, and Merryweather died early on.

Phelps is nothing special though, and Yates and Merry were always major injury risks.

Maan...Seattle is ahead of us now. Unbelievable - our hitters and rotation are significantly superior to theirs, the pen is the only place where they edge us out. This f***ing division...

I'd argue Phelps was a good buy low alongside Yates and Chatwood but you can't always hit on those. Regardless, they were pieces and looking back the relief market was pretty thin to begin with. The Jays positioned themselves going in to have quite a few arms compete for spots. Good camps from Castro, Liriano, Payamps, Manoah, SWR, and Rees but they were all cut during ST. Pearson and Hatch had delayed starts due to ST injuries. I think the ability was there from a standpoint where if one falters, another can come up. 1st half numbers suggest the pen was middle of the pack. 2nd half they've taken a hit as they've only really been able to rely on Cimber/Mayza/Romano. I can't argue that having an elite arm like a Hendriks doesn't elevate this team into a more solidified position. But I'm also generally wary of high AAVs in the pen because of the volatility of the position.

Thankfully Boston lost but this team needs to hit when it matters. Pretty much need to run the table to finish ahead of the Sox imo.

Nah, the Jays hit great. The stats prove it. Didn't you know?

More like this "f***ing injury bug". Must have been like 7 wins left on the table because of all the injuries to the bullpen, and they certainly lost a bunch when the offense went quiet during August after Springer got injured.

Just think if we had a competent manager and got the wins back that he cost us

A full season of Richards and Cimber next year will help a lot. Less uncertainty heading into the year with those 2, Romano, and Mayza.

I'd add a couple more proven guys, if possible, to eliminate having to rely on the guys who seem to get injured every year.

It's a shame MLB didn't keep the expanded playoff format.

We still have a shot this season but it would make it far more interesting for fans across the league if there were more teams involved in the post season. The current format seems archaic in this day and age compared to the other professional sports leagues in North America.

The only thing that I think sucks is the wild card. It should at least be a best of three. I remember how dumb it was for the 2015 Pirates to have the second best record in baseball and not even play in the NLDS.

Is this not interesting?

If MLB had the NHL/NBA playoff system we would be trading this entire very fun month for a weekend of playoff games.

Remember in 1987 and the Bluejays had the 2nd best record in all of baseball and didn't make the playoffs.

1984 wasn't much different either. The team had the 2nd best record in the AL but their season was basically over by June because Detroit were having an all-time season. There was a huge disparity in quality between the AL East and AL West throughout the mid-late 1980s.

If they had wildcards back then the Bluejays would have made the playoffs 6 or 7 times in the 80s instead of only twice.

Keith Law made his picks for awards this season.

Vlad 2nd in AL MVP behind Ohtani. Semien 3rd.

Manoah didn't make it into his top 3 for AL ROY

And the kicker: He had Ray 3rd in the AL Cy Young behind Cole and Nathan Eovaldi.

Sounds like someone relying heavily on fWAR to come to that conclusion (re: CYA)
