Player Discussion Thatcher Demko

Demko is doing okay considering the circumstances, and I'm 99% sure Marky would be getting ventilated too under this "15 grade-A chances per game" defensive system we have.

But they have to fix the system fast lest the goaltenders lose confidence completely.
Yep....that's my fear. Demko is really starting his first full season as an everyday NHL goaltender. If this blitzkrieg continues, his confidence could be shot. If things don't get better, they may have to spot-start Demko and throw Holtby to the wolves. He figures to be around for only a season or two anyway.

you sayin ppl calling demko "GOAT" and people saying holtby isn't that good aren't the same thing.

and you know we can just click back to see if these 'posts' exist right?

I can assure you they exist and then some. I suggest you do just that.

And please don't put words in my mouth; nobody has said that Demko is "GOAT" but many have said that he is ready to be the #1 goalie based on basically nothing. Both goalies have played very well IMHO and also IMHO one has not noticeably outperformed the other. Holtby stopped about 4 breakaways in his last start, Demko didn't stop any that I recall. Collectively they have given up perhaps 4 crummy goals between them all year. Holtby was still making crisp passes to the red line even while getting totally abandoned by his teammates which to me shows his resilience and experience. Demko keeps getting better and better and is gaining experience day by day. We are set in goal IMHO. Even the deity Markstrom would be getting lit up with this sad sack team in front of him...

A good thread that showing Demko is having decent but is really struggling with fundamental or low-quality chances which he's been having trouble stopping. I think that bodes well for his future in that his problem is much more mechanical than it is actual ability. @mossey3535 can probably give a more detailed report.

Thanks for posting this. Woolly knows goalies, so it’s not all doom and gloom with Demko. But Demko cannot let in the McSofties anymore, regardless of his other stats. Softies kill team confidence, and cause guys to try to do too much (leave their position) to protect from bad angle shots.

Demko this year just screams 'average'. There's nights when he might steal you a game, and others where he might cost you game. He'll make some highlight reel saves that he has no business making; and then let in a couple of softies that shouldn't really go in. But that's the quintessential definition of 'average goaltending'.

The problem is that this team wasn't built (sic) to survive with 'average' goaltending. They need the Vezina Trophy goaltending that Markstrom was providing most nights last season just to survive. This is a team that consistently gets out-shot, out-chanced and bleeds high end scoring chances every night.

So goaltending isn't one of the Canucks problems....it's everything else.

Really intersting to read this Kinger, thanks for posting this, gives us more insite to our youngish goalie Demmer and the problems our team has with Holtby

I've been saying this for awhile now. Bad habits make him susceptible to low danger goals.

Nice save on Yamamoto, but then Demko looks for his post again and gets burned on the next lateral pass.

When Drai recovers the rebound he backs into the circle. No need to maintain a block position on him, then Demko is forced to make a huge push from his knees to try and save the cross-ice one-timer.

If you read my posts you may have noticed a trend. Contrast this to when he stopped McDavid straight on 1-on-1. Demko is really talented but he is absolutely pissing away goals on what should be low-danger scoring chances.

What kind of a cap hit are we looking for on his extension?

I think it might go to arbitration since the Canucks are not in a great position to negotiate, they already hitched their horses to Demko long-term when letting Marky go.

I think Demko's been everything we could have hoped for this season. Guys are whining about some soft goals he's given up when it's his first year as the #1 goalie and he has a dumpster fire of a defense in front of him; gimme a break. His numbers across the board are equal to Markstrom.

Demko has justified letting Marky walk, especially with the term he got. The problem has been Holtby playing like shit and being another sunken cost.

Huge fan of Demko, always have been. Good to see that his advanced metrics are strong as well. He's our guy going forward.

I think he's good but not great so far and in the grand tradition of the Vancouver Canucks he is now currently getting all the best starts and is, in effect, being coddled. This should continue until one or the other goalie gets hurt. If it's Demko I think Holtby will be decent (but only as good as his d coverage as always) but if Holtby goes down I fear that Demko will be found wanting.

How so? With the schedule as it is, they're basically playing the same teams. So far the only difference between them is Demko has played 2 more against Edmonton and Calgary, 1 more against Winnipeg and Ottawa and 1 fewer against Montreal.

You are ignoring game situations. For example Holtby's last start was the second of back to backs whereas Demko's was against a team that had played the night before in a different city. Big difference in both team's performances in front of their goalies...

Those are one example for each. I doubt there's enough of a pattern to make a significant difference. Especially when it's the goalie play rather rather chances against that seems to dramatically change in their starts.

While far from perfect, stats that take into consideration the quality of the chances against should factor a lot of the "how the team plays in front" variance.

Those stats show Demko playing much better.

Demko should have clear reigns in the number one spot now. Take advantage of a great situation for him.

should have done that this season and go with a 1 million dollar backup. Traditional way. 1 starter, 1 backup. We could have also saved on 3.7 million dollar cap room now Green is playing Demko as a starter, and Holtby is now a backup. a 3.7 million back up.
